  • Its shearing day! Charlie visits to shear the next group of ewes due to lamb in a couple weeks. Conference call, ortho appointment, beer pick-up, and a quiet tractor ride with a tired hubs rounded out the day.

    When you got tongue-tied in the beginning and stick your tongue in and out it reminded me of a Ewe giving birth. It give me a big smile. Sending love from Los Angeles 💛💜

    Never would have noticed the braces unless you said something. I love that the neighbor brought out a sub to Mark, and you brought out a beer! Yes, with our spouses, we can have ...one of those days, lol. They don’t last long luckily. I wish I lived close by your farm! You guys are so great together! ❤️❤️👍👍🐑🐑🚜🍺

    Discovered your vlogs a day or so ago, so I have gone back to the very beginning. My Dad was a shearer (Down Under) and as a child growing up I loved going to the shearing shed if he was doing extra on the weekends.
    Memories of being put into a wool bale press and shut in with the property owners daughter while the “shed” went for lunch in the late 50’s/60’s. Your wool bags are so different to Aussies we’re back then.
    Looking forward to catching up on more of your videos.

    Love wool❤️😏I’m a hand spinner, and it makes me so sad that a renewable resource as good as wool has been so devalued. It probably costs more to shear than the wool is worth. 3/5 pounds a sheep I would say so $2.50 a sheep if your lucky! No farmer would bother shearing if it wasn’t necessary for the sheep’s healthy. And if a shearer mistreated the sheep as shown in certain propaganda they would be fired on the spot.

      Hey Sue! I 100% agree! I keep wondering if there isn't something we could be doing... even at an industrial level to increase the use of this amazing resource... I'd love for our industry to put out research proposals to universities or industry for ideas 'outside the box' to increase usage, therefore demand. But you're right... we shear because we have to, not for profit...

    I’ve seen sheep that were lost in the bush (I’m Australian) for several years before being found. They have so much wool that if you could put your hand flat on their skin, the wool would be in your armpit. They can go blind, get brain damage from the excessive heat & arthritis from trying to carry around all that weight. I’ve seen one that could barely move & that’s how they found & caught him (check it out on Bondi Vet). The shearing is more necessary than a haircut, it’s more like being constipated, if it goes on too long you die in misery (I have some digestive issues 😒)

    Hi Sandi I love all your videos and how natural you make this look. I scoured your videos and I was wondering what kind of sheep do you breed? And where do you send your wool after Charlie shears it?

    Some people have way too much time on their hands. I then must assume that the people who have a problem with the shearing of sheep, also have a problem with the shaving of ANY hair on humans, male or female.

    Are you making a special effort to keep the wool hair as long as possible, or is it really just about time efficiency -- the technique being so careful to stay right near the skin all the time...?

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  7 лет назад +4

      Optimist Club of Puslinch that's a great question! I hadn't actually thought about that! I think it's just standard length. My shearing is really only done for health of ewe, not really for quality of wool. But definitely something I'd like to dig deeper into...
