I just found this video while listening to Jirel of Joiry, the song by Mercedes Lackey and Leslie Fish- it's one I like to do at Ren Faire😍 If you haven't heard it, go listen😍
Hi Michael. Love your channel. You remind me of British madcap DJ Kenny Everett
A favourite ... always surprised no one has come out with a Jirel comic book. A superb collection of stories
It would make a great comic!
Her castle "just happens to be" above a pit leading to another dimension that's like Hell? I wonder if that little detail was buried in fine print when she signed. Fun video, thanks for posting. 😀
Thanks for watching! My house had some problems but no gateways to Hell so far.
Quite impressive
The thirties were the Golden Age of Weird! It was not an easy period at all, but sometimes I wish I could live these days! Great vid, as usual!
Here in Florida, we don’t have to worry about interdimensional portals underneath our houses. Just sink holes.
I think I’d rather have the gateway to Hell!
I read Black God's Kiss for Sword and Sorcery week. It was a great story, and I like Jirel as a character.
That’s great! I’m glad you read it!
This looks great and I have a daughter who would love it. But it's proving very hard to track down! Found Black God's Kiss in a female fantasy author anthology but would love to locate the full collection.
I had to get my copy on EBay, if I’m remembering right.
Love your videos, sir! I wasn't a fan of "Jirel of Joiry." I couldn't get into her writing. I wasn't big on the whole 'other dimension' thing. However, I really appreciate that she was a strong voice in the fantasy genre as far as strong female characters. :)
Thanks for watching!
Probably pronounced 'jhwah-ree' (as in Leslie Fish's performance of Mercedes Lackey's filk)-it is implied that Jirel's world is sort-of our own (references to Roman armor), and the foe in Black God's Kiss is 'Guillaume', so a French pronunciation is likely.
This sounds pretty awesome. Another one to add to the list.
Thanks for doing these. I try to catch you SD, Crim, when i can.... I always enjoy em.
Thanks! I’m glad I’m doing something right.
I like your definition of classic :)
Bought this today from a bargain bookshop!
Fantastic!
Oh this sounds fantastic!
It’s really good.
I have this copy but I doesn't have the dust jacket, I guess I'll have to get another copy at some point. Anyway, I think it's cool we read this about the same time, and it's nice to see you getting the word out on it.
It’s funny it took me so long to finally read this book. I must have first heard about these stories 30 years ago! I really enjoyed it.
My personal definition of a "classic" has always been if it was published before I was born. So not strange as all.
That is a great definition.
To me, 'classics' are works of art-literature, music, fine arts-that, after many years, are still enjoyed by many people for their own sake, not out of merely antiquarian interest or curiosity. One might observe that this 'classic' status is changeable: J.R.R. Tolkien revolutionized the study of Beowulf, which was indeed only studied for historical and philological interest, in his lectures on 'Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics', showing that the work stands on its own as poetry and legend even for a modern reader.
One can hope that Moore's stories-almost 1960s drug-trippy-will find new readers in time. "Intellectual Property" is broken nowadays, and it is ridiculous that it takes a hundred years for works to enter the pubic domain.
JofJ sounds ever so slightly like Buffy the vampire slayer to me. Girl leads from the front. Is a badass and lives on a hell mouth.
I guess there are some slight similarities!
Have you read the Game of Thrones series by George R. R. Martin? If you have, I would be interested in hearing your take on the books.
I read the first two books years ago and really liked them. Then I thought I would wait until the series was finished and read them all in a row. That idea….hasn’t worked out 😐
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 Yep, I see your point. The last book came out in 2011 and so it has been 11 years with people waiting for the next book of the series. Hmmm.....🤔
Hmmm sounds interesting. Will you be bringing out a book anytime soon ? 😉
Probably not.
