Such a classic gig! Only us old timers really remember Ernestine. I will frequently answer the phone with her oft-repeated "Is this the person with whom I am speaking?" I mostly get dead air in response 😂

I save my best responses for the scammers from the Indian subcontinent. Esp. the SSA and IRS "agents." I've been so ugly to them that, while they apparently can't take me off the main call list, they HAVE put me on a "do not reply" list, as nowadays when I select the option to speak to "an agent," their system just hangs up on me. :) :) :)

In the '60's the law firm I worked for had a similar switchboard. Always wanted to say "is this the party to whom I am speaking" but didn't -- I needed the job. Plug boards were nightmares waiting to happen -- accidentally disconnect the Big Guy's call and you were instantly a former employee. Ernestine brought much-needed laughter to a thankless job.

But before I did, I interrupted her weird, screaming rant. I said "Guess what? I do impressions! And now, here's my impression of Dr. Jack Kevorkian!" and I pulled the plug. My boss almost fell off her chair from laughing.

There is an episode of the Dragnet radio show where Friday has to make a long distance call from LA to a town in Utah. We hear every step, the operator in the police building verifying he's authorized,, her calling the local long distance operator who connects with the operator in Sacramento, who connects to the operator in Salt Lake City, and then the operator in the small town calling through to the house where the person Friday wanted to talk to was.. It wasn't until I heard that that I realized why making long distance calls used to be such a big deal.

@@JeffDeWitt ... I was watching a rerun of the old TV show "Emergency" and that was in the era of changing from rotary dial to pushbutton phones. (mid 70s) Every time an actor picked up a phone you can see the hesitation for calling a number on those new-fangled things. You can also see the tension while waiting for the dial to return on a full phone number. Sometimes they had both phones side by side in a scene.

It was also put together by the same people who did Dragnet and Adam 12, so you will find cameo appearances of familiar actors. Almost every episode has a familiar face playing a bit part.
