Chad you left out a very important part that causes backlashes a lot. If you cast into the wind with a light lure people tend to cast harder. So it creates a nasty backlash. If a user casts into the wind with a heavy lure it most likely can keep up with the reel spinning forward and stop appropriately. You will really need to define your settings much better when casting into the wind. Another way to avoid the backlash when you cast into the wind no matter what bait you use or lure you use if you cast low and do a side arm cast I use that and rarely do I ever get a back lash. The weight of the lure and how hard you throw it into the wind needs to be looked at closely when fishing in windy conditions. Keep it side armed and low will do the trick. Get it up in the wind it stops it every time. Thanks man. I hope your wife is doing well!!! God Bless man!!!
have worked with inexperienced angler before and spent all day removing backlashes so this is a video all new anglers should be interested in. and even some of us old farts . appreciate the refresher.
Absolutely BEST video on backlash we have seen. Also, showing the mistakes really helps explain how-to and how not-to do it. Appreciate you have the guts to keep the video of the not so perfect stuff, as it really helps! Great video!!!!
Chad, I have dealt with my share of backlashes, the steps you layed out are spot on knowing the right steps to take when soloving problems make things easier.
Good info, Chad. I'm left handed but swing right (baseball, golf...) as that's how they taught most kids in the 70s and 80s. I'm still stuck confirming which side I should have my retrieve on with casting reels. I've got a few left and a few right retrieves. Spinning gear I'm all right hand retrieve. Baitcasting has been a challenge as a lefty. For me anyway. Videos like these, that some may think novice, go a long way with me.
I personally don't subscribe to traditional thinking on this. I reel with my right hand on both casting and spinning and always have. I cast with my left and right hands, but it doesn't make sense to me to have to change hands on every cast so I cast left handed with a right handed and reel and I can start reeling immediately if needed.
I don't know if you read after the fact after you make a video but I appreciate I was having trouble I'm trying to learn how to use a baitcaster and I kept getting back last and you just cured that problem for me I appreciate you thanks buddy and I subscribe and I'll definitely watch more of your videos
Thanks Chad, I usually get my backlashes out. I just never knew what I did right to get them out, lol. Now I understand the concept. Very informative. Thank you
Thank you so much I was getting ready to give my bait caster as a Christmas present to a co-worker, because it is such a pain to try and figure out. I will give it another try and see if I can make it work.
I can through its side armed and it don't backlash but when I go over head at backlashes all the time is it just more practice or putting the brakes a little bit more on it I still can't do it. I can only throw it sidearms
As someone who mostly fishes with spinning rods, this is a helpful video. I have one baitcaster, and it’s been a process. I caught two bass with it so far this year. The main question I have is setting the drag. How do you set the drag properly? I ask that because I got burned a month ago in a tournament. I had on a bass with a white 1/2oz swim jig, and when he was almost to the boat, the line stopped coming in. It turns out my drag was set wrong. I’ve fixed it since by evidence of those two bass since, but any tip would be helpful. I fish using 12lb mono as I don’t get as many backlashes and is easier to pull a backlash out. Thanks.
Thank you for showing how to set up a reel to prevent and how to fix a backlash. I’ve never tried a bait caster because I’ve been so afraid of backlashes. So do all bait casting reels set up the same way or is each different?
casting into the wind I can get some humdingers , like the lead end seizing up before the lure stops, pickin it out doesn,t always work so I tighten my drag and push down on the spool with my thumb, then crank it a couple revs , this usally lets ya peel off some line real slow, hit a loop, do it again
You can always just add a little friction knob and centrifugal before casting into the wind to help avoid that. Like one click on the centrifugal and two or three on the friction knob.
If you never get a back lash your telling a fishing story. Then, I thumb it and I never get a back lash. Lol good stuff! Just giving you a hard time chad. I keep mine loose and thumb it. I used to always get them when I tied to dial my reel in perfect. My problem was my casts didn’t stay the same every time. I would get greedy wanting distance and boom!!! Game over! With practice on thumb control I was more confident and accurate with my casts. Now I can throw a ned rig on a SLX. Great video chad.
I understand. I was just picking with you. It was kind of funny. I love your videos and have learned so much from them. Your great for the community and I know I appreciate it. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the floro tip. I will definitely try stretching it a bit.
It means you aren't fishing enough to stretch it. LOL . No, in all seriousness it is an issue and it's why I fish primarily braid. To get the memory out though when I do fish flouro I treat the line with Reel Snot, which helps, and then I literally hook the lure on a fence and walk out about 100' and just stretch it for a minute or two.
Great information Chad! As luck would have it I kind of stumbled on that method after pulling my line tight a few times 2 many and having to pick that V out with an all or even a fish hook. Your method is so much simpler.
I usually get my backlashes out. BUT there have been times they so bad i have had to cut my line. Those are the BAD ones lol.It does happen and you need to show those. Great tutorial tho
It's really the same premiss but just takes longer. I will do a video next time I get a bad one or around someone that does or maybe just fake it and do one on purpose to do a video for yall.
Hey Chad I find if you have big finger it's some time hard to grab the line.. A #2 crochet will help..pickup linen Ask your wife kristie if she has one to try...
@@ChadHooverFishing The small flat ones work great to get a loop pulled up, my favorite is a small cone-shaped one, I have not replaced the one I had since I dropped it in a lake though. lol They don't damage your line either which is nice. They fit right in your PFD pocket also, but they will work their way out the drain hole and tend to poke you.
Have you seen the technique where you pull your line out until you can't anymore then you apply hard pressure to the spool with you thumb and crank the reel about 5 times then you click the bail over and start pulling line out again. Works about 90% of the time. Learned it BassFishin.com

Thanks. These are important to do periodically
Awesome video! Just got a baitcaster and your advice on adjusting the brakes and the spool tension was exactly what I was looking for!
Awesome info, I just started fishing in March and I was hesitant to get a baitcaster. This makes me a lot more confident, thanks.
Thank you for nice video, good way to fix birds nest. Good working brakes, nice cast - minimum amount of backlashes.
Absolutely BEST video on backlash we have seen. Also, showing the mistakes really helps explain how-to and how not-to do it. Appreciate you have the guts to keep the video of the not so perfect stuff, as it really helps! Great video!!!!
That's awesome. Glad you like it. I have some videos coming soon of doing it right that were captured from your camera pole. Loving it.
First year ill be using bait casters. Disabled and my hands aren't the greatest anymore. This soothsayer some of my worries. Appreciate it
Chad,
I have dealt with my share of backlashes, the steps you layed out are spot on knowing the right steps to take when soloving problems make things easier.
Thanks. Glad you liked them. You are too much of a pro to get backlashes though. LOL

Thanks Chad!! Braid backlashes are the worst, gonna keep these tips in mind!!

That’s awesome. I go back and read them as much as I can. Glad the video helped. Thanks for watching.
This might be one of the best tips ive seen, thanks Chad !!👍👌👏🐟🎣
Thanks!!
Wow.....where has this tip been all my life!!! Great video, thanks Chad!
Waiting to be released I guess. I have a bunch more coming. Thank y'all for the support.
Chad Hoover Keep ‘em coming man!!
Great instruction on how to fix a backlash... the step by step makes it look easy to do... keep up the good work sir!
best explanation I have seen ! Thanks Chad!
Thank you Rick
Amen buddy, happens to us all... Excellent advice Brother!! 👊
Thank you sir. New coffee slomo coming soon.
Looking forward to it Brother!! 👊☕
Awesome tip thanks Chad. I sometimes avoid using my bait caster in fear of backlash but how you’ve explained to get one out gives me hope.
That's great. Don't fear the backlash, conquer it.
Excellent Chad, thanks for the help.
Good vid. It's all about finding that V, pulling up on it as far as you can, then pull your main line forward. Works every time.
Yessir. Pull to the V.
Very informative video, Chad! Thanks for these helpful tips!!!
Thanks that was very helpful. 👌
That's great. Glad that I could help.
Thanks Chad, I usually get my backlashes out. I just never knew what I did right to get them out, lol. Now I understand the concept. Very informative. Thank you
Thanks.

Great topic and information
Thank you!
Thanks for this tip. I have been needing a way to help me fine tune my gear. Rey helpful. Thanks again Chad
Thanks. Glad it helped.
I heard KBF is going to allow electric motors in the tournament’s this year. Can you do a segment on that?
Can u do a video on how to properly spool a spinning reel?
I can through its side armed and it don't backlash but when I go over head at backlashes all the time is it just more practice or putting the brakes a little bit more on it I still can't do it. I can only throw it sidearms

They are all pretty similar.

Yeah, I do too, but this video is needed for those just getting started or struggling with fishing baitcasters.

Nice info!
Am I better off starting the centrifugal brake at max or 50% to start my fine tune process after the spool adjustment is made?
Max or 75% and back down from there.
Your a good man 👍
Thank you.
What is your thoughts on line memory with floro chad? I get more when I use it.

As the king of backlashes (I’m so good at them, I’ve wrapped my head like a mummy many times), I needed this video.
Great information Chad! As luck would have it I kind of stumbled on that method after pulling my line tight a few times 2 many and having to pick that V out with an all or even a fish hook. Your method is so much simpler.
Awesome. I am glad that it helped.
The backlash that has cost me most is skipping with the bait caster. I’ve missed more fish back lashing on an attempted skip than any other time.
That’s really a thumb control thing.
I am the king of backlash... lol Thanks for the tips
I've named my Kayak "The Birds Nest"
That's funny right there.
Wes Ley, Hilarious!! 😂
Best video on resolving the backlash, or "My Life in 11m:29s"
Thanks! I appreciate that
Wow very nice 😘
I backlashed a couple weeks ago and caught a 2 pounder when I fixed it and reeled it in... let luck happen lol
That's the best kind, where you still get the fish.
I usually get my backlashes out. BUT there have been times they so bad i have had to cut my line. Those are the BAD ones lol.It does happen and you need to show those. Great tutorial tho

Hey Chad
I find if you have big finger it's some time hard to grab the line.. A #2 crochet will help..pickup linen Ask your wife kristie if she has one to try...
I use a couple dental tools to dig out those deeper ones that are impossible to get your finger on.
I have a little fly fishing tool that I use. But I have considered what Chase said about dental tools.
@@ChadHooverFishing The small flat ones work great to get a loop pulled up, my favorite is a small cone-shaped one, I have not replaced the one I had since I dropped it in a lake though. lol They don't damage your line either which is nice. Next video what you do when you blow it up, specially when newbies don’t know about Line memory 😂
I can do that. LOL Y'all are awesome.

Yeah, I just like something that works closer to 100% of the time. That method works, it's just more time consuming in many cases.
I have a couple dental tools that I use to get deep ones out
I have actually considered that.
I hate them so much I had one so bad that I almost threw the reel into the water
Just . send them to me..... LOL
Lol I want to keep mine I love what I got
Grab the V my dudes.
YEAP!
I prefer professional overrun
ME too. LOL
Step one get a dc reel
Grab that V take it easy there Donald trump lol
That was me Chad. I said 4 to 5 fish. Not 45. 🤭 As for girlfriends.... 67. Yessir. Grab that V. 🤣
Yessir.
