- Fish and chips are eaten all over Britain, but where did the dish come from? In this very brief history video, we look at their origin and rise as Britain's favourite food.
In the video I say that due to a law change, fish and chips was no longer wrapped in newspaper from 1968. Based on some comments, it seems that while the rules may have changed, people didn't really care, and just continued to wrap fish and chips up in newspaper!

Bless the algorithm! Thanks for the comment
Don't know how I got here but glad I did. Really enjoyed watching this, that's for the informative video 👍
Well I'm glad you did get here! Thanks for watching :)
As recently as 1982 I remember taking a carrier bag full of newspapers to the chippy on a regular basis and up to the late 1970, some shops would let me have a bag of chips in return.
Generous of them! It seems from the various comments that while technically you weren't supposed to, no one really minded and the rule was just ignored haha
@@harrywalbyoff yeah as long as there’s a single layer of plain paper and a layer of grease proof paper that was the nearest to the food item’s, the owners were allowed to use as much newspaper as insulation as they wanted. However if the grease managed to leak through the outer layers it will loosen the ink on the printing leaving whoever touched it with filthy hands.
Fish and Chip shops existed before all other fast food offerings.
cool video and extra sauce
Thank you!
The best chippy ever was Dora's in Beith. Some have come pretty close - but Dora's. Dora also had a cafe next door which made ice cream second to none.
Sounds like it would be amazing, sadly too far for me to justify driving for chips and ice cream :(
@@harrywalbyoff Sadly, Dora's has long gone but the memories live on.
I’m a Londoner, so I like a saveloy with my fish and chips, but in Wigan, they have a thing called ‘pea wet’ which is basically the juice off mushy peas
I live in a fairly rural, very small linear town in the west of England and yet at one point it had three fish and chip shops! Not to mention the four Chinese takeaways, four Indian/Bangladesh takeaways and three pizza places that we still have. And don't get me wrong they're good, especially compared to nearby towns but there's no shopping centre/park, no cinema, nor a variety of supermarkets and not a lot to do. Literally just takeaways and an unnecessary amount of hairdressers for some reason. They fill most of the shops lol. I've never really known another town like it honestly and it's been like it ever since I can remember. I suppose it's good that the local businesses are outweighing the chains but it would be nice to have a little more variety than just places to get fat 😂
Great video btw
Thank you! Yeah it's funny how even the smallest towns are completely filled with independent takeaways, yours seems to take that to the next level though!!
NW here, same story, a tiny town of about 20k, 5 chippys, 3 Indian restaurants, 3 Chinese restaurants, and a pub on every corner.
Until about 25 years ago, now it's dead place.
In my town there's a Chinese/chippie, weird but the chippie is amazing, not tried the Chinese yet but seriously the chippie is banging 👌
I've seen a few chip shop/Chinese places around the country, usually chip shop by day and Chinese takeaway by night. Not sure why...
chicken tikka masala is Britians favourite meal
dont forget gravy with your sauce list!!!
Pretty sure newspaper was allowed after 1968, I was born in 77 and can remember newspaper round my fish and chips.
Had to base this on what I read since I was born in 99! But seems like even though not technically allowed, no one really minded
@@harrywalbyoff it was actually brought into law in the 1990 food safety act, Before that there was absolutely no legislation against using newspaper
You've got to have chicken salt on your chips, it will change you're life forever. (Its an Aussie thing tho)😉
Never heard of it but I'll keep an eye out, maybe I'll ask some Aussie friends about it
@@harrywalbyoff "Chicken salt is an immensely popular seasoning in its native Australia, where the Mitani family introduced the product in 1979. Its ingredient list might surprise you: Mitani’s chicken salt does not contain actual chicken-rather it’s a garlicky seasoning originally intended for rotisserie chickens." - Americas test kitchen
@@harrywalbyoff Ocean Foods in Sydney use it, and they're considered one of the best chippies there, and not just by me.
Big thanks to @Phiziks - I'd forgotten all about it and have ordered some.
curries have tool oveer
2000 more Indian takeaways than Chip shops according to a quick Google, wow!
