Slight correction, Paul didn’t actually drink in the beginning, there’s a scene during the first tour when he’s offered a flask from David and he turns it down to drink milk. He only started drinking when his sickle cell anemia started getting out of control + frustration with the group’s direction. That’s why Otis says the drinking came out of nowhere.
I was about to make this comment, but I prayed there was a like-minded individual that remembered that part in the tour when Paul was drinking. I just want to thank you for being that like-minded person😊😊 (Edit) Still an amazing review as ALWAYS of one of my faves from @forthenostagia
Throughout the 90s every time I turn around, I would always see Jenifer Lewis playing either somebody’s mother or matriarch in either film or television
one thing I didn’t like about the movie was the false narrative surrounding Paul’s drinking. He was suffering from sickle cell anemia and was experiencing pain so he turned to drinking which turned into an addiction. His drinking didn’t start out of pleasure but more so due to his health issues.
Not that drinking was a good out but I had/have 3 family members with the disease and my goodness... The pain I witnessed with them will make one wish for death. I have the trait and when younger still experienced horrible pain off and on. 😐
@@DDarkestKnightthey also failed to mention that they were going to bring David back into fold along with Dennis but of course his antics ruined it, also he was well aware that Dennis was replacing him in the group. When David, Eddie, and Dennis decided to create their own version they didn’t do that until the late 80’s and early 90’s long after their reunion tour.
Also he was depressed to not be as important in the group as he was in the beginning. Like before David Paul really was the main man who everyone looked up too and as David grew to fame Paul was pushed back a bit
Fun factttt! Otis actually asked Leon to play him but he asked to play David & producers were hoping he would want to play him😂 he was destined for that role!
The fact that Malik Whitfield has not aged since this movie is crazy. He still looks so good! He also ripped my heart out when he said “oh Blue” when he found him. I will forever love this movie and will always watch it if it’s on.

I hate how this movie made it seem like Paul was a drunk. He suffered from sickle cell and would drink to cope with the pain. Also, many believe Paul was murdered and didn't commit suicide. They really did him dirty in this and I was so upset when I learned his true story.
The whole paul was murdered is just a theory in my opinion. That man clearly was depressed. Otis said in his book that Paul actually told him about wanting to end it a few months prior to his death However I do agree that the movie failed to show that Paul wasn't just a alcoholic for no reason it was almost like painkillers for him . He took it against the disease. Also he actually never drank alcohol in the early days . Only water or Milk

There are so many important details that this movie glossed over. 1.) Al did not sing lead on "Come On" that was actually Richard Street 2.) The Primes and Primettes never performed live together, they did however rehearse together. 3.) Otis Williams was more than happy to have Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams in the group, he was not opposed to them joining as the movie depicted. 4. Al and Paul did have an altercation but the movie was wrong about how it happened. In spite of how restless and temperamental he was (due to his alcoholism as well as the lack of success early on), Al loved performing on stage. They were performing at Chappy's Lounge in mid 1963, they had done all the songs in their repertoire but Al wanted to do more. Paul and the others were too tired, and Paul said they weren't going back on so Al crashed a bottle onto Paul's face. Paul spent the night in the hospital and was stitched up, however he told the others to keep Al in the group. However Al's behavior didn't improve and he was fired after the Motown Christmas Party later that year for some snarky comments. Al told Otis that they were pretty boys and that they shouldn't have to dance but rather "look good for the bitches". 4.) David's behavior didn't really become an issue until 1967 not 1966 as the movie showed 5.) David was fired in 1968 for missing a performance with the group in Cleveland to attend a concert where his girlfriend Barbara Gail Martin was performing. 6. David would repeatedly turn up at the group's gigs. He would jump on stage whenever the group would perform songs he sang lead on, and Dennis would hand him the mic. 7.) Paul wasn't always onstage drunk as the movie depicted and they never showed why he took up drinking either. Paul was the group's original lead singer and choreographer however he was overshadowed by Eddie and David in the former department. He was also replaced as choreographer, because Cholly Atkins was in charge of that. This made him very depressed and couple that with his sickle cell anemia. He was in constant pain, he had to fly at high altitudes when the group went to other states or countries, and he was always winded during performances. He coped with pain through alcohol. 8.) Eddie was uncomfortable with the group's musical direction from 1968-71. They had abandoned love songs such as "My Girl" for an edgier brand of soul i.e. "Cloud Nine", "Runaway Child". He was also adamant at several points about bringing David back, which were repeatedly shot down by Otis. Surprisingly, it was Eddie who was initially hesitant about bringing David into the group because the former was a solo act at first. He also didn't want to be onstage without Paul and believed that Otis and Melvin were trying to oust Paul from the group when his health issues compounded. 9.) Paul was not found dead in a parking lot but rather an alley. 10. Dennis was not angry that Norman Whitfield had the 3rd of September line in "Papa Was A Rolling Stone". Edward's father died on October 3rd. The group as a whole was upset because the instrumentation was getting more emphasis than their singing. The track is 12 minutes long. Dennis was angry during the recording because Norman had him record the song dozens of times, and he was reported to have sung the song through clenched teeth. 11. Eddie and David didn't start performing together until 1985.
And another thing I will add Paul actually had a solo career after being kicked out of the group. He recored some songs . Eddie helped him write a couple of them and he was still advising the group from times to.times with the choreography even though he still wasn't well enough to go back with them properly

This biopic is the reason I'm an old soul today and became a HUGE Temptations/Motown fan. The Temptations are the greatest group ever and their journey is so inspiring. The only issues I have with the movie is the facts that they got wrong and the things that were left out. One being Paul's drinking addiction. Paul was struggling with sickle cell and depression. Once the fame got bigger and they started touring more often it got stressful for him and he turned to the bottle. His drinking didn’t get worse until his sickle cell disease started to bother him as he aged closer to his 30s. He used alcohol to cope with the pain but he was never once drunk onstage when performing. He was always professional no matter what. If you ever watch his later performances with the Temptations, whenever he was looking off or stumbling around at times it was because of his sickle cell and was in very much pain. He used pain pills to ease it, which is why in some footages his skin was getting lighter and bloated.

David snatching the mike from Dennis will never not be funny to me. It will forever be one of my favorite scenes in a movie. I watch it over and over and laugh every time 😂😂 Ain't To Proud to Beg is one of my favorite songs.
Temptations is not my favorite movie but it DOES have my #1 favorite movie SCENE of all-time. And it's that ENTIRE part where David sneaks onto the stage and takes the microphone from Dennis in order to perform "Ain't Too Proud To Beg". Everything about the scene is great to me, the slow walk to David approaching stage plotting his whole plan 😂. During the performance how Blue and Otis were pissed at David but they had to hold their tongue to keep the performance going The run-off David did off the stage, the confrontation afterwards "WITHOUT DAVID RUFFIN, Y'ALL AIN'T NOTHIN' 🗣" and then of course, the song itself is amazing. I love everything about that scene 🙏🏿🙏🏿.
Okay you can’t be wrong when you’re right, but also the way it plays out with him singing “Just My Imagination” and leaving is actually one of my favorite scenes in cinema. Like the song is obviously about a woman, but everything in actual the scene is giving Eddie having hope that Paul would get better but he doesn’t and it was just his imagination 😔 I love this movie
I love this movie! This and the Jacksons were iconic in mini-series. Miniseries were really hitting back then. I now get how Paul and Al are alike- they were outspoken alcoholics as well. And Leon will always be fine! Fun fact: Rumor has it that Otis was engaged to Patti LaBelle. It was called off because he wanted her to be a housewife. I knew you were gonna do The 5 Heartbeats! Another iconic and meme worthy movie!
Whenever I think of the Temptations,I think of my grandfather who was a huge fan f theirs and hes the reason of how i know about them.He would play their music along with other artists. When my grandfathers funeral happened, they would play my girl and my whole family broke down in tears.I saw the the tv movie two tmes but wasn't born yet when it came out(I was born in 1999).Whenver I see this movie or hear their music, I always think of my grandfather.
Well actually if u go back and listen to Eddie earlier in the movie he said Paul would never drank plus it showed him telling David no on the bus that’s why Otis said it came out of nowhere Great review by the way
Although the movie's historical inaccuracies somewhat dulled its appeal for me, certain scenes, like the side-splitting 'ain't nobody coming to see you Otis' line, remained hilariously unaffected.
Actually, they weren't thinking about removing Paul. They were putting him on sick leave until he was physically able to come back. His drinking wasn't the main problem. At that time, Paul had sickle cell anemia, which to this day has no cure. Also, Shelly was such a great manager for The Temptations. He was always looking out for the every member of the group, and he didn't hesitate to call someone out for doing something wrong.
Love the video. I'm currently working on an assignment for my class, and I chose the song by The Temptations, "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" to analyze. This is one of my favorite movies ever, because I grew up listening to the Temptations as well, and Blue reminded me of my Uncle.

Paul started drinks after he found out he had leukemia. Poor guy, he had health issues and using alcohol to help him cope. If you look up their performances on Ed Sullivan show, you’ll see where he’s stiff, and can’t really move like the other guys 😢 he may have a had a flare up.

Shout out to Birmingham, AL (especially Ensley) which is home of Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams! Ok for the Boom Kay counter. And yes, the fellas were Fashion Killas! It’s sad how the powda was the driving force behind the talent 😬. David taking the mic from Dennis was wild!! Like where was security??!?? Goes to show how professional most of them were. Am I the only one who thought Richard (dude who was in the group before the fame) was fine??! Funny enough how the 3rd of September is almost here. Did you do this review to sync up with the date?? Just playing. Although Motown pushed out such great acts, it was a lot of mess behind the scenes. Do you or anyone else remember the scene where Melvin was seen rolling to get the short ribs and it shows him having difficulty breathing? I felt like it was a deleted scene or Mandela effect. David snatching the mike from Dennis will never not be funny to me. It will forever be one of my favorite scenes in a movie. I watch it over and over and laugh every time 😂😂
Ain't To Proud to Beg is one of my favorite songs.
Don't hang me ova no balcony
Red's hours: 9am to 5pm
Night like this, I wish raindrops would falll😂
Not the same movie that’s the five heartbeats
@jinny8431 that was the hint for the next film😂
I’ve been WAITING for this review for the longest time 😭
Me and my older sister would watch this and the Jackson 5 tv movie every chance we got. 😂
The new edition movie was really good too
The dedication to make it authentic was commendable. They sang the actual songs
“My office hours are from 9 to 5.” 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
That’s the five heart beats
Temptations is not my favorite movie but it DOES have my #1 favorite movie SCENE of all-time. And it's that ENTIRE part where David sneaks onto the stage and takes the microphone from Dennis in order to perform "Ain't Too Proud To Beg".
Everything about the scene is great to me, the slow walk to David approaching stage plotting his whole plan 😂.
During the performance how Blue and Otis were pissed at David but they had to hold their tongue to keep the performance going
The run-off David did off the stage, the confrontation afterwards "WITHOUT DAVID RUFFIN, Y'ALL AIN'T NOTHIN' 🗣"
and then of course, the song itself is amazing. I love everything about that scene 🙏🏿🙏🏿.
I loved Eddie but he was getting on my damn nerves thinking Paul could do no wrong!
Yes! He was like a little annoying child.. completely naive
@@GiftedKG exactly!
BTW this also won a primetime emmy as well as an NAACP Image award … but nobody remembers it for that
I love this movie!
That was true. Patti herself said it.
I knew my guess was right yesterday that car and cornbread is to iconic 😂😂
I just read recently the reason paul started drinking was because he was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia which was not talked about in those days
Had this movie on repeat. All these years I’m still crushing on the actor that played Eddie. 😍 Great review as always.
There must be a heart in the house tonight because we getting The Five Heartbeats after this! ❤❤❤❤❤
' hi Jo.. Im Flo ' 😂😂😂😂 I dont know why but that part always kills me LOL much love to the Temps ❤ one of the best groups in music history 🙏🏾
Eddie and Paul was real close that’s why he went so hard for him and even quit right after they let Paul go from the group
They all fit their roles so well, shout out to the casting agent which is often times underrated!!
This was my Sunday movie when I was a little kid every Sunday. I would watch it after church on VH1 rock
Well actually if u go back and listen to Eddie earlier in the movie he said Paul would never drank plus it showed him telling David no on the bus that’s why Otis said it came out of nowhere Great review by the way
“Ain’t nobody coming to see you Otis” 😂😂 classic
Five Heartbeats, another Leon film
Love the video. I'm currently working on an assignment for my class, and I chose the song by The Temptations, "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" to analyze. This is one of my favorite movies ever, because I grew up listening to the Temptations as well, and Blue reminded me of my Uncle.
I pray you get a on that paper
A
@@lekeciagarland6148Thank you! I hope I get an A, too.
This upload was brilliant, The Temptations biopic was the talk of the town watching it growing up! Can't wait for The Five Heartbeats 🔥!
When this min-series dropped i was 15 and my whole watched this for the whole week. I dont know why but i started crying at the end of this video. I can’t wait for the Five Heartbeats next week
"David and his slow stroll..." 😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂
I'm happy you're doing the 5 heartbeats next...these 2 movies are spiritual brothers! Great review!
Aaaaaaaah! The Temptations!!!! Great choice!😁I literally, just watched on DVD, this for the umpteenth on Monday. Been a minute, since the last time seeing it, before. I remember watching in, when it was first shown on NBC, when I was 19.
This movie 🍿🎥 was straight 💯🔥. Ain't nobody coming to see you OTIS!
The 'Boom Kat' counter tho ❤
'The Washington's go to Birmingham' was one of my favorite books growing up! I've read it countless times ❤
Red’s office hours are from NINE TO FIVE!!!! Yesss when I tell you have been waiting for a review of The Five Heartbeats for soooo long 😭 I can’t wait.
Didn’t the actress who played Johnny Mae also played in the movie “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” 🤔
Yes
I remember we didn't have cable and only had this on vcr. My brother and I watched it so much, we reenacted the whole movie 😂
Paul started drinks after he found out he had leukemia. Poor guy, he had health issues and using alcohol to help him cope. If you look up their performances on Ed Sullivan show, you’ll see where he’s stiff, and can’t really move like the other guys 😢 he may have a had a flare up.
I always enjoy watching The Temptations. It's of the best black biopics. You need to do a recap of Romeo Must Die.
I watched this religiously with my grandma ❤
I still watch this movies at least once a year. It still hold up soo well that why it is a classic !!
The Temptations are one of my Dad’s favorite groups, the other is Earth Wind & Fire. I love the Temptations!! Their B sides are top tier. Excellent review 🙌🏽🙌🏽
I can't believe this tells the story up to 3 years before the miniseries airs. It feels like nearly a century ago!
My 12th Grade English teacher introduced me to the Temptations when she showed this movie in class
“Why you always on the ‘raod’?” “Then ‘dew’ it! Be my ‘fawther’!” 😄😄😄😄
Lmao
Lmao that always takes me out!
😂😂😂😂
Omg you should watch @Im_2good’s parody of that scene 😂
Takes me out every time 💀💀💀
Your next review is going to be The Five Heartbeats. The Temptations was a tear jerker especially when the members started to pass away.
Now you gotta do The Five Heartbeats 💗
Absolutely
I used to think Leon was a real singer cause he was in “The Temptations” & “The Five Heartbeats” 👏🏾👏🏾my ex boyfriend knew every damn word of this movie lol ITS A CLASSIC WE STILL WATCH IT EVERY YEAR ON TUBI
LOVE YOUR REVIEW & FINAL THOUGHTS!
Silent Night is always on repeat during the holidays. No matter which family member house I’m in lol.
Welcome back girl!!
This movie brought back a lot of memories. I think I was in the 3rd grade when I saw this for the first time and cried at the end. Loved your review!!
As for next week’s review, all I’m going to say is TFH!!! From 9 to 5!
No lie, "The Temptations in a Mellow Mood" is a phenomenal album.
It's the only Temptations album that i listen to constantly.
I grew uuuup watching the Temptations!😆 Definitely one of my favorite movies as a little girl. P.S, (Phat Girlz( and (Hair Show) staring Monique are some pretty good Y2k movies to review❤ I just love your breakdowns🔥
I actually met the REAL OTIS WILLIAMS. He’s a really cool guy. And BLUE DIDNT NEED THEM SHORT RIBS!
Leon was also fantastic as Little Richard in the Little Richard movie that came out in 2000
When Melvin passes….a puddle of tears always 😭😖
I'm surprised no one faded with David because 😮💨, he was trying my patience like a son of a bitch 😂
I wish this video was longer but I still love it
This was a movie I watched all the time on VHS and DVD. Also the music in this movie played every Saturday or Sunday morning when we were cleaning up lol.
Temptations biopic, Jackson 5 and New Edition story top 3 bio’s with Ray put in there somewhere or in the top 5
I REMEMBER SEEING THIS WHEN I WAS LITTLE BUT DIDN’T REMEMBER UNTIL I SAW THE NOTIFICATION!!! OMG! 😂 thank you
Ayyyyyyy!!!! So glad u did this one…this was me and my mama movie 😢may she rest in peace 🙏🏽 miss her so much
17:00 Girl please the way you said, "Maybe both!" had me doubled over 🤣🤣🤣. Man was ALWAYS a menace.
I love this movie. It got me really into the temps catalog. Great music. I always feel bad for Paul and Melvin when I watch it
This movie is one of the best biopics ❤
As a kid, I used to think this was the longest movie ever😂
0:57 I have a great memory watching this with my father, he of course listened to them. But he was so excited to watch with me and tell me all about it. He passed a few months later 🕊️ definitely one of my favorite movies ❤
Edit: And my daddy also LOVED papa was a rolling stone. He passed the same day sep 3rd 💕💕
9...to 5! Can't wait for the next one!
This was a proper review. I love this movie and the care you gave to the coverage. Thank you!
Them office hours are from
NINE… to FIVE!!!!
Jennifer Lewis and Loretta Devine are the official mom's of black Hollywood lol. They have played everybody's mama at some point.
i keep forgetting that this movie was made in the late 90s.
It does not seem that old to me, but i was a young minor when it first aired on television. i think i was just going into the 9th grade.
"aint nobody coming to see you, OTIS " will forever be embedded in black culture
OMG The Five Heartbeats‼️‼️ I *CAN NOT* WAIT‼️‼️‼️‼️
“It’s gone be some mess or the show is getting canceled !” 🤣🤣🤣 I’m crying !
Big redds office hours are from 9-5 can’t wait to watch the 5 heartbeats
10:34 Apparently after this scene, David beat up Tammy in the car but it was cut off because Otis didn't want to relieve it.
I always get emotional when i watch this movie or listen to they music cuz i was raised by my grandpop and they was his favorite group 💯 especially david ruffin 😂
It’s “The Cancel for Me” about Mel Jackson 😂
Good video
