Creating a vocabulary about choreography and artistry for gymnastics; knowing when choreography is successful:
Is it a complete performance? Coherent and part of a whole.
Range and quality of expression; acting
Connectedness of movements
Construction of the choreography; is it just steps rather than a journey with a start, arc and end
Quality of movement; fluid movement
Successful choreography is agnostic of style
Does the style of movement fit the gymnast

As always, Spencer so eloquently praised Becky and her deserving spot in the team, but not only that, spoke so beautifully about how this team is incredibly lucky to have her, she could have quit after getting hit so hard by them for so long, and instead chose the sport and support her country once again.
Appreciate the Becky Downie hype. She deserves every single bit of it ❤
I love her so much!!! I'm so glad she's back.
Hope she makes the Bars final!
She is GB WAG's best hope for medal in a Jess-less team.
It wasn't Qiu Qiyuan's coach Liu Tao actually. It was Huang Zhuofan's coach Lu Le. Huang was competing in the first half, so her Coach Lu was preparing the bars for Huang. Liu Tao didn't show up at all until the 2nd half of competition
so it’s not sabotage!!! It’s unfair to judge qqy’s coach!
Terry Gannon is good. He's not just "not Al Trautwig offensive", he clearly makes an effort with every sport he covers to understand what is going on, he appreciates the athletes, and he knows good and bad when he sees them for the most part without being told. I like him. AND he doesn't talk too much most of the time.
I love that nbc added him, I enjoyed figure skating 100 percent more these days too because I enjoy Terry’s commentary so much
@@LilTurtleBug I heard him commentating for golf one time, and I felt so thrown off! 😂. He was great at that, too.
Melanie’s new floor routine and Brooklyn Moors 2019 floor routine are by far my top favorite floor routines ever. Just absolutely stunning!!
Spencer!! So happy to see you!! ❤
**Mini commission idea** Dr. Laura Cappelle critiques all top UCLA floor routines from the past five years!
Great suggestion! Thank you
Yes please!
I must say kudos to you and Spencer for these podcasts! I have grown into so much more of a fan of the sport and really get to learn so much from watching these. As someone who was an occasional viewer around Olympics, I am now glued to my tv everytime a meet is on whether men’s women’s or ncaa. Thank you all for sharing your knowledge and insider information with us ❤️
Thank you so much!
Can someone please show that interview with Laura to Tim Dagett before he gets to comment the olympics🙏
I thoroughly enjoyed everything Dr. Cappelle had to say. I'd love it if she did some play-by-play analysis of floor routines. Even more intriguing would be if she were to also do it for men's floor, as well ... not in terms of dance, but to strategize how to return them to the artistry of say a Yuri Balabanov floor routine.
Great suggestion! Thank you
Saaaame!!!
Dr. Cappelle's suggestion for gymnasts to borrow more from choreographers that have some notoriety or thematically from other dance performances was refreshing to hear! Yes, yes, yes!
As a former Rockette & now choreographer, oh how I love this episode!!! Every. 👏 Single. 👏 Word. 👏 sign me up to work with the gymnasts for my next chapter 🙌
SPENCER’S HERE!! MY DAY IS COMPLETE!! ❤❤ So happy for Luo Huan, China’s oldest Olympian!! Becky (of course) deserves all the praise in the world. She is (obviously) deserving of an UB medal. I NEED BECKY DOWNIE OLYMPIC MEDAL!!!! (Manifesting Zhou and Qiu go 1-2 on beam, with a Suni bronze.) Congrats to Emma Nedov of Australia as well!!
I really don't see what Luo Huan brings to the team, though. She is very medium across the board. Du Siyu or Zhang Qingying would have been far superior picks, in my humble opinion.
@@davidjacobmarts535 I understand completely. In fact, they add almost a point to the team score on a perfect day. However, Luo Huan is FAR more consistent. In fact, Zhang Qingying fell twice on bars, once on beam, and her Rudi was very low. Her floor wasn’t on par either. I would’ve taken Du Siyu, BUT she didn’t hit her bars set at trials. (Zhang Yihan fell as well.) It was wonky, and so it was basically a “who has a better vault” betweeen her and Zhang Yihan. Luo Huan gives some stability to a young and inconsistent team (especially to Zhang Yihan.) She’s also a “plug in anywhere” gymnast. However, these may not be the reasons she’s on the team. Du Siyu has a lot of drama with the national team coaches. Zhang Qingying’s province (which is also Luo Huan’s province) rooted for Zhang Qingying to get the spot. However, after three falls and her Rudi only getting an 8.3 E, they ended up bidding for Luo Huan, who got the spot.
Du's 50% hit rate on bars is a nonstarter, but Her DTY is very consistent. Luo doesn't add much to the team. So it all comes down to internal politics for the 5th spot.
@@cocoroni1031 I completely agree! I think they didn’t take Du (definitely politics involved) but also because they want a gymnast who hits at least 2 events.
@@GymnasticsIsLife333 Considering that Chinese WAG's last team medal was 2018 (6 years ago), when Luo was a part of the team, maybe she will bring some luck lol.
LOVED every moment of Dr. Cappelle's insights.
As a dancer and choreogrpaher turned gymanstics coach, I LIVE for when my beloved movement styles & fav sports intersect 🥳
And Dr. Cappelle's voice reminds me of one of my fav ballet teachers 🥰
As to artistry, my big question is this... why does it seem as though most gymnasts have totally given up on pointing their toes through their skills? Just seems that is almost never done any more and it used to be pretty common to see.
Oh Spencer, I feel SO seen with your E-score/US WAG team comments! Also loved both of your comments re: Becky Downie - you need to clip it & send it to her as a motivational video when she's feeling down or unsure. PS. if you've not seen, it Abi's gentle poking fun on social media about her age -vs- Becky, Georgia-Mae and Alice a is heeeeeeelarious.
Wonderful program. Enjoyed the interview with Dr. Laura Chapelle, and I always like seeing / hearing Spencer and Jessica!
STOMP took me out lol
I have to find a place at Seattle Pride to watch trials!! I don't want to miss either.
Jessica, fireflies do typically arrive the last week of June. 🥰Not sure if they'll be on time with all of the rain... 🤔but yes, it will be firefly season.🎉😃💖
has anyone done a fx to rite of spring since Olga Strazheva? I love it for a less graceful/more serious gymnast
I would have used Yvonne Tousek's FX from 96 as an example of amazing dance technique and expression.
I miss Tim doing WAG because he would provide historical context, like "Suni is the world floor silver medalist!" I'll reach out to Sam and ask her to study, she's clueless about gymnastics history excluding her own trip to Beijing
I miss Tim as well. I know he is divisive on the gymternet, but no other commentator was as passionate as he was when a gymnast did amazing gymnastics, or had a mistake. Now the female commentators only care about being cool, and above it all, talk over routines, dont give any good analysis and that new dude from Golf is worthless.
Great information on teams and choreography!!! So excited for the Olympics!!
Can I just thank you guys for pronouncing the Chinese names almost correctly as compared to NBC's massacre of them! :)
Please have Laura talking about Russian floor excellence
Dementyeva, Grishina, Pavlova 🌹
Laura's commentary was so fascinating! I feel like Shilese could have stronger choreography and more dynamic music. It is very one-note the whole time without peaks and valleys. I know she choreographs some or all of it herself, and it's lovely, but I think she'd benefit from some outside opinions and maybe a change of music. She's so beautiful to watch, but there's just no "wow" in her floor routine for me.
The Germans have a ranking to determine who gets the spot based on scores and how they compare internationally. Eli Seitz said in an interview that she thinks she should get the spot even though Helen is currently in front of her, because according to her Germany never had a chance in the all around. Like girl come on, based on the insane bars field this year, you're lucky to make the final and thinking she could win a medal is just delusional
Honestly, just let Helen compete for the sake of Germany WAG's future. Seitz's 6.1D bars is nowhere competitive in this bars quad.
@@cocoroni1031 and I'm honestly afraid Helen won't make it until 2028 because she has been injured so many times already and I'm afraid they'll break her like Tabea Alt
@@Raven-ll9lm Helen entering AA final is way more probable than Seitz entering event final. To be frank, I don't think the seniors should make it in Paris over Helen after losing the team spot, especially when Helen has the best national AA score (inflation or not, she is first by a huge margin).
@@cocoroni1031 for sure. However the rules count medal chances higher than (event) final chances, but I really think Eli has no chance this year and Helen is the best at the moment
@@Raven-ll9lm I would be very shocked if 6.1D bars can get a medal. The rule encourages more risky connections and elements on bars, so the hit rate on bars is much lower across the board. But there are so many people who can score higher than Seitz on bars.
@Gymcastic When will the fantasy league for Trials be available to start using?
We hope to have it up very soon... maybe by this weekend.
We should have 1 spot where the world gets to choose 1 gymnast to go à la Hunger Games style.
I vote Chuso
Speaking of the Landis, do you guys know if they'll be able to watch their daughter compete?
Can someone find QQY’s coach’s video??
It actually wasn't QQY's coach, he didn't show up until 2nd half. It was another Chinese coach Lu Le, because his gymnast Huang Zhuofan was competing in the 1st half
Welcome, Daniel!! May we call you Practical Daniel??
1:15:10 Jess has one of the best artistry of the quad among top floor contenders, but she's still getting some .3 to .4 artistry deductions. Many top gymnasts will start from .3 artistry deductions, so as long as they are not terrible on artistry, they won't lose much relative to the top field. USA's main problem is the insane credit to tumor leaps. It's meaningless if they spend so much energy on tumbling and artistry, just to get cleared by judges on L hops and Gogeans...
The mosquito s will be out so have some spray if you plan to be outside. I am local to the ares
Just say debut for new gymnasts. A Chorus Line, Moulin Rouge, An American in Paris, Billy Elliot, Westside Story. Links to Lynzee Brown posted anywhere?
Trying to concentrate but Spencer is just so dam cute
I thought of the perfect Diva Cup/gymnastics ad. It's at WCC (bc of course) and the team is training in white leos (bc TV). One of the gymnasts starts her period in the middle of practice. They show the leak bc DESTIGMATISATION. The other gymnasts pull a spare Diva Cup out of their bag for her and a spare white leo (bc women supporting women) and then cut to that gymnast confidently hitting a skill and comfortable in a white leo. The ad would be called A Diva Cup is Magical as it would be criminal not to call it that.
I love this! 😍
I thought Lynzee had a coaching job? Why would she be homeless?
Sam is kinda not very good, no shade
I don’t even think it’s Sam, I think it is the dynamic with Terry. She is super knowledgeable, and was so good doing NCAA, but I think she would be better with another co-commentator.
@@taylorburtis why was Tim and Nastia let go? That was so confusing. I just feel like she is missing that special something that makes commentating exciting.
I agree. Sometimes her commentary is very frustrating. Like, she was confused about Jade’s low floor score but didn’t explain that it was most likely because of the artistry deductions. I know NBC isn’t perfect but I miss Tim Dagget commentating WAG.
@@rugbyplayer9100 I almost wanted to create a petition to bring Tim and Nastia back. But I know the gymternet hates them, but the rest of us miss them.
Everyone was confused by Jade’s low floor score after Kayla’s 14.1 on beam with that horrible tour jete half
I know no one cares but the Chinese men’s team selection is infuriating… their mind is so ancient.
Well women’s is too…if they took Wei Xiaoyuan instead of Ou Yushan they would have probably won a team medal and a bars medal…
There are internal politics behind and the men's selection is so discreet. The best prediction is by the ability to get gold over any dust medals.
@@Plaspos you meant in 2021? Wei has fallen out of form now
@@cocoroni1031 of course there is. One can only speculate. I love Sun Wei in Tokyo but I objectively don’t think he contributes more than Shi Cong to the team right now.
@@davfb8622 agree. It’s wild that the national AA champ is left home 🤔
I'm gutted for for du siyu
If she doesn't aim for the "fancy" 6.6D bars (but 50% hit) in the beginning, or she doesn't make enemy with the leaders, she will get the spot. It sucks.
:( I really hoped Qingying would be healthy bc they REALLY needed the rudi.
Seems like the Chinese women are going with the AA route. I hope it doesn’t cost them a medal bc Du Siyu offers a lot more imo than Luo Han
Qingying is healthy enough. She did a good vault (for China) at trials and showed a floor routine after not doing that event the past year. The Chinese team was based on politics and tunnel vision rather than math of what the best team is. The coaches like Ou Yushan and Luo Huan for being submissive and relatively consistent, but neither of them are showing very high scores on individual events.
Qingying is clearly not healthy, the Rudi scored only 13.7, the Weiler kips on bars were clearly undertrained, and still no usable floor. If she was healthy she should have easily made the team with her level of difficulty instead of Ou or Luo. And in fact the politics did favor her, on social media they claimed her provincial team clearly favored her over Luo Huan (because Zhang is a better medal prospect for next year’s National Games) but were overruled by the national team selection because of Zhang’s poor performance at trials.
Once Wu Ran was not able to recover, Ou Yushan was always going to be on the team as she has the strongest national team coach and the strongest province (Guangdong). Du Siyu is the one who has a claim she was robbed because of politics, because even if she only did vault she would still be adding more than Luo Huan
@@Plaspos 13.7 is much higher than China's other vaults and her bars don't matter.
Du Siyu is too "disobedient" from the leaders' standpoints, and her 50% bars hit rate gives leaders a reason to reject her, so the Chinese team loses a very consistent DTY. Zhang Qingying's Rudi is nonexistent in Paris let's be fr🤔
@@Plaspos Qingying scoring "only" 13.7 is still MUCH higher than the next tier of Chinese vaulters, it adds a lot to the team. Her bars don't matter at all and she DID show a usable floor routine, she scored .1 better than Luo Huan there!
Why didn't you talk about Russia's pseudo Olympics
Irrelevant to talk about a massively overscored competition that has no effect in Paris.
She must really know God because she says His Holy and Mighty name constantly. Even when getting excited about fireflies. Could you please stop. Please. I know you warned about bad words. But could you stop taking the Lord's name in vain. That one is on another level.
She doesn't believe God is real, so I'm sure she doesn't hear it or think that's cursing. You can just choose not to listen.
Not everyone believes in God. She's entitled to free speech.
Excuse this 2024 your religious beliefs can't dictate what other people say or feel.
@@gymnasticsfan7036 funny thing, the rainbow people demand us to respect their crazy pronouns and throw a tantrum is we dare to "make a mistake" yet you dont respect other people`s religiosn, especially if it is catholic.
@@azieldaly2965 but do not use other people`s religion to curse. funny thing the rainbow people want us to use the silly pronouns regardless of what we think about them (utterly crap)
Also: what I would give to see Shilese Jones have a routine choreographed for her by Nicole Wooder (@nicolesartistry) who choreographs a lot of the GB WAG routines, including the Gadirovas 🤞
