The Tesla Model Y's Wireless Charger Sucks

- The OEM Tesla Model Y wireless charger is a poor attempt at integrating Qi wireless charging to the vehicle. It simply is rendered useless due to its poor penetration of phone cases. Aftermarket options are available to improve on the original design, in order to charge phones in their native state aka with a phone case on.

Great video, thanks. Very happy to see how modular the design is and can be upgraded.

Case makes it too high for charge location
Mine has same problem.
I took out bottoms phone holding thing and lower the phone with case. It started charging
The problem wasn't that it couldn't penetrate the case. The problem was that the lip along the bottom (the black piece @3:15) is too narrow and doesn't allow your phone to sink down into the correct position over the wireless charger. @1:58 you can see the case by itself sits higher than the phone as the phone was able to slide down into the correct position. Shitty design on Tesla's part, luckily the refresh in 2021 has resolved this for new builds as there's no more lip. Thanks for the video though, I'll be picking up an aftermarket charger for my 2020 Model Y as well. Don't think I'll be going with this one as your auxiliary USB port (USB C) gets used up unnecessarily to use both chargers. And I'd rather not pay extra for C to A adapters or Y cables to make this work as the OEM does.
change to xiaomi, with case, it still works!!! I had abandoned samsung iterations 4 years after buying every year a new model of samsung galaxy for 10 years.... so with xiaomi, problem solved, no need and no point to blame model Y wireless charging pad. blame the samsung case instead please!!!
and, you have a quad lock phone case. Some of the thickest cases I have ever seen.
I need a replacement wireless charger, where would I find one?
It won't charge any of my friend's phones that have samsung phones, I have a Samsung flip 3 and it doesn't work on this phone either. We also tried removing the phone cases and it still doesn't work... Really disappointing.
Model 3 does come with usb in glovebox. Mine came with the Tesla usb drive plugged into it.
hi zed im stuck between buying MYP and MYLR, what made you choose MYP and not MYLR even though you can get accel boost? I was going to get the MYLR with inductions and accel boost but that just lowers the price difference even more and then I consider $6-7k for MYP is probably worth the speed and i also think later on i might feel i made wrong decision so what made u decide? i drove both and i love MYP acceleration and although LR is fast i got high off how fast MYP was
I want to make a video about this soon. I'm not 100% sure I made the right decision with the performance but I can definitely say I don't regret it. I just want to try driving the long range which I haven't done yet before I make a video about it
@@zed4me thats fair bro, let me tell you i drove both one day apart and the acceleration in LR is not as violent/exciting as MYP. The only thing is see if you can get your hands on a LR +accel boost which is just a second slower than MYP because we cant just go offf what tesla website says since MYP in real life with heated tires on a hot summer day is doing 0-60 in 3.4 seconds even though website says 3.7. another thing is just knowing you have the best is a major factor, i also ride motorcycles and my area has some c63 and lambo (aventador), r8s, and few other sportscars like viper ACR G Wagon G63, Range Rover SVR, bently, etc so i want a fast car not just something that is 'good enough' which is LR. I know red caliper, and spoiler can all be done aftermarket, hell you can even buy the ubertines aftermarket, the the real thing is the speed increase which 3.4 for 0-60 is the main attraction. I also then think if i get the base Y with accel boost i can cruise around and not like every red light i'm going to gun it, but then i imagine those moments a c63 pulls up or something and you wish you had MYP to smoke em LMAO
also i will def watch video but briefly why u think u made right decision? im asking because i am making this decision in a few days or weeks depending on when i can sell my ICE and ur video might come out too late :(
@@Rhyme905 I want the MYP but the 7 seats in the LR is so appealing! I also want the smaller wheel rims on the LR because of all the potholes etc, and I really hope that the LR with accel boost can make up for the performance deficit :(
I'm also hoping that the higher seats and suspension don't make the car less fun than a Model 3/Golf R :o
@@play150boost is still not same like MYP violent acceleration because even with boost the MYP is still 1.5 full second faster, you need twice the boost if it even existed plus .3-.5 more to make it as fast as performance! and smaller wheel rim for summer u want the grippy and sticky 21" but i switch for 19" in winter --- in summer just drive carefully try to avoid potholes this is not the only car on road with 21" wheels
Model y delivered 30 April has good charging with phone case. The charging pads cannot be removed in the new deliveries
You think your model y has a good charging pad? My model y's wireless charging pad (2021 model delivered 9/20/21) will not charge my iphone 13 pro max through a normal case. In fact, i left the case off on a long drive, with my phone just sitting there, and it's barely a trickle charge. Phone charged from 47% to 49% in about 1 hour of charging. Worthless.
Why why they have charger in the right side case
47 minutes vs 56 minutes to full is why I kicked the Taptes to the curb (+ the double side tape mount). Went with Jeda (cost more).
My Jeda can't actually charge my phone -- it is able to maintain the charge/charge it VERY slowly, but it's useless. Your experience is better?
@@davidlichtman568 Can’t really say yet, but the problem may be the low feed from the usb ports. Some people adapt their wireless chargers to the cigarette lighter hiding in the console compartment that has the tray. You might try that.
Link for the accessory doesn’t work
Have the 2021 model Y with the updated wireless charging pad and it still blows. My iphone 13 pro max will not charge through the case, unless i flip the phone upside down. Even upside down, with charging apparently working - it charges super slow.
Just 5W unfortunately.
My model Y charges my iPhone with no issues. I never have to remove my case. perhaps they have improved the design of the charger?
Iphone is different from Samsung in size. Might be a reason as wireless is location dependant.
The case on his Samsung has a clear bump on the back where the coils are located. Maybe with a normal case his phone would charge.
I have an iPhone 12 mini and I had a tech out cause it barely even holds a charge.
The tesla service tech told me that their charger doesn’t work with small or extra large phones. Such BS.
What is the brand exactly? I can’t find this item?
My Tesla is a 2022 btw so they have not upgraded the charging pad obviously
So maybe a silly question, but why not just plug both of the charging cables into that one dongle splitter into the USB-A instead of using the USBC port with the adapter?
I think it’s because he wanted to use the other one for his wife’s iPhone.
does anyone know if the charging through a case will work if you buy a magsafe case for iphone?
I'd bet it would still work. One issue however is the wireless chargers in Tesla's are just 5W, so charging will probably be slow.
Solution: use a case without a camel bump on the back. But I agree, it should be more powerful. I believe they are 5W. They should be 15W.
The new model 3 with the upgraded interior has an excellent wireless charger.
It’s trash. Barely can keep any phone at the same percentage. I’ve been super unhappy with it.
It actually sucks
Wrong. It won't charge any of my friend's phones that have samsung phones, I have a Samsung flip 3 and it doesn't work on this phone either. Really diappointing.
I purchased a magsafe case and I can charge my iPhone in the Tesla.
Must have changed cause mine and my wife's work fine with different cases.
I know I’m not the only one that’s thinking that sounded like I broke in Lego piece of a Lego game
My samsung ultra wont fit too long.
Truth
Yup. Got our Y two months ago and the wireless charger sucks.
Yup. New Y here. Charger sucks.
I don't think you got the sample and making no response is the right thing
That’s a Taptes
Don't they come with a wireless charger built in?
It sucks beyond belief. Won't charge through a case - and if it does, charging is so slow you may as well forget it.
Boi be grateful to have a wireless charging
It's not like it came for free lol.
@@didxogns1 well get your usb and just put it in. Simple
My iPhone works through the case. Must be a Samsung issue.
So it's a Samsung issue? But after replacing the charging pad, Samsung works fine too? I noticed that his case has a big circular bump on the back of the phone which may hinder the original charging pad ability. Your iPhone case could be a thin case. I also would like to remind that Samsung phones have wireless charging capabilities years before Apple started using the feature. Samsung also was the first that has reversed wireless charging. And Android fast charging is leagues ahead of iPhones. I'm not a fan of fast charging. But fact is fact.
No, it's a fat case issue.
Dude... that’s your case for sure lol
Works fine with the aftermarket charger, and I'm not the only one with this complaint. Not sure why they supplied such a poor one when OEM is usually high quality.
@@zed4me Maybe I got lucky? The one I test drove worked fine through my case and my friend’s...
@@zed4me it may work with other wireless chargers, but your case has something large and protruding right in the middle back area where it should be charging.
@@zed4me Even in my 2021 model y, where they were nice enough to make the charging pad fully built in and non-removable, won't charge through a case. I have an iphone 13 pro max with a normal size case, and it will not charge through. One of the issues might be that the charging pad is not magsafe - so the magsafe accessory case i have might be blocking that charging. Either way, it sucks. I'm looking to use the original Apple magsafe charger, fix it to the charging pad, and run the cable up under the paneling and plug into the rear usb-c port. Wires will be almost completely hidden..
@@jonathanfields4ever I think the bigger phones struggle because the charging coil in the pad does not line up with the charging coil's placement on the larger phones, causing them not to work.
Hey bro love your videos. I've been trying to get a hold of you via email for a while. Can you please check your email? This is the amazon seller that messaged you about the installation video as we talk before. Thanks.
Dude just take the case off 🤦♂️
Samsung galaxy sucks, get an iPhone 12 bruh
My iphone 12 max do not charge even without case
