Hanwei Great Wave Katana

  • This a fantastic example of the classic katana design. Hanwei created all the classic looks well done at a decent price. For a mid-level katana with a T-10 blade this sword handled almost effortlessly and cut beautifully. This is a solid bodied blade (no bohi) and yet was very well balanced. The saya was a bit lose and rattled a bit ... but at this price point I could hardly complain. The only part of this katana that I had an issue with is one I seemingly have an issue with when it comes to most Hanwei katanas ... the tsuka. I found it very flat and angular feeling in my hand. And while I know this is a good training tool to learn edge alignment ... as a matter of person taste I'm not a big fan. This is largely negated by the fact that the blade is so well done.
I've included time stamps in case there are sections you would like to revisit or simply skip over ... enjoy!

I have no idea of your training experience but I cannot help but to notice that it seems you are not using your center when cutting, you seem to be relying upon your arms doing all the work. Just my observation as an Aikidoka. Thanks for the review.

Don't see too much about that model. Good review. Looks like it has a bit deeper sori than the average.. Those tsuka are definitely a deal breaker though. Nice static on that juice bottle. And got an empty! Thats not easy. Took me a year of daily cutting to be able to pull that off. Dont sell yourself short dude. I definitely noticed a marked improvement in your cutting.

Thank you for the comments about the cutting. I have been practicing. I've been incorporating the empty bottles as test for just how sharp these things CAN come to you right out of the box. This is a very good example. Having this nice model though helped alot. I agree about the tsuka ... one of the reasons I ended up letting it go months ago. But despite my own personal preferences which are often counter to Hanwei designs ... whoever bought that from me got a damn nice sword.

@@mr.excalibur1455 welcome. For sure. They have a couple higher end models im considering, then just send the tsuka to be reshaped and wrapped.

Nice all around great Hanwei product that is a testimony of the quality of these swords, wish I saw closer detail angles...nice extended Sori on the blade, nice flat polish, cuts well, should be a good Tatami matt cutter with a little effort..good stuff

This sword was a nice OVERALL piece ... especially for the $500-$600ish price tag. Like I said here ... it was a very nice classic take on a simple but elegant and VERY functional design by Hanwei. These guys often get the bad rap for being the king of all mass producers of the Chinese - made Japanese styled katanas. But when you start looking at their wide range of products ... its really no great wonder why they are kinda seen as the granddaddy of 'em all.

I don't have a whole lot to add to the conversation here. I love the videos.
Haven't had the privilege to use one of these just yet.
I own 4 Hanwei swords and half of those are European blades.

I appreciate the comments. Thanks for the compliments. If this sword fits in your price range (depending on the distributor high $400s to $600ish) I would definitely recommend it. And ... this is coming from a guy who out of six, seven, eight ... something around there ... different Hanwei katanas I've tried ... I've kept ONE! Believe it or not it actually wasn't this one.

Thanks to you Arthur i decided to buy one, unfortunately the price was a bit higher than the one you describe but i dont regret it. What i found interesting was the shape of the tsuka I'm used to hourglass shape that i find attractive.

Yeah ... the prices of everything have gone up and these videos are going a few years old. This was nice sword. Yes ... the handle is a typical Hanwei handle ... but I still found it ok ... especially with a standard sized katana like this one. Enjoy!!

This katana is seldom reviewed. Kudos for taking up the challenge. For me personally I had to do a bunch of mods to make it to my liking. The foundation of this sword can not be denied. Mr. Excalibur correctly stated this sword is above the average and even beyond. Thank you for reviewing the sword and keep up the good work!

Thank you very much for the kind words. This one was fun ... I have to admit. Had the Hanwei rattle in the saya ... and that flat Hanwei handle ... but even with those ticks ... nicely put together sword righ outa the box. Nice cutter!

Easy to go on someone else's video and be an arm chair samurai. Think Excalibur did pretty well here. If you can leave a comment putting down someone else's form surely you could post a video of your skill, since you seem to fancy yourself an authority on the subject

As far as Hanwei goes ... this was very simple and nice. The Tori Elites, from what I can tell, are higher priced ... and I've never owned one so I can really make a comparison. All I can say is that this was one had nice castings, the typical Hanwei rattle in the saya ... but it fits ... tight eto ... and a very nice cutting blade.
