I was a telephone operator for 22 years, during the time this character was popular. I wore the headset, used a cordboard like this. Tour groups of kids would come through, make snorting noises. BTW, we did not listen in. No time!
They are not speaking of the regular employees, AT&T is the original CIA, which Congress never approved. Congress never approved the FBI, DARPA and many agencies of the permanent bureaucracy.
Thank you for keeping this video active. Lily Tomlin's Ernestine character was great decades ago and still brings smiles and laughter, today. Her snort always grabbed my attention and still does. 🙂 (Chase)
This skit literally has me cracking up and snorting of my own! Jeez, Ernestine was outstanding! My definite favorite character of Lily Tomlin's many wonderful creations!!!! :)
I listened to this so much as a kid. My dad has this record and luckily he introduced me to the brilliance of Lily Tomlin when I was a little one. This is but one part of one of the greatest comedy albums of all time.
As a former O operator, that is not true. First off, you would be fired immediately under their SI24, Secrecy of Communications. And you were fired permanently. And yes, they could tell if you listened in.
I'm under 30 & looked it up because I just recently discovered Lily from Grace & Frankie. I loved her so much I'm looking at her older stuff & I love this sketch too.
I think there was an add for Buick where they said that. seems so familiar! I'll bet there was.. I gotta google that now. LOL one ringy dingy... two ringy dingy... 😆😆
Oh we were so bad and listen in on our neighbor's conversations but sometimes we would get cought because we would start laughing or make a comment to what they were talking about. My friend's first job was working one of those switchboards when she was 18. Wow we were so excited to get our first push button phone it was what they called a princess phone style and it was pink.
That's a pretty small switchboard. You know we laugh about it now but I remember when Bell really did have a complete monopoly on all things telephone. Calls, hardware and all.
Thanks for the memory, I loved Lilly Tomlin doing Ernestine and also Edith Ann. When I go to Costco and start to push the buggy, I immediately think of Edith Ann in her big rocker...dwarfed by the sheer size of it.
I'm five and a half years old and that's the truth! LOL Now I'll think of that when I go there. What was so funny they other day when I was there with one of my friends when they grabbed the cart they asked me if I wanted to ride in it. OMG LMAO people give me a hard time sometimes because I'm very petite I'm not even 5 ft tall anymore yet all three of my brothers were over 6 foot tall.
@@suzannejensen275 I watched an old show on TV the other night where Joan Rivers (I think she was filling in for Johnny Carson) was interviewing Lilli as Ernestine. Going to watch 84 Brady this week and Lily is the very big reason why. Loved Earnestine & Edith Ann on Laugh In and as an elementary school teacher magic School bus and Miss frizzle were always welcome in my classroom! 😁😁😁

I remember a classmate after high school graduation being hired to work the switchboard at our local telephone company. Boy, have things changed from "party line" or sharing the line with neighbors, and listening for the right number of rings for you to pick up the receiver to answer an inbound call. Love Ernestine!
@@dlwatib They mounted them high so they wouldn't end up with some long distance calls to who knows where or making prank calls. I remember this from long ago, but forgot the crack about Corvair. They are valuable classics today and I wish I still had my '65 Turbo Corsa stashed away. But in '69 when my dad said a C or nothing, well.....I spent more time staring up at oil leaks, bowing low to a turbo that seldom worked and having friends "Hard-top-it" in the winter to escape the cabin smoke.
I knew a guy who had an old Corvair--that was back in 1970. A couple of years later I got one, and then when it died I got another! Can we say "glutton for punishment"? All three of them pumped exhaust fumes into the front seat. Also all three of them had the floor rotting out. You could look down between your (carefully placed!) feet and watch the road go by. We used to patch it up with fiberglass.
I liked her as Ernestine and Edith Ann. Used to have 2 records, 1 of each. Lily's album had her as Ernestine sitting in front of the switchboard and Edith Ann sitting in this huge rocking chair.
No one can do a better job as a telephone operator like Lily Tomlin as Ernestine. She always snorts, tongue sticks out, and playing with her cleavage kills me. She has talent as Ernestine on Rowan and Martin Laugh In Sock To Me. She's the voice of a school teacher cartoon Magic School Bus.
