Each to their own. I play only outdoors because I enjoy the challenges you describe. However, the outdoor game is spoilt by players using indoor woods outside which reduces the sport to a game of skittles. Some years ago there was a proposal to enforce a minimum bias for outdoor bowls and all bowls would need to be tested to ensure compliance. It was discovered that such testing would take about 350 years there being only 2 testing centres in the UK (only one now). the proposal was naturally abandoned. Sadly the use of straight woods detracts significantly from the pleasure of having a carefully crafted shot removed by a rifle shot that requires a very different skill.

I, too, gave up playing about 5 years ago because of arthritic pain in the fingers. I was unable to guarantee that the bowl wouldn't end up 2 rinks away. However, my love for the game didn't stop me from spectating. I attended the County Finals three years ago and in talking to one of the finalists he told me that he had been in a similar situation but had discovered a 'magic' gel called "flexiSEQ" that had helped him to start playing again. I tried this gel and after 3 weeks being unable to lift a cup of tea I found that I was able to actually lift a bowl from the floor with one hand. FlexiSEQ has been a transformative. I re-started playing two years ago with size 0 medium and last season came 9th out of 76 in one club league and was 6th best in the results for success/games played. I am now able to enjoy the game once more. Just a point in the video. The stance astride the mat is not legal. OK as long as one foot is on (or over) the mat. Keep up the good work.`

I like both indoor and outdoor. I don’t necessarily agree that outdoor bowling is all straight lines, it really depends on the condition of the green, the height of the grass, the time of the season, damp vs dry conditions and if one lives in the north or south of the Uk but then I’m sure you already know this.

Good morning Colin I don’t know much about crown green except that I watched a lot on tv many years ago The crown green is a domed green and players can cross cross over the green in any direction The jack is also biased and is delivered from a small circular mat from where the previous jack finished If you set the bias against the slope, the bowl will go daily straight and vice versa I believe socially it is different and the game is played mainly in the north of England I will be covering this - probably when we go outdoors in April Thanks for your comment So you don’t miss any video, you might want to subscribe Kind regards Richard

    • @RichardHorner-i2s-l4h
      @RichardHorner-i2s-l4h 2 дня назад

Good morning Anything-and-everything Thank you for your very interesting comment Ultimately, the best bowl is the one that you feel most comfortable with. If you feel that the Ace bowls give you better control and confidence in your regular games, and you use the Lazers for situations where they’re more effective (such as quicker surfaces or leading) then that’s a good choice for you. I agree that there is no point having a wide swinging bowl indoors The key is ensuring you’re confident in switching between them and that the two sets complement your playing style, not cause confusion or inconsistency. I will be presenting a video on this in the next few weeks so keep a look out (eg by subscribing) Kind regards Richard

@@RichardHorner-i2s-l4h as afore mentioned, practice with this type of shot is really important, so much of practice is focused on the draw shot to the jack, it's almost the go to. blocking has to be studied in different scenarios of practice with all members of a playing team attendant, I advocate competitive practice sessions..as a team you have to be of one mind in this..another aspect of match play is communication..there is so much distraction/noise down a rink/green...sign language, distinct verbal/ visual communication is key to success... discipline...a group mentality has to be nurtured. If you have a team of individuals intent on making their own mark you are destined to failure. My humble opinion.

  • @MrRadiorobot

Did you have a bbq going during the presentation? Rather smokey!!....fyi...blocking shots are underrated, as with everything else, practice makes perfect. A blocking shot doesn't have to be exactly on the opponents delivery line, it just has to be near enough to be an enormous distraction, remember, a huge part of this game is psychology. Xxx

....myself and wonderful brother in law played 7 out of 7 local cup games using a blocking strategy to defeat all opponents..this came about because we identified the predominant use of narrow bias bowls used by skips..they use them as artillery.. in my honest opinion the blocking game to defeat the narrow bias bowls is imperative to the modern game. I hope this helps x

In my 50+ years of bowling I have always found, when playing firing shots, that it helps to 'cant' the bowl in the hand to induce a wobble which negates the bias effect considerably. I have always played with bowls with a strong bias!

    • @RichardHorner-i2s-l4h

Hi Graham Great to hear from Australia If you are driving flat out - there will only be a foot or so of green do it normally makes no difference forehand or backhand. If your target group of bowls is slightly angled, choose the wider angle into the group. Sometimes there is a slightly larger gap through short bowls on one hand. Happy driving Kind regards Richard

Hello David Thank you for your comment Yes there are times to use weighted woods I lost a singles final once by firing rather than use a weighted wood - also in social bowling it is far more acceptable Yes some weighted bowls are better depending on the shape of the head and position of the back bowls etc . It is easier to get the correct line with a firing shot but if you are good at weighted shots then they would be better in some circumstances Hope this helps Kind regards Richard

Hi Richard great subject again I’m finding the videos very interesting. I bowl static indoors with the shooter stance with my front leg forward to lower closer to the rink. Weight control is my issue as there is no body forward movement as with an upright stance. Any thoughts on this Cheers Nige 👍👍

Hello again Nigel Yes I understand I have never played the static - I always say if you can use total body movement it is better For you, maybe start with a semi static shooter and make a small movement forward Keep in touch Kind regards Richard

Another very helpful tutorial. I notice you didn’t mention when one should fire on the forehand or backhand or if one is easier to do than the other, obviously the state of the head will dictate this.

Thanks Richard. It needs fire in some situations. But if the bowler physically not strong enough to fire, anything can help to improve the accuracy?

Thank you very much Tang I mentioned in the video about coming down to 3/4 speed. That will restrict you a bit but can be used to break up heads etc. With the 3/4 speed, you should have more control so the extra accuracy ca make up for the lack of speed Kind regards Richard

Hello Richard The toe crusher shot haha. A very much under practiced shot at my club several players frown on playing the drive specially the older players. Myself I tend to play too narrow often and cut across the head. Will try the 1 foot/2 foot idea at our next roll up. Great set of coaching type video keep um coming cheers Nige 👍👍

Interesting. I didn't realise that the aim point on the bank doesn't change if the mat doesn't move up. I assume you just take the weight off and bingo, you are on the jack! Very helpful thank you. Just to clarify one thing said in the video and that was that your initial aiming point at the no.1 on the bank was too narrow and you had to widen it. Therefore that point would be the same even if you rolled a short jack because it was the right one for the long jack? Then if the mat was moved up you would bring your aiming point in eg to the stool on the bank.

Hello again munchkin Good to hear from you again Yes on the full length on rink 2 going backhand the correct line for my bowls is just outside the no 1 sign. I took the no 1 as a clear example initially / a bit lazy on my part Then I should use the slightly wide mark for all lengths from the mat on the T. As I move the mat up yes the line narrows so that on minimum it is on the bench Hope this helps and thank you for your comments Richard

@@RichardHorner-i2s-l4h Thank you Richard, that is invaluable advice as it clarifies things for me. Now I just have to put it into action! If you were bowling on the forehand side, would you change your aiming point or weight? I ask because I wonder if I bowl differently on one side to the other so have to change my aiming point to reflect this. In theory, I guess the angle and length is the same but I am right handed so this might explain why one side is different to the other.

I dislike bowls being "bumped" , but does it damage the green, and is there a rule against it? look at Julie Forrests delivery. Not the smoothest , I hear a "bump" almost every time, but she's very effective. I've been bowling for about 3 yrs now and loving it. Thanks for your input, advice, and getting bowls on social media :)

Hello James Thanks for your great comment A severe bump must damage the green over time At my previous club bowlers that bumped badly were banned. One was a friend of mine and he had to change to a fixed kneeling stance. I am going to release another video in the next day I hope dealing with older bowlers problems. One is the difficulty of getting low enough because of knee or hip problems I am going to say that if all else fails then bumping forward ( like Julie Forrest) is better than releasing too soon and bumping downward into the rink Hope this helps Once again thanks for your comment Richard

Love your video and the content, As a bowler for over 20 years, I still like learning new things. I think investing in a tripod might help with your video quality (not a critique, just some advice). Personally I'd love to see more videos on release and actually seeing you bowl - think that would maybe attract more viewers. Lastly you can get free software to help you edit your videos - might be worth looking in to as your channel is great!

Is there any benefit in changing the line to compensate for routinely being short and/or long. More field less field.

Good morning David I haven’t done that myself You can move up to front of mat or to the back of mat for fine adjustments It should be just a weight issue - I would concentrate on that Hope that helps Thanks for your comment Richard

I am new to bowls and therefore always lead and yes even if you get your bowls on the jack they will nearly always be knocked away and you teammates usually ignore you whilst discussing tactics, I prefer Aussie rules bowls which keeps you involved and playing all positions, just saying

Thank you for the helpful series of videos. One thing I would like instruction on is using the mat. Moving the position of the mat up and down the rink and altering your feet position to achieve a different path for your ball to the jack.
