There was something wonderfully mischievous about Les Paul's playing .... I like how he made tuning up part of the improv .... That man was one of a kind.
Hell fire!! A fruend of mine was talking to me about Les Paul in the pub tonight. Came home and straight on RUclips. What a genius to still play like that when he was that age. Incredible!!!
The Midwest is not a fly over country. One of many hearts of the United States. Thankful for myriads beauties of people, land, water, lakes, prairies I have yet to discover,
I frequented Fat Tuesday's to see The Les Paul Trio 3 times during this period and it was truly great. The basement club ceiling was so low that Gary Mazzaroppi's bass would touch the ceiling if held vertical. Great memories of a legendary musician.
Had the pleasure and honor of seeing Les a number of times here at the Iridium and attending his 90th birthday at Carnegie Hall. What an incredible talent and mind whom we owe so much. Les, you are sorely missed. Thank you so much for posting.
Thank heavens for Les Paul and Mary Ford. Les inspired so many great artists, Jeff Beck heard Mary and he playing on the radio when he was a 6 year old and told his mum "that is what I want to do when I grow up." Chris have you heard the Jeff Beck and Imelda May tribute to Les Paul on what would have been his 95th birthday at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City? Their rendition of Les and Mary's songs will knock the socks off any Les Paul fan, their music is spectacular.
No it's not. It sucks. He wrecked the whole thing. Why do they always give the individuals time in the limelight? Go see Les Claypool and then we'll talk....or Nik West among others.
les paul is the godfather of electric guitar. him and chet atkins the greatest of all time. he is shredding here. most metal players could only wish they could do what les
david young yes he is shredding but it’s more of an experimental shredding, but it’s not like joe pass or metal shredders because the time isn’t really as solid as those guys are. Still think this is amazing ofc
Les Paul was a Maverick in instrumental music. My dad Ozzie Bowen was also a musical genius, like Les Paul & had his own t.v. show, the Ozzie Bowen Show, broadcast from Channel 12 t.v. in Jackson, Miss 6:30 to. 7:30 ea sat, back 1957-1960. Joe G. Bowen Miss Gulf Coast
Absolutely one of the most exceptional Artist and inventors of American history, practically like a clinic going to one of those shows ... Thank You Les for being you!
Saint Les,,,,been thru so many battles,,, he has seen so much,,,,,yet he is happy in his lot with friends,,,,and colleagues ,,,God Bless you Les,,,youve seen it all,,,
Some comparisons with Django and The Hot Club Of Paris there. Great rhythm guitarist and bass player , and Les sometimes plays Django style licks and chords. Outstanding! To be able to produce those sounds live is a technical achievement in itself.
The first time I heard "How high the moon", recorded by Les Paul and Mary Ford was in Korea in 1952. I had gone on R&R to Fukuoka, Japan, where I bought a turntable and some other albums as well, by Frankie Laine, Patti Page, and that other lady who had the hit at that time, "Wheel of Fortune."
If I have a complaint it’s this: This type of arrangement of THIS song should always pay particular notice of the bassist since their contribution is immense! Would love to have seen Mr. Paul verbally give recognition at closing when acknowledging the applause 👏. The ‘conversation’ couldn’t have taken place without their talents!! Bassists. I SALUTE YOU ALL!!!
If I were a guitarist (which I’m not) would have been a disciple of Mr.Paul. IMHO when a solo becomes a duet the duetist(?????) should receive equal acclaim! OK, ‘nuff said. Will shut up now!
I was lucky enough to be Les Paul's friend and to work for him and listen to his music first hand now work for his foundation that gives Grant's for music education... lespaul.org
Lou Pallo must know just about every chord there is - Gary Mazzaroppi is one of the best (otherwise Tal Farlow wouldn't have hired him) and Les Paul knows just about every way to win your heart - Fat Tuesday - Mardi Gras !
i noticed on this guitar he is playing the control knobs are in a row do you think because of his arm injury from that car wreck back when he had that modified
Clearly, this man, the definition of GENIUS. I will always play a, Les Paul Custom. The guitar literally plays itself. What a great duel between bass and Les, lol
I am alone in front of my computer, standing up, clapping with tears of joy. What a genius Les Paul was!

Yes he was! Amplifiers+Multi-Track Recording+Guitar Genius ❤️🔥🎶

I've spent almost my whole life in the Midwest. I think it's a beautiful place full of Americana.
Could fill an encyclopedia with all the techniques and phrasing ideas he's using here. The musical dynamics are just flawless.

Nobody told me that there were two legends in this video: The unforgettable Les Paul and that outstanding bassist!
Don't forget Lou Pallo, the man of a thousand inversions.
Almost like Duelling Banjos!
@@Ardamax_ Bass player here is astonishingly good. Sadly I don’t know his name.
Incredible musicianship on that stage
What a treasure. And a gift to us all. God Bless Les Paul and also Mary Ford. Thank you.
Every time I went to New York ,my first night was spent in the Iridium wallowing in the sound of Les Paul, how I miss him.
So cool. Loved how he tuned and it sounded 100% musical. He has Django's touch of creativity.
THE MASTER MUSICIAN, TECHNICIAN, PRODUCER, INVENTOR, & GREAT HUMAN! RIP SIR LESTER
Genius inventor, very funny guy, and an amazing, instantly recognizable guitar player. Saw this trio in Boston - it was one incredible night.
Absolutely in awe. And the bass player is from another galaxy.
What a moment lost in between Multiverses,,, timelessness captured. Thanks.
Never gets old, never will.

Nothing sounds better than a Les Paul... except Les Paul playing a Les Paul haha 😂❤️🎶
Everyone, raise a toast to Mr. Les Paul and be seated.
I loved listening to les and Mary play . Whin they played out of Chicago on TV .
still listening just great music and thank you for the music
You can tell he hears Mary singing while he plays. Just his expressions show the nostalgia from his old days, its really something..

There will NEVER, EVER be another Les Paul.
He made that guitar sound so great.
I went almost every Monday for both sets for two years ❤
His breakouts are so effortless, fast but still melodic and fits with the tune. Absolute command of the fretboard.
Les pulls about all the stunts on this one! I truly Loved 😍 him ❤
Another beautiful rendition of one of Les's signature songs...! Loved Les Paul's cool and flashy style... Nobody had that sound and style like Les...!
cool and flashy. Jeff Beck/Les Paul. RIP.

Les Paul sharing with us mere mortals how it's really done, he even makes tuning part of the song. Where's the LOVE button?!
The definition of refined guitar playing
The original version with Mary singing is one of my all time favorite recordings across all genres.
The dude on the stand up bass is a monster! Les knows and is pure talent 👌
Perfect. Les Paul - The BEST!! Thanks for the upload.
Most Amazing Guitar playing I've ever Seen!!
the best bass player
What a legend, simply the best, that ever was, or will be .
~ OUTSTANDING !!
The call-and-answer with the bass player is sensational !

Those old listerine commercials with les paul and mary ford are insane. His playing style was so unique and so good.
wow!...talk about an intimate concert....with a legend.
I agree! The bass is fantastic. So is the guitar player. Les is beyond great.
Impeccable...Did he ever play a "wrong" note. always accurate.
If he ever played a "wrong" note or a "clam" he'd leave it in. STILL perfect.
Magical 😎❤️🎸
My mom told me years ago that she danced to this song at her high school prom that same year when the record came out. How lucky they were. :-)
They didn't play one good song at my prom in 2000. Not one. I mostly listen to music from your mom's era.
Absolutely brilliant!!! :)

1991, before his hands were crippled by arthritis; it's sad to see some of the later recordings from The Iridium.
Wow what master showman in total control. Just beautiful.
thank you Mr. Lentz for these great videos!!
Les Paul, so far ahead of his time, and still sounded great doing this show, all those years later. R.I.P. Les., and thank you beyond words.
Never have mastered this number which is why I like it so much.

This almost makes me wanna cry. Mary died to young.. RIP
What I wouldn't give, to be there watching Mr. Les Paul from that front row.
Bravo!!! Simply brilliant.
What a great musician, he makes it look so easy
Les had such a sweet clean tone for melodies. What a talent.

Les' playing is as good as ever here. Of note, his bass player was absolutely incredible!
This guy plays like he invented that guitar! Oh, yeah, right.......
Indeed he did. He was inspired by Paul Bigsby's guitars though, the Bigsby vibrato guy.
Yeah, nobody comes close to Les when he gets that special sound of his Les Paul.
So beautiful.
It’s a shame the human body deteriates . There’s some folks it would be nice if they could stay around forever, Les Paul is one of them
