- From her tribute album to the great Count Basie, Keely Swings Basie-Style.with Strings, here is Keely Smith’s performance of the jazz classic, "How High the Moon," written by Morgan Lewis and Nancy Hamilton, first appearing in the 1940 Broadway revue Two for the Show. The album, in which Keely was accompanied by an 18-piece band and a 22-member string orchestra led by pianist/conductor Dennis Michaels, was released by Concord Records in 2002. Keely is superb in this later LP for Concord; thanks for posting this gorgeous rendition of this classic song, catman!
Beautiful voice!
Her voice is still very much "On the Money". Couple of flats but her texture is just so sublime. Everybody gets that warble in the vibrato but she's pretty much got that under control. Can never get enough of her. Louie-You Blew It !!!
In her prime, she was superb, but she has retained much of what made her one of the best female singers of the 20th century.
Too bad, because she never really stopped loving him.
Amen, sir! Sorry we lost Dorothy/Keely almost 3 years ago. I didn't know she existed until 2012. Keely inspired me to start singing in public in 2015. This wonderful lady is the greatest female singer ever! I email her daughter from time to time. Yes,Louie blew it to the MAX!!!!!!!!!!! God bless you, sir, and Roll Tide! Richard from Crimson Tide Country
THANK YOU for this beautiful video.....It's gorgeous, I love it, the song and singer are fabulous.
It's crazy how her voice has barely changed at all, she's so good :)
caitfrann Unfortunately time has taken its toll, but considering her age when she recorded this, she sounds better than many younger singers. If you are a fan, caitfrann, check out my many KS uploads from her prime.
If you play and know this tune, do not even think about missing the introduction here. Then try to play along. You won't understand what happened, but you'll love it!
I’m glad you like Keely’s version. I wrote this chart for her, knowing full well she could effortlessly follow the changes. One of the best of all times.
Splendid - giving Sarah Vaughan a run for her money! Bed-ridden (some viral thing) and embarrased to say that I had not come across this at all! Wow!
