Dno how I came across this, been bowling 20+ years , but this is Genuinly really good for new people, great video , keep them up! What club do you bowl at?
Good morning Thanks for comment - much appreciated I play at a small local club in Suffolk I cannot give you any more detail until the club gives me permission after their AGM Love to have you on board Kind regards Richard
In my 50+ years of bowling I have always found, when playing firing shots, that it helps to 'cant' the bowl in the hand to induce a wobble which negates the bias effect considerably. I have always played with bowls with a strong bias!
Hello MrGeeyess Thank you that’s a great comment Yes I work with narrower bias so no need to “cant” the bowl Perhaps older bowlers could do this when they lose power and the bowl swings more Kind regards Richard
Many thanks Richard. I will start practicing both. I'm playing lead and doing well but I think I need to try this...just in case. Though I think leading is more fun...very stressful being the skip I think.
Hi Judith Thank you for your comment I understand what you say. Only once have I fired as a lead in big games - and then that was in a triples I haven’t yet covered the other types of shot eg the trail and the take out but you would need to practice these as well In singles play you can get away with just drawing and firing Keep practicing Kind regards Richard
Thank you for your question It is a small local club in Suffolk I do not have permission to say any more yet Thanks very much for your interest Kind regards Richard
Hello Richard The toe crusher shot haha. A very much under practiced shot at my club several players frown on playing the drive specially the older players. Myself I tend to play too narrow often and cut across the head. Will try the 1 foot/2 foot idea at our next roll up. Great set of coaching type video keep um coming cheers Nige 👍👍
Hi Nigel Thanks for your supportive comments I appreciate your support I am trying to get as many videos in before the world bowls finishes on Sunday! Kind regards Richard
Great videos good sir 👍🏼 My thinking in some situations is simple .. “When in doubt give it a clout” Especially when you have a wall in front of the head 😅
Hello David Thank you for your comment Yes there are times to use weighted woods I lost a singles final once by firing rather than use a weighted wood - also in social bowling it is far more acceptable Yes some weighted bowls are better depending on the shape of the head and position of the back bowls etc . It is easier to get the correct line with a firing shot but if you are good at weighted shots then they would be better in some circumstances Hope this helps Kind regards Richard
Hi Geoff Yes I understand your point It is trial and error to find the line I mentioned length of jack and speed of bowl in my video. That was oversimplifying it because bias of bowl is a third factor Happy firing Kind regards Richard
Another very helpful tutorial. I notice you didn’t mention when one should fire on the forehand or backhand or if one is easier to do than the other, obviously the state of the head will dictate this.
Hi Graham Great to hear from Australia If you are driving flat out - there will only be a foot or so of green do it normally makes no difference forehand or backhand. If your target group of bowls is slightly angled, choose the wider angle into the group. Sometimes there is a slightly larger gap through short bowls on one hand. Happy driving Kind regards Richard
Thank you very much Tang I mentioned in the video about coming down to 3/4 speed. That will restrict you a bit but can be used to break up heads etc. With the 3/4 speed, you should have more control so the extra accuracy ca make up for the lack of speed Kind regards Richard
Hello Mark Thank you for your comment I have a great admiration for you wheelchair bowlers. I cannot of course replicate what it is like for you other than to put myself in a chair In theory you have a big disadvantage of not being able to use your whole body. This is offset by be completely steady when delivering I guess you have to retrain your body to bowl with arm only. Well done Kind regards Richard
@@RichardHorner-i2s-l4h Richard the best compliment I have had as a wheelchair bowler was in a internal league. I was playing lead and having a great battle with my opposing lead. I jokey said to him go easy on me I am disabled and he replied you are not to me

Thanks, Richard....what do you think about the benefits of a weighted or heavily weighted wood v firing?
David
Hello David

I lost a singles final once by firing rather than use a weighted wood - also in social bowling it is far more acceptable

Speed required is in relation to the bias of the bowl. The wider the draw line, the faster you need to bowl.

You are right
The answer is your favourite hand
There may be a marginal difference if the target is skewed

Hi, just a quick question, what defines when to Fire (Drive here in Australia) forehand or backhand?
Hi Graham

@ Thanks Richard, will keep your advice in mind.
Thanks Richard. It needs fire in some situations. But if the bowler physically not strong enough to fire, anything can help to improve the accuracy?
Thank you very much Tang
I mentioned in the video about coming down to 3/4 speed.
That will restrict you a bit but can be used to break up heads etc. With the 3/4 speed, you should have more control so the extra accuracy ca make up for the lack of speed

I am a wheelchair bowler and I can't fire as heavy as able body bowlers, but I am fairly accurate with my firing shots
