Hands down the ubp 9000 is better than Sony's 1100es 4k player. Both in build quality, hdr optimizer presets, Dolby Vision auto playback and PQ DV playback, as well as on board amp to use with XLR inputs for powered speakers and PA speakers. It's relatively expensive and can be found for less than the $1000 retail price but when you have one you are pretty much set for 4K viewing all around.
I have both the OPPO 103D and the Panasonic UB9000 for about the last month. I use the UB9000 most of the time. The OPPO is region free, which is great for us, as we have a lot of British Disks. I realize the 103D is not 4k, only Blu Ray. I will be keeping both.

Great Video as always.Have been using the XBox one X for the last 6 months and have lost patience with their lack of Dolby Vision disc support.Have the UB820 on the way now based on your review which should arrive any day now.Cant wait to get my hands on it.
I am a big fan of Panasonic products but the engineers of this product have made some major omissions Was going to get this but glad I didn't and went for The Cambridge CXUHD and love this machine even though it doesn't have analog outputs because I wanted a complete digital transport.
Do u think, its worth the extra money compared to 820 for some one only using it for movies? and on Led would you use the hdr optimizer or leave it off?
I leave the optimizer on. If you won’t be using it for music you should be fine with the 820. If you have a high end setup then you maybe tempted to go toward the 9000. You can’t go wrong with either payer.
When you say this has more premier audio options then UB820 does that include better audio quality when watching a 4K movie or if you are just playing music through it? I have a NX7 projector I use this with.
Just setup my new Panasonic UB9000 on my LG OLED55C1. What an visual improvement from playing 4K Blu-rays on my PS5! Definitely worth the price! Being able to use separate HDMI audio cable to my older Stereo receiver, provided a noticeable difference in sound quality too!
It's crazy that this review is 5 years old and we still don't have a better successor. To be honest the price point is just not there, and the UB820 should have gotten a drop in price too. For the price, not having a backlit remote is also silly. Anyone using this is probably in a home theater room and not being able to see the pause sucks. Also is the USB port in the front 3.0? On the 820 it is not, and having to use the back port for larger files is a bad design choice. Nowadays everything should be USB C anyway. Time to put out a new product Panasonic. Also, how can you not include a premium HDMI cord?
Indeed but I'm pretty sure we will never get a successor sadly. The BR-business is dying it's very hard these days to make any money with blu rays let alone dedicated players. It would be amazing to get another player from Panasonic though - kinda one for the road before you can't buy any dedicated player anymore, which will probably be pretty soon. I have an UB820 and it's ok but it's a pretty loud player. I have it in a living room setup freely (not in a cabinet) and I can hear it from about 3m/10 feet away sometimes during quiet passages. That's why I always toyed with the idea to get the 9000 but I simply cannot justify paying so much to get basically the same player with the same digital PQ and AQ in a prettier chassis. I just don't trust these new bands (Reavon and Magnetar). I'm not willing to invest in such an expensive device from a company with no history and therefore/track record of long term stability and support whatsoever. Reavon is basically the same company as Zappiti (the company that made media players, which recently went bankrupt, leaving you with an expensive paperweight for a player - I had one too) so that doesn't exactly inspire confidence and Magnetar is also a very new company. The Panasonic players (especially the 9000) seem to have a history of drive failure after a few years of usage so it's even harder to justify spending a thousand bucks for it but they recently received a significant update to solve and improve the Dolby Vision playback - i's nice to see that the players still get supported to this day. I'll probably just bite the bullet and buy an UB9000 when they finally stop production and hope that it will last me a long time.
My Blu-ray player only supports one external HDD up to 4TB. Will a splitter cable (with multiple USB 3.0 ports) be enough to make the player's menu recognize two 4TB HDDs, even though the player will obviously only be able to read one of them?
This player is still a major contender for me based on: - Balanced XLR audio outputs. In 2020 I 'upgraded' my audio gear from 5.1 to 2.0 differential Emotiva pre/power amps. - Video quality and the video settings/options. - It can be modded to play all DVD/Blu-ray regions. - I can play SACDs and DVD-Audio with my existing Oppo 83. 👍 What's surprising is that there don't seem to be any new high-end 4K players coming out in 2021. Or are there? Great video player review. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
There are a couple new high end DVD players out there but are already under the gun to be discontinued for various reasons. You can't go wrong with either of the Panasonics. I own the 9000UB but it's little sister is still pretty impressive for half the price. Don't know about the Sonys or the Pioneers but those brands are solid names in all electronic devices. I have an Elite Pioneer maybe 8 years old one of the first blue ray players. It loads really slow but sound and video are excellent still.
@@RodneyAllanPoeThat is one of the name brands I was trying to think of. I also heard they were having some minor or major troubles though maybe with getting certain parts. Only rumors that I happen to come upon.
@@jeffreycarrington9098 Yes, its basically the same player without the top-notch build quality, in Australia the UB9000 costs $1,600 AUD but the UB820 is $550 AUD and the UB320 costs $198 AUD, for me, I like to purchase premium gear but I don't earn a great deal so I save for bloody ages and buy the system in parts, ie, the tv cabinet, then save more and buy the tv, save more and buy the blu-ray player then the receiver and speakers all as separate saving blocks as I can afford them. DO NOT USE CREDIT, always best to save and buy as a cash purchase, if you buy these items on credit then you end up paying much more in interest and it's not always manageable and can really get you into financial poo.
Xbox one is a gaming system first and foremost. This player is designed for film playback so picture and audio is the first priority. If you care about movies and want the best image this stand-alone player will do it for you.
@@therealshanelee sorry to bug you again brother, is this a region free player? will it enable me to Playback Region B/2 Disks? I am not sure if it does. Region 2 blu ray?
REALLY upset that a superb player like this Panasonic doesn't have zoom control, like all the Oppos do. But those Oppo dopes omitted allowing you to move and center the zoomed image on the screen. My JVC XV-NA70BK DVD player from 2004 can do that with ease. Zoom controls allow more intimate control over content and really adds to the fun. The least Panasonic should do for a player at this price is to add this feature via a firmware, but they probably wouldn't do so even if they could.
I definitely like the idea of having both HDR versions but unless you have a tv that plays both Dolby vision and HDR10+ you can only use one or the other which ever your TV supports. Not sure if there are any movies in HDR10+. I’m debating on waiting or getting it. My tv only plays Dolby vision and there might be better options. But I want to be future proof at the same time. Man by the time I get all updated to 4K stuff 8k will probably be going on to 10k or what not lol.
Q. Just purchased 85" 900h with x4500h that can be upgrade to 2.1 eARC. If am streaming do you think better hard wire wifi for lest buffering watching Amazon prime?
The problem with UB9000 is in order to use the stereo audio for CD listening, you have to disable audio thru HDMI and when watching movies you need to go back in advance setting and enable audio thru HDMI
You can pick up the hdr optimiser whilst physically watching 4k/hdr content with this player. It’s not smooth in that sense. Going from dark to bright scenes and view Versa you can see the screen dimming or getting brighter rather abruptly. And the disc tray isn’t really all that silent at all. It’s quite some louder than my older Marantz UD7007. Which also had a rubberised disc plate which prevented the disc slipping upon loading inwards. The UD7007 would detect a misplaced disc and like an automatic door, would not close but reopen. Now I’ve not tried it, but I get the feeling this player would chew you’re disc in half.
Hi - thanks so much for taking the time to put this video together. I’m hoping that you could possibly assist? I have a panasonic UB9000 on a JVC X7900 PROJECTOR. Blu-ray Disc/RUclips/ other local video apps- perfect picture. Everything EXCEPT Netflix! The colour when running the Netflix App is washed out☹️. I can adjust the projector colour/ brightness/ and contrast to improve the experience, but that ruins RUclips. I’ve connected an Apple TV and ran Netflix with excellent results. So the issue is Netflix on the panasonic player. I doubt it’s a faulty unit. My only solution is to permanently connect an Apple TV when using Netflix. Do you have any ideas.
@sparechange is there a difference in picture quality from this and an Xbox One X ? I have the Xbox as my player but I've seen this product recently, wanted to know if its worth the buy.
Now I'm totally confused! About 6 months ago I purchased the Panasonic UB820. It seems the 9000 does exactly the same thing! I still have the box should I swap it, pay the extra or keep it? Thanks...
If you plan on using it for music and have a decent system I'd go for it. If it's straight 4k Blu-ray watching you'd be fine with the 820. The 9000 does look way nicer in a rack though.
@@jeffreycarrington9098 the difference is in the sound and build quality, therefore the TV you have doesn't make any difference. Good informative video, albeit skimming over the functions a bit too quickly, not giving enough time for the average user to fully take in what you're saying. Also nothing was mentioned about the HI RES streaming capabilities of this unit and how to use it I believe it has that feature as the logo is clearly printed on the box. Or maybe not? Would be nice to see and understand how to set up..
7:50 - That's weird. On Netflix, both Atmos & Vision works but on Prime, only Vision works, not Atmos? Jack Ryan is supposed to be in Atmos & Vision. I watch it with Atmos activated on my Roku Ultra.
I just installed my UB9000Pk1 this evening, The Prime app will not output 4K HDR to my Sony A80J. 4K HDR programming is sent as SDR. I have similar issues with the Prime App on my Apple TV. Some combination of resetting the Apple TV or reinstalling the Prime App multiple times will restore HDR at least for a few days. What a pain!
Looks to me like Panasonic copied the Oppo-UDP203 as closely as they could in both looks and features for nearly twice the price now that Oppo is done...I will keep my Oppo-203 until it dies...Thanks for the video.
Quick question, I’m new to the whole home theater game and was wondering when you mentioned the difference in audio, does the include the audio for movie watch or just for music play back???
We are out of Play Blu-Ray Devices here in physical stores in Brazil. Those from the oppo brand, we don't have them here. Almost all brands with the exception of SONY and LG, however all brands that produced Play Blu-Ray devices disappear from our physical stores here in Brazil.
I owned one of those brand new. It breaks almost immediately and there is NO SUPPORT for repair from Panasonic. Local repair shops can’t fix it either because they can’t get the rare parts. It was junk three years ago, it’s junk now.
Finally a review! Thanks Shane. Now, I've had the UB820 since the end of the summer and I have experienced the same issues you mention, and some more. I perceive the player to be very slow and unresponsive compared to the Sony BDP-S7200 I had before. Not only it is slow to start up, shut down and enter the main settings etc., it frequently freezes in different ways as well. For example, if you press the eject button the player remains unresponsive for a looong time, and sometimes, I just keeps on showing "Welcome!" and then "F99" a minute or so later while also sounding wierd. Ironically, the explanation for this error message in the manual is: "The unit fails to operate properly. Press [Í/I] on the main unit for 3 seconds to switch the unit to standby, then switch back on". Nothing about what causes the error. Another issue is that I have had the sound disappear after having paused and resumed the playback of a UHD disc, not being able to bring it back without restarting the whole thing. Another issue is that the preferred language setting for subtitles rarely works (if ever), and finding the right subtitles or audio track after having started a video requires that you enter the menu which is quite bad. The default luminance setting for UHD subtitles is also far too bright and completely destroys the experience. You have to lower it to about -7 to look OK. And the damn player does not remember the setting in between viewings! Finally, I can't seem to get it to properly output Dolby Atmos. I don't have an Atmos setup, I have a 5.1 setup, but to my understanding, the Dolby Atmos signal will be decoded correctly by the receiver (Denon AVR-X2300W), which should show "Atmos". I should not have to choose another soundtrack. My receiver does show "Atmos" when playing a UHD movie through the Apple TV 4K, but not through the UB820. In short, I expected more from a player at this price point. It is slow, buggy and poorly optimized.
@@nebtheweb8885 some of it. There's no error message anymore and Atmos works fine. It's still slow, but I've gotten used to it, so there's no issue. Subtitle settings is still an issue, but on the other hand, streaming devices like the Apple TV 4K doesn't even let you set the subtitle luminance which can be an issue in certain dark HDR movies, so I still prefer the UB820.

I just bought another one for my bedroom Klipsch 7.2 system! My buddy is here right now hooking up his Oppo-205 that had been removed for better sound and playback. We we finally see which unit is better! I’ll report back after out test! Thx!
I got this player from my Mrs for Xmas and it is still in its sealed box under the tree while I'm waiting for a 5 meter HDMI cable. I have a LGB7v so I'm not worried about the Netflix issue or the streaming store the tv has it all and works beautifully. It's for movies and audio CD for my hi end hifi... love the vid keep up the work... Happy New year from the UK.
Thanks! You'll love the player. Awesome picture quality.
let me buy it
Excellent quality review, keep up the great work!.
Thanks!
Great channel! What are your thoughts if any on which is the better player between the Panasonic 9000 and the Sony 1100es?
Hands down the ubp 9000 is better than Sony's 1100es 4k player. Both in build quality, hdr optimizer presets, Dolby Vision auto playback and PQ DV playback, as well as on board amp to use with XLR inputs for powered speakers and PA speakers. It's relatively expensive and can be found for less than the $1000 retail price but when you have one you are pretty much set for 4K viewing all around.
I bought the UB-820 and its perfect for what I need and half the price
Is it working well without freezing during playback?
@@andreassouth1523 yes still no issues whatsoever, try updating your firmware
Great video. I appreciate the detailed run-through on the settings. Very helpful.
Just ordered mine looking forward to enjoy thanks for sharing this video
I have both the OPPO 103D and the Panasonic UB9000 for about the last month. I use the UB9000 most of the time. The OPPO is region free, which is great for us, as we have a lot of British Disks. I realize the 103D is not 4k, only Blu Ray. I will be keeping both.
Hello there! I know this is an older video but thought I’d try asking a question anyways. Do you recommend any specific hdmi cord or should any 2.1 hdmi do? Also should the hookup for this with a LGC1 and JBL 5.1 sound bar be pretty straight forward or is there anything I need to know. Thanks!
Any quality HDMI 2.0 cable will do. No need for HDMI 2.1 as it's not even needed.
I just received my Panasonic DP-UB9000EG1 and noticed that the main on/off button does not have any LED light, neither when it's on, nor when it's off. Is this how it must be?
All other Blu-ray players I own do have LED lights on their on/off main switch buttons, when on and/or when off.

Thank you for this video! I have a Samsung 7100 UHD TV. How do I know if my TV supports HDR10+? I don't even know what that is. Not sure if I should turn this on or off. Also not sure what HDR TV type I should select. Thank you for your help.
Great Video as always.Have been using the XBox one X for the last 6 months and have lost patience with their lack of Dolby Vision disc support.Have the UB820 on the way now based on your review which should arrive any day now.Cant wait to get my hands on it.
Very nice! How is Panasonic UB9000? Is it good as Oppo 205 player?
I am a big fan of Panasonic products but the engineers of this product have made some major omissions Was going to get this but glad I didn't and went for The Cambridge CXUHD and love this machine even though it doesn't have analog outputs because I wanted a complete digital transport.
What was the major omissions?
Do u think, its worth the extra money compared to 820 for some one only using it for movies? and on Led would you use the hdr optimizer or leave it off?
I leave the optimizer on. If you won’t be using it for music you should be fine with the 820. If you have a high end setup then you maybe tempted to go toward the 9000. You can’t go wrong with either payer.
Question: can I hook this up to my a/v receiver that does not support DV, but does support Atmos, and still get DV on my Sony OLED?
Panasonic can make some high end equipment. I still using my power amp from 1988.
When you say this has more premier audio options then UB820 does that include better audio quality when watching a 4K movie or if you are just playing music through it? I have a NX7 projector I use this with.
I wonder when this player was actually released? Wondering if they are likely to release an updated model any time soon?
Just setup my new Panasonic UB9000 on my LG OLED55C1. What an visual improvement from playing 4K Blu-rays on my PS5! Definitely worth the price!
Being able to use separate HDMI audio cable to my older Stereo receiver, provided a noticeable difference in sound quality too!
stereo receiver with hdmi input??
That stretch feature that oppo has is awesome I will be keeping my oppo
Hello from ireland , just bought this panasonic player today 16/09/2024 , has it a full screen option/ button on it
Is there a huge difference between an XBOX One S/X?
This player is still a major contender for me based on:
- Balanced XLR audio outputs.
What's surprising is that there don't seem to be any new high-end 4K players coming out in 2021.
@@Mr.HotRod Magnetar 800 and flagship 900 have just landed. Oppo clones.
@@RodneyAllanPoeThat is one of the name brands I was trying to think of. I also heard they were having some minor or major troubles though maybe with getting certain parts. Only rumors that I happen to come upon.

Maybe you can.
The Panasonic UB820 has EXACTLY the same HDR menu and it's half the price.
Google it and read some reviews.
@@MaZEEZaM Yeah I always use cash as I hate credit.
I have one of them and the oppo i think this is way better in most areas
@sparechange what advantages does this hold compared to the Xbox One X ? Thank you for your hard work and great videos. Happy New Year!!
Xbox one is a gaming system first and foremost. This player is designed for film playback so picture and audio is the first priority. If you care about movies and want the best image this stand-alone player will do it for you.
Appreciate you replying to me. Thanks so much
@@therealshanelee sorry to bug you again brother, is this a region free player? will it enable me to
Playback Region B/2 Disks? I am not sure if it does. Region 2 blu ray?
Greetings,
How do you compare the Panasonic DP-UB9000 to the Pioneer LX-500?
Man by the time I get all updated to 4K stuff 8k will probably be going on to 10k or what not lol.
does the ub9000 encode all sounds like dolby digital plus and dts like the oppo or i need a receiver ?
Running the OPPO UDP-205 so no plans to change BluRay/SACD player. Sound quality is through the roof.
Q. Just purchased 85" 900h with x4500h that can be upgrade to 2.1 eARC. If am streaming do you think better hard wire wifi for lest buffering watching Amazon prime?
Wired always.
The problem with UB9000 is in order to use the stereo audio for CD listening, you have to disable audio thru HDMI and when watching movies you need to go back in advance setting and enable audio thru HDMI
Shane - How do you change the wallpaper on the home screen and what is the best file format?
Is there any difference between this player and the 820 over HDMI?
Another great video Shane!!!
By the way is it worth the thousand dollars Shane?
Thanks for review !
Great video! Was it able to play 4K 10bit mkv files?
They both are panasonic. If I am using 1080p would I still need a 4k cable? Just got my player from Robert today.
I think the TV has to be HDMI HDCP 2.2 compliant for it to work. I'm not sure if your TV is since it's older. Otherwise you could try another cable.
I had the same issues with the little brother player 820. I sent mine back for a replacement from crutchfield.
Freezing during playback dvds and blurays?Did you get a new one?Is it ok?
@sparechange is there a difference in picture quality from this and an Xbox One X ? I have the Xbox as my player but I've seen this product recently, wanted to know if its worth the buy.
Yes there's a difference. Worth it if you have a good display.
Yes thanks for the feedback Shane.
Well I've got the LG C7 OLED.
So keep or swap now you know what TV I've got?
@@jeffreycarrington9098 the difference is in the sound and build quality, therefore the TV you have doesn't make any difference. You need to look at your sound system to see if it's quality will benefit from higher end sound chips. Or decide if the more solid build quality justifies the higher price.

I did get some paperwork with mine. But not the main manual, just a basic starter one, plus a couple other pieces. Does this player play multiple regions? My gf is from new Zealand and when she comes over with some of her discs i wanna make sure we can watch them
Thank you for the video 🙂🙂🙂
better than Pioneer 4k player?
For music

Yes
@@therealshanelee thank you. 1000 dollars is very pricey to many people.
We are out of Play Blu-Ray Devices here in physical stores in Brazil. Those from the oppo brand, we don't have them here. Almost all brands with the exception of SONY and LG, however all brands that produced Play Blu-Ray devices disappear from our physical stores here in Brazil.
Great review. I think I will stick with the UB820.
Yeah I just can't see ANY difference in picture quality with my UB820.
On the image front they are essentially identical, as their image processing components are the same.
Does this player support the ability to adjust the subtitle position, size, font, and brightness?
It does. Atleast position and brightness.
An email has been sent to Panasonic engineers to hopefully address some issues. Thanks for the feedback!
@@therealshanelee Let's hope!
@@isak6626 So, were the problems addressed?
@@nebtheweb8885 some of it. There's no error message anymore and Atmos works fine. It's still slow, but I've gotten used to it, so there's no issue. Subtitle settings is still an issue, but on the other hand, streaming devices like the Apple TV 4K doesn't even let you set the subtitle luminance which can be an issue in certain dark HDR movies, so I still prefer the UB820.

This is basically an OPPO 205 with a few differences, only one rear USB instead of two, but the drive tray looks like mine down to the logo on the front, good to know this is out there.
Can anyone tell me if the 7.1 analog outs can be used for its DAC features? My AVR doesn’t have a DAC this good so I’d like to output the ub9000 to a 7 channel amp, can do or no can do??

How is this compare to Sony x700 player? Noticeable or not really?
Nice review. Could you tell a difference in the 9000 vs 820? I have the Sony x800 and would like to upgrade if it’s a worth while investment. I probably should have bought an Oppo when they were stopping production but was worried about the long term with service and updates.
They looked the same to me. Audio is better though for 2 channel listening.
Maybe a better idea to just a a Marantz 6006 CD player to system then. Just was wondering if one unit would be as good and save some space. Thanks again
This is aimed at 2 channel playback. I think you'll be safe foregoing the Marantz unless you need SACD and DVDA.
