Hi, my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent comes from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work, but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I would only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people consider this the lowest time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly, what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving, and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I have been living full-time in my self convert van.

Emi as of Friday July 12 my husband and I are now doing van life. We have to leave our apartment because the rent went up to three thousand a month and we couldn't afford it. So we are starting our new adventure in van life. Even at the age of 60. Take care Emi and give Miss Kelly a hug for me.

The entire Crows Nest Pass area was always one of my favorite places to be a "tourist"! From the unbelievably ginormous Frank Slide to all the small town museums, from a tour down into an old coal mine to the old cemeteries for coal miners who died in some of Canada's largest mine disasters, there is just so much history and so many things to see and do. I haven't had a chance to go to that area for some years now, but I spent many summer vacations camping in the forests all around it with my kids when they were growing up, so thanks for a reminder of all the memories!!

In B.C. you don’t need a permit or pass for wild camping as it is totally legal. Dispersed or wild camping is allowed on public land/crown land, which makes up approximately 94% of the province. You can find solitude pretty much anywhere ; no need to camp on top of eachother in designated areas like in AB. Campers can stay at a site for up to 14 days before having to move at least 100 meters away. The only exception is when there are „no parking“ signs posted.

Hi Emi, glad to see you and Mz. Kelly enjoying your summer rambles. The area that you are in, being "government" land is also probably land local ranchers lease during the good grazing months to fatten their cattle on. Sometimes a couple of ranch hands or even family members of the rancher will pull trailers and campers into one of the local camping spots and enjoy camping, but also be around to semi-monitor their cows. You end up with campers, ranchers, cows, and travelers all kind of sharing the area... I spent a few years living around Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, and we used to camp in the back country out past Jackfish Lake and there were always cattle, wild horses, and even sometimes herds of sheep grazing on leased land, and we'd usually run into the occasional group of campers from 2 or 3 different ranches. The cattle "free graze", water is usually a creek or a river, or a lake, and west of Jackfish, I've even seen cows using sloughs and run offs created by beavers and their dams (if not the beaver ponds themselves. Sometimes the beaver ponds flood over the road and make it hard to get through if you don't have a 4x4 or a quad. Anyway, enjoy your trip, stay safe, and peace out, from Doc, in the Great White (now summery green and lush) North of southern Ontario, Canada... and give Mz. Kelly some pets from me.
