    It's an understatement to say this is GREAT in so many ways, but I must comment on that Rhodes sound... one of the most beautiful, lush, thick, meaty, biting recordings I've heard in a long time...reminiscent of the Yellowjacket's Russ Ferrante's Rhodes sound from the early 80's. LOVE IT!

    • @Resolution88
      @Resolution88  8 лет назад

      H there, thanks very much - I'm really glad you like Rhodes sound; I deliberately went after Herbie's mid'70's sound (Secrets / Sunlight) etc because that's the sound I love most. It's not all just the Rhodes (choice of era instrument) and voicing it, there are other factors such as playing style, choice of chord voicings - but the instrument and the voicing are definitely the primary, most influential things!

    My god. MY MIND HAS BEEN ALTERED BY THIS. My whole musical life has been based around Thrust (and the original Chick & Return to Forever) and the Rhodes. I have sitting next to me right now a 1976 Rhodes Suitcase 73, same as yours, just fewer keys...and I'm glad to see somebody else that gets how a damn Rhodes is supposed to sound! Like THAT. Like a Suitcase, like the Peterson preamp. Huge and rich and not all tinkly. Like Herbie's Rhodes from those albums, like Toby Smith's Rhodes from early Jamiroquai (which was also a mid-70s Suitcase). Mine sounds like that too, and it's just so gratifying that someone else gets it. GOOD GOD, AND THE WRITING HERE IS JUST PHENOMENAL, not to mention the PLAYING. I mean, and even a little Chameleon reference in there. Masterful! This is the music I always wish was still being made...and it is! Thanks to you. I am eternally grateful I stumbled on this just now. I must seek you out and see you and buy all your shit. Make albums and I'll give you my cash.

      +floofytown Hey floofytown. Join the club. I have 1976 Rhodes Suitcase 73 as well (week 26). I love the sound of this piano and the sound Tom gets out of his. I'm a big fan of Jamiroquai (the Toby period....), Herbie and Resolution 88. Our Rhodes can make that signature smooth sound with a bite if you'd like to :)

    • @Resolution88
      @Resolution88  8 лет назад

      +Rhody Juzz +floofytown hey! Maybe we should start an official 1976 suitcase Rhodes club! So glad to meet other people that know how these instruments *should* sound ;)

    • @rhodesjuzz9508
      @rhodesjuzz9508 8 лет назад

      +Resolution 88 Thanks Tom. Don't know if you can remember but we have had some email contact about our piano's (Reinier...). This song is really really amazing and I'm really jalous at your 88 keys and above all your capabilities on the (Rhodes) piano. The past few weeks I have been working on my piano, with voicing, tuning, replacing some grommets, replacing 1 new tine, glueing hammertips but now it's back in business :)
      If you'd like, we can open a channel 1976 suitcase Rhodes club on youtube and see if there are more people who like this sound !! Most people on the internet prefer the barking sound of 73/74. Personally I don't really like the bell like sound of 78 or MK2 piano's......

    • @Resolution88
      @Resolution88  8 лет назад +1

      +Rhodes Juzz Hi Reinier - thanks for getting in touch again; yes I remember! I'm glad you like this song, it's one of my favourites that I've written. I'm glad you've been working on your Rhodes. By all means set up a 1976 suitcase Rhodes club and I'll happily join! I agree - I'm not into the really barky early sound or the bell-like later sounds. I don't like any mechanical noise - I record direct from the amp outputs. My favourite Rhodes sound has to be Herbie's around the Secrets / Sunlight era… :)

    Hello tom. I am trying to tune a suitcase rhode sounds with a same tremolo as you used in this song but it is not easy. Tell me if you remember how depth and speed parameters are. I will use it on my keyscape prefered personal patch.

    • @Resolution88
      @Resolution88  6 лет назад

      Hi Dimitri - when Herbie recorded, they took the sound direct from the Rhodes amp *and* they mic'd the cabinet to mix in the signal with tremolo. The tremolo speed had to be matched by ear in those days. On gigs, I listen to the sound and match the tremolo speed using the preamp control - on this track, because it was a studio recording, we used the panning control in Logic and it would have probably been on quarter notes with a cats eye modulation pattern.

    • @dimitrigol
