  • Today I'm fishing for shockingly large brown trout for such small water. Using the beefy Tenkara Rod Co. "Rocky" rod, I attempt to nymph up some beasts that this water is known for! Thanks for watching!

Did you know I just started a RUclips Membership program? It's similar to my Patreon but without needing to leave RUclips to sign up. $2 gets you a custom emoji, priority responses, a special badge beside your name in the comments and behind the scenes content. $5 gets you all of that plus access to my soon to drop "Creator's Commentary" videos. Think like a director's commentary, where I sit and watch one of my own videos but expand upon my experience greatly with things that didn't make the cut, fly choice, tips and techniques and more. Amazing, stunning location Chris! Looks like the perfect river for that Rocky. You know those beautiful browns are beasts when you have to pan down their lateral line to get them in the camera frame. Your cinematography continues to be second to none. Thanks for sharing the experience!

I totally agree regarding your statement, "I don't even know if flies matter that much. General shape and presentation is about all."

Yes it can! I saw that you had to raise your arm and rod pretty high to keep the fish close to you - try shortening the line. I have had better luck when your casting line + tippett is no greater than 1 ft longer than your rod. This allows complete control and you can keep line tight and reach down with your other arm to release it, without having to elevate your casting arm so high. Many folks have line too long, then you have to hand-line the fish in. It’s amazing how big a fish you can land with Tenkara, I have landed 26” pike, and bass up to 4 lbs. It’s that power curve, some don’t understand, the long rod and distance of the bend make up for not being able to release more line out (like a reel does). Happy fishing!

Right on! 26'' pike is seriously impressive! I caught one maybe 18-20 inches, but skinny and it was a heck of a good fight. I'm usually in the same camp as you, never felt comfortable hand-lining. My line wasn't quite that long here but I definitely was rocking a bit more tippet than usual with my double nymph rig and desire to get deeper into a few of the bigger holes. Could have shorted my main line by a foot or so but laziness often prevails on the water, and a little extra reach didn't hurt either I suppose.
