Great video, and I share your love for the Victrix Middle Guard box! However, I believe you got the sprues included wrong, since it's 2 of Chasseurs and 2 of Grenadiers. Difference is minimal, only the bearskin-clad heads and some of the boots on the officers differ.
As someone else has said, the Middle Guard box is a mix of grenadiers and chasseurs, but the other thing is that the heads for the Middle Guard are all in covered shakos. The box art with the eagles isn't reflected in the sculpts! It is still the most versatile box of plastics in my opinion. As well as guard, they are perfect for voltigeurs and grenadiers for line regiments, as well as legere batallions and more!
Thanks for the shout out for Warbases since I was searching for all types of bases for my upcoming builds of various types of armies and genres . Seems this supplier covers almost everything I could need. Also does movement bases and trays. These videos are great for pointers on the first stage of collecting the figures for the foundation of an army and I have found them of great help. A quick video on Basing would help since I noticed there are big choices on the types and thickness of base available. I want to provide my troops with bases that allow for safe storage when not in use or on display which is more likely. Will be spending Xmas trawling through your videos in the hope organisations and reasons for the different types become clear to me. Especially the French!
It can be very confusing! That was definitely a barrier to me when I was getting into the period. Thankfully books are far more accessible now, instead of assuming you've already got a masters in napoleonic warfare. That's a topic I could rant about for hours! 😂 I'm planning an 'essential book' episode to be released this week (in time for xmas pressies!)
Best edit so far didn’t relize the bearskin was edited on great stuff😁😂 also amazing video want to start an army for middle guard late war (basically old guard by that point) thanks a lot cheers
@@NapoleonicWargaming yeah that's what I was considering but I also might wait for perry as I almost prefir slimmer sculpts for young and middle while the bulky for the old guard makes them seem just a bit more strong I guess
The difference between pre 1812 line grenadiers and old guard grenadiers uniform is the front plate of the bearskin, line grenadiers have a bomb and the old guard have an eagle on it. It´s a little detail but it is visible and for me is important. But I agree about the fact that grenadiers in full dress look better than in greatcoats so the best option is front rank.
That's a great bit of knowledge, thanks man! I want to say, the FR ones are absolutely lovely, It's a shame I cant show my Italians, I'll try and get a pic under not great light in t he week and put it on the fb page
I saw that Warlord makes Old Guard Grenadiers. They look nice, no great coat, and bayonets faced down as they would when advancing close to the enemy. They are expensive though I think they are something like $50 USD for 24 of them. Do you know if they are any decent and worth the price? Or is it better to get Victrix for the same price and get twice as more?
Personally I'm not a huge fan, they just look at bit...off to me. Cant quite put my finger on it. That said, I've not seen them in the flesh, so they could be a lot nicer than I'm giving them credit for! Their Imperial Guard band however, I absolutely love! 😂
I’m almost certain they’re that much because if you look on the bottom right and see the figure amount says only metal for ogg im assuming because they are infamous for most people nowadays
got a bunch of Three Armies stuff 1806 Prussians and French a couple of years ago before he sold out to Emperor Toad they were great and at a great price over here across the pond but now not so much
I always enjoy your videos but to me the Imperial guard is not complete without Princess dragoons, Mamelukes and the Chasseurs and Grenadiers a cheval. There were other unit types in the guard including engineers and medical corps for those who want some of everything.
You're absolutely right! The Gren a Cheval are one of my all time favourite unit! Unfortunately it's the constraints of the budget! I'd view collecting the IG as a separate army, so in rmthe long term, expect to spend as much on them as you would on a dull army of Eussia or GB
Long time watcher of the channel and love your content its been a great help understanding the period! I am biting the powder cartridge and gonna start collecting a French force! Was going to do a Line Division (1st div. 1st Corp at Waterloo) but having bought two boxes of Middle Guard before realizing the uniforms are a little different the Line and Guard now they are going to be one of Guard Divisions at Waterloo. Not sure weather to go for the Chasseurs or the Grenadiers though, would recommend one over the other ?
They're both identical in the rules, so it really depends on which you think is coolest! For my, I think the grenadiers are the more iconic, but it was the chasseurs that saw more action at Waterloo in the final assault (theres a lot of controversy over this though!) It's really up to you, they're both super cool! I mean, with 2 boxes of MG, you could do 2 battalions of both... ;)
@@NapoleonicWargaming - I'm so very sorry to hear that. Really been enjoying all your videos in this series. They're terrific to listen to whilst painting. But I do look up every time you mention a range or blister of minis. LOL!!
@Blaxkleric haha, thanks! Yeah I don't spend too much time on the visuals because that's exactly how I watch YT...by not watching it, but listening as I paint! Thanks for the commiserations. I need to re do them really, but it's never a chore to paint guard!
I actually mixed the Victrix old guard with Victrix French infantry 1804-1807, since during the 100 days campaign French luck of equipment also cut up with old guard... not enough bearskin heads... so technically you could use old grenadiers bearskin heads or even bicorn heads... you can see pictures of my first battalion on my Instagram...
Have u seen elite minatures have alot of young guard I haven't brought any yet but am interested as they are £30 ish for 36 metals. Didnt no about victrix middle guard handy
Yeah, turns out its 2 species of the grenadier, 2 chasseur, not 4 chasseur. Even better imo! Elite definitely have their own style, many people really like it, not it's not my cup of tea. But if you do, that's fantastic value for money, good call!
Are there really sculpted eagle shako plates on the Victrix Middle Guard? I would really like to get those if it is not just painted on covered shakos.
Thanks alot! To bad that no manufacturer have filled the gap of making heads with guard shakos. It is the same with the Russians. Keep up the good work!
