It was wise that Kirk had to put in his report that Commodore Matthew Decker had sacrificed himself and the U.S.S. Constellation to make a machine that destroys planets permanently inoperative, rather than he committed suicide because he lost his crew when they were on a planet that later got destroyed by that huge machine after abandoning ship while Decker stayed behind, believing the captain goes down with his ship.
A great example of Kirk knowing exactly how to talk to Spock.
