I've noticed that audiences tend to have a much higher tolerance for character flaws that are associated with masculinity (being emotionally closed off, focusing too much on work/ambitions, thinking they know everything and always have to "lead") than they have for flaws associated with femininity (being naive, being "too emotional", too focused on romance). Its why there was so much hate for Sansa on GoT. People will love a bloodthirsty girlboss over a confused little girl.
Many critical comments I've read about Sansa and my view on her are not based on her naivete, emotions, or romantic ambitions but on how poorly she treated Jon and the Septer and how willing she was to lie, which got Arya and Nymeria in trouble and cost the butcher kid and Lady their lives. You can be naive and emotional and romantic and still be a good person (character). Sansa was simply not a good person and she was a villain even later on in the story.
@@diamond852so your dislike of her was based solely on what she was like in the first season? Wasn't she a literal child? I feel like a lot of what she did after season one boiled down to just getting by. She did what most characters failed to do which is survive by any means possible. I don't really see what she did in the later seasons that was villainous. Please do a video on the hate that the Game of Thrones fanbase had toward Sansa. I never understood it because I was always sympathetic toward her character and her circumstances.
I think it was more the way Sophie played her. Towards the end, I blame the writers... after everything she went through, she made some ridiculous mistakes and decisions...it's like she hadnt learnt anything after all
I'm confused with the comment that said Susan was hated because she was written by men. I understand that it probably happens a lot but this isn't the best example if you want to push this narrative cause Marc Cherry write all characters in the show and only Susan was hated this much.
@seeleunit2000 but in this case, Marc Cherry also write all other character and it's so well loved. Only Susan's character was bad. Then this doesn't make sense cause it's only 1/4 bad character or 1/6 if you count Katherine and Edie.
Susan is one of those character who seems to have panel "Loveable character", or ever "YOU MUST LOVE THIS CHARACTER", but they're act in fact so much like selfish brats. The're best for illustrating "Show, not (just) write".
I know that no one is going to see my comment, but I would really like The Take to do a video essay on Julie Mayer. She is incredibly complex and I think a lot of us who grew up needing to be another 'adult' in our family as children, could really speak to A LOT of us.
Susan is Carrie Bradshaw 2.0 with a parentified child and there sure are so many girls can relate to Julie. On the other hand, there are Reddits dedicated to hating Tom Scavo, 20 yrs after airing. (In my opinion he is the male Susan.)
Tom was a manchild yes. But he didn't stick his nose where it didn't belong or cause drama for anyone. Hell, the few times he was the reasonable spouse in their marriage, he tried to talk Lynette out of getting into other people's business.
Women like her are always hated, it's sheer jealousy. They think she is undeserving of all the nice things and looks she has and want to ruin her happiness. Like crabs in a bucket, they try to drag her down to their own miserable mental status. She is a threat with her authentic existence and people love to project all their insecurities on her instead of going to therapy.
I don't think anyone thinks she doesn't deserve the things she has. What annoys people so much is that she is helpless bungler that everyone has to go out of her way to help her, and this becomes a consistent theme in all eight seasons.
I was the biggest fan of the show when it premiered and I rewatched it again a couple of years ago. And let me tell you that you can tell there's a shift on how writers treat Susan's character between season one and the rest. In my first run I wasn't aware of it, but if you look the show closely, you can't deny it. My guess is that Susann was intended to be the main character (in the line of Carrie Bradshaw). However, as the time went by (and the drama unfold among the cast, as is well-known), the producers probably realize that her actress, Terry Hatcher, wasn't the ideal one to bring an all-female cast all together. Therefore, they started to give her less weigh in the show and divide it between the rest of the ladies: Lynette, Gabrielle and, above all, Brie. Her character got the jackpot then and remained the true key character of the show.
Bree was pretty much the main "Housewife" from season 2 onward i feel, and the show benefited a lot from it. She got most of the juicier storylines, she was never boring.
although i do agree a marriage could be successful on tv. i do think it should be noted that the couples examples are not from dramas all from comedies.
A "successful" marriage also is boring by TV show standards, fighting and drama is usually what keeps shows going. Not a couple doing the boring mundane everyday life thing for years on end.
I hated Susan so much when I was a teenager. Now that I am an adult although sometimes I found her character annoying, I still think she wasn't that bad compared to predator Gaby. Susan season 1 and season 8 are definitely different. I hated her as a mom and how she always wasn't the mature one, but was glad to see her support to Julie, although think it wasn't right to pressure her daughter to have that baby. Also liked her and Paul storyline, I feel like this storyline really showed her empathy for the first time. Also when she was trying to build a relationship with her father, I thought that was cute and they could have continued on that. I really wish instead of showing and shoving annoying romance storylines with Mike and other guys over and over again, they really could have done sth interesting with her character . Thinking now, I still like that she wasn't overly ambitious or super rich lady like other housewives, on that part many of us can relate, it just boils down that compared to other characters she was really boring and didn't have super controversial storylines too. As for Gaby, just because she 's played by gorgeous Eva Longoria, many ppl including me tend to ignore her flaws, but she doesn't grow much after season 5. Season 5 showed such a great character development for her and her storyline with the real daughter too. But except these parts, she remained selfish asf and not in a good way. It was ok for first few seasons, but damn it got so annoying , that by season 8 she didn't change much and was willing to almost throw her best friend to the jail and wasn't even thankful to her. Don't even get me started on John situation, can't believe that never got addressed and was always treated as a joke. She is definitely hilarious and charming and had good moments and story arcs occassionally. Season 5 Gaby was definitely my favorite, too bad it didn't last long, but it was great seeing her supporting whole family like that. I liked her storie arc with Angie, their friendship was interesting. Obviously arc with her real daughter and childhood trauma were one of the strongest arcs. Also I loved that she also started exploring her career as a personal shopper, they could have done that earlier too lol. Also damn, they really didn't give a shit about her 2nd daughter didn't they. Why they haven't done anything to her?Just my biggest disappointment that she stayed the same selfish Gaby. Like she didn't even properly acknowledged or apologized to Bree.I get it that other housewives kinda got involved in that crime, but damn it was her situation, Bree owed her nothing and still put her own life on the line, it just really showed that she wasn't a good friend after all.
It’s ironically funny that Desperate Housewives inspired Pretty Little Liars (more so from the novels) and Susan’s counterpart in PLL is Aria, who I also think became similarly disliked. Each of the Liars and Housewives had their counterparts (Spencer/Bree, Hanna/Gabby, Emily/Lynette) and with Aria’s big issue being Ezra as her BF, it’s similar to Susan and Mike, which I think in both shows their love lives were their big plots and I think it rubbed the fans the wrong way (I mean who doesn’t want to forgive your teacher/boyfriend from willingly pretending he didn’t know you were a minor when you got together and then you learn he knew your age all along, because he was using you to write a book on your missing friend, who also dated him when she was even younger). Love both shows and I don’t hate Aria nor Susan, but god they irk me a lot. I’m more of a Spencer/Bree/Lynette guy and their drama.
Bree and Spencer were my favorites from both shows so i guess it does make sense. Both of them pretty much felt like the main characters of their respective shows after a while, despite Susan/Aria being intended to be the main characters in both shows's first seasons. And Lynette was my second favorite Housewife.
Random Breaking Bad comment:) Skylar wasn't disliked so much just for "whininess" as is often cited, it's because she wanted things both ways (moral superiority while also having the benefits of a drug empire). She was a hypocrite who went whichever way benefitted her most (willing to sell out her own sister and brother in law). Walt was evil, but he went full measure (bad reference but couldn't resist:) whereas Skylar was pretty spineless when you think about it.
@enriquesanchez9016 That actually doesn't invalidate it, because likely people saw those qualities in season 1(I sure did). She (in my opinion) was kinda whiney/a bit annoying the first season, and she leaned into that more as the series unfolded. BB did an amazing job of showing how characters (for better or worse) became more their true selves with time. Skylar showed signs of whininess/weakness/being an opportunist early on. I think (probably an unpopular opinion!) her sister was the opposite. She started out pretty darn annoying with a few good qualities deep down and showed who she really was as time went on (super loyal to Hank, and very strong).
I have been binge watching Desperate Housewives. What I think it is about Susan is that she went out her way to make things more complicated than it needed to be. But I do think they punished her harshly.
The other women also created and caused problems of their own making. But overtime they actually learned from their mistakes and took steps to make themselves better people. As the seasons went on, Bree was no longer this wound up matron who demanded perfection, Lynette stopped resenting her family holding her back and embraced the joys of family life, while Gabby learned that money and material possession wasn't all that mattered in the world. The other three housewives of Wisteria Lane experienced a lot of character growth and self improvement over eight seasons, while Susan didn't.
Bree was understandable and other than lying about her son hitting her friend's MIL, which she arguably redeemed when she protected Carlos the same way and paid for by losing her business and marriage, she didn't do terrible things. Gaby was horrible and I find it telling when people claim she's their favourite. Also Rachel from friends.
I think that's because the other housewives had a lot of growth and character development over the eight seasons the show was on. Susan pretty much stayed the same all throughout its run.
People don't like women to have problems they may have to deal with. That's all. Women are supposed to be supportive at all times. The writers' hated Susan. An anti-hero is more of an entertaining distraction that serves as catharsis.
Its not that having problems is what made Susan a bad character. The fact she has such flaws made her compelling. But what made her character insufferable however was the fact that she never learned to overcome her flaws and is often the cause of the dramas in her life. And she continued to be the same helpless idiot that needed other people to bail her out from seasons one.
I disagree. The whole show, by the creators admittance, was meant to be watched more tongue in cheek than if it was a serious show. So, everything about all characters (and they all have their likability and dislikability issues) are broad comedy. If watched like any other show the best characters are the older couple who move away in S1 because things were getting off, and no one even noticed they left.
I had always liked Susan and Lynette the best. Susan had so many flaws, but still, she was a sweetheart (not the right adjective, I know). She had some things that made her likable to me. I was surprised when I learned so many people hate Susan. The biggest flaw of her was how she was with Julie.
Susan is my favourite, and I have no shame in admitting it. I understand all the points against her, but I must say it really annoys me that you use words such as "misogyny", basically painting everyone who disagrees with your views as a misogynist. So anyone who dares to like Susan is now basically problematic. It's not fair to argue like that. I'm definitely a decent human being, and Susan is a character that is simply to my taste. I like all the drama surrounding her, and I find her super funny.
You know how in the first episode she brought mac and cheese to Mary Alice's wake and it was so horrible that it made Mike question how anyone could mess up such a simple dish. To me, it would have been fitting if during Mike funeral, she served mac and cheese but this time it was delicious and everyone complimented her on it. At least that would have shown us some growth on her part since she met Mike.
I couldn't stand the way she pressured Julie into keeping her baby rather than putting it up for adoption, and she even sabotaged her attempts to adopt the baby out. Honestly, what the hell is wrong with her? Did she honestly think that just because she had it relatively easy as a single mother, that the same would happen for Julie?
I feel there was a huge divide between Bree, Gabrielle/ Lynette, Susan. They all did awful things and were flawed, but I never felt like I was supposed to see Bree or Gabrielle as right or justified in all there actions. The show seemed willing to admit Bree was neurotic and intolerant while Gabrielle was spoiled and insensitive. Which made them much more enjoyable to watch. It felt like when Lynette or Susan did horrible things, we were supposed to relate to them and see how their actions were justified.
It is called Desperate housewives. And I think every woman on that show is desperate and pathetic in their own way. Susan’s lack of growth was boring but I blame writers for that, she had potential at the beginning.
I agree. The writers could have made her a strong and independent woman who is able to stand on her own two feet. But they didn't because she was so entertaining as the clown of the group.
I'm so glad to have discovered in recent years that i'm not alone in my hatred of Susan, she was one of the most irritating characters i've seen in a LONG time. Bree on the other hand was always my favorite from season 1, now THAT is an interesting and entertaining character who showed a lot of growth despite her flaws. Susan in comparison was just... bad, especially since she was supposed to be the "nice" one despite being so insanely selfish.
I said it on Reddit and I'll say it here: I think a lot of people who hate Susan, and inadvertently Teri Hatcher, just hate women. And hate women who don't hate themselves. It would have been nice had this analysis given more credit to Hatcher's portrayal of Susan, despite all the odds stacked against her. There were a lot of genuine real moments that Susan had over the course of the show that really humanize her and give a lot of credence as to why she is the way she is. But instead, this video almost just felt like you were saying "oh it's fine to hate Susan for reasons X Y and Z."
I'm sorry but i'm NOT gonna have to like a selfish, immature, self-pitying character like Susan to prove i don't hate women, get out of here with that nonsense.
In regards to Skyler White, i hated her long before she found out about the meth. I thought about it and the reason i do not like her is esentially that she steamrolled being head of the household and left walter immasculated. You very much get the sense that Walter is just wondering aimlessly in his life before he finds out he has cancer and his wife is a big contributer to this, anything fun or spontanious she crushes, shes demeaning and talks to Walt like a child and there is no intimacy left in their marriage. Walt was a very headstrong guy who fell in love with Skyler and likley got married to her before he really got to know what she was like and just stayed even after he realised who she was. Her reaction to him having cancer also demonstrates this, she treats him like a child, he doesnt get a say in anything and even went so far to humiliate him to his ex-friends who became well off on the back of his work and she didnt care to take the time to understand why he was so upset, how can you be married for that long and still not understand the root of his hatred for the ex-friends, being married means being a team and she never got the memo. Then with the whole trying to break up with Walt, she kept making stupid choices, for someone who has always been in charge the whole time and always knows best she really f*cked up with her choices around this. And lets be clear, we are not really provided much insight into her feelings of their life, but from what we do see shes super content with everything, so theres no underlying reason or backstory to refer to as to why she behaved that way only that she really is a psycho when shes not in control of everything and in a position to actively judge others. Skyler is a sh*t person and i will stand by that and i have valid reasons to feel that way and the fact that they they claim its misogyny is wild.
you are not making me like Susan, on the first episode the set a house on fire (an accident, alright) and was distresed but sported a huge smile when she found out the guy she sent to the hospital wasn't Mike. Sure, one thing is being relieved but she didn't seem concerned she send someone to the hospital. She is a horrible person and you are not convincing me otherwise.
Amen. Susan is someone who says she wants to stand on her own two feet but the few times she tries, she fails miserably, mainly because she is unmotivated and has grown too comfortable in letting others clean up her messes for her.
Also when she accidentally knocked down the candle and started the fire, she just got out of there like a kid who just broke their mother's expensive vase, not thinking that she was putting other people's lives in danger. She didn't even shout to Edie to warn her that her house was burning down. Its no wonder Edie hates her with a passion. She could have died in that fire.
It was an accident, but yes. She broke into Edie's house because she was insecure that Mike might be humping her and accidentally knocked down a candle. And while you could say that was unintentional, she just up and left when the fire clearly going out of control. She didn't even shout to Edie to get out, which if you ask me was criminal negligence.
I like Susan I liked all the Housewives but i found it sad that she had more chemistry with her cheating ex Karl than with Mike. Mike was intresting in the first season but they kind of made him bland later on but I did like all the Housewives they all brought something to the table
@@barbiquearea To be fair Carl said he and Eddie were broken up when they got together so it wasen’t cheating on Susan end. I guess both relationship have it’s wrong but yet so hot factor lol. I rooted for Carrie and Big where as I know Susan and Karl are wrong for each other but yet I enjoy seeing them lol. In other I didn’t root for them but enjoyed seeing them together. I blame that they casted them with chemistry. I did like Carl with Bree though
@@mariaskabardonis8353 Still, Susan should have known better than to get back with Carl considering that he was never able to be faithful. I agree though that the two of them had great chemistry, which might have been the reason they got married in the first place. But yeah, unlike Big and Carrie, Carl was really bad for her as proven in that "What If?" episode where Susan imagines herself gaining a lot of weight if she never divorced Carl. Apparently putting up with his affairs would have made her stress eat to cope.
@@barbiquearea I do feel Carl multiple cheating was like retcon and happend later where it seemed in the earlier season it was one affair which they could have worked out like Gaby/carlos who each had an affair or Bree/rex. I feel the writers really wanted people to not root for them
@@mariaskabardonis8353 I agree. The show Flanderized Carl by making him a serial adulterer. It became so bad that even Brie imagined he would have cheated on her in that same episode, if she had married him.

Unpopular opinion: I don’t hate Susan. The other housewives constantly did terrible things but they still were fans favorite (Gaby and Bree).
Agreed.
Bree is a WAY better human being than Susan despite her flaws and it's not even close.
Facts
Susan was a terrible mother, a terrible friend, a drama magnet and had no intention of growing past the clumsiness of a 13 year old.
Edie can be a bitch, but she was absolutely spot on about Susan.
This was why it was so satisfying when Julie finally had enough and chewed her out for being the immature and helpless mother that she is.
Susan, Lynette and Tom used to have me yelling at the tv
You know how in the first episode she brought mac and cheese to Mary Alice's wake and it was so horrible that it made Mike question how anyone could mess up such a simple dish. To me, it would have been fitting if during Mike funeral, she served mac and cheese but this time it was delicious and everyone complimented her on it. At least that would have shown us some growth on her part since she met Mike.
I couldn't stand the way she pressured Julie into keeping her baby rather than putting it up for adoption, and she even sabotaged her attempts to adopt the baby out. Honestly, what the hell is wrong with her? Did she honestly think that just because she had it relatively easy as a single mother, that the same would happen for Julie?
can we also take a moment to recognise how good Julie was
I’ve seen a lot of analysis done on female characters. Will there ever be an analysis of male characters?
I feel there was a huge divide between Bree, Gabrielle/ Lynette, Susan. They all did awful things and were flawed, but I never felt like I was supposed to see Bree or Gabrielle as right or justified in all there actions. The show seemed willing to admit Bree was neurotic and intolerant while Gabrielle was spoiled and insensitive. Which made them much more enjoyable to watch. It felt like when Lynette or Susan did horrible things, we were supposed to relate to them and see how their actions were justified.
And don't forget when she almost killed her soon to be mother in law! That made me laugh tho 😂
Also, I feel we should talk about the adultcentrist discurse among the show, basically every kid was obnoxious
Ugh I just started rewatching 💅🏼
TIL that Desperate Housewives and The Real Housewives of [Blank] are separate shows.
I feel like Bree kinda hated herself, and everyone liked her.👀
I'm sorry but i'm NOT gonna have to like a selfish, immature, self-pitying character like Susan to prove i don't hate women, get out of here with that nonsense.
@@mpazinambao2938 Bree is a way stronger character than Susan has ever been though.
This is the show they should reboot. Not the others!
you are not making me like Susan, on the first episode the set a house on fire (an accident, alright) and was distresed but sported a huge smile when she found out the guy she sent to the hospital wasn't Mike.
Wow, what are the odds? I was just starting to wonder if I was alone in my dislike for Susan
U was waiting for this. I found her endearing at first but MY GOSH she is annoying.
Can we get one on the other girls?
Rachel Green from Friends is way worse villain than Ross Geller.
You want female writing to write a female? Don't worry. You got EMILY IN PARIS
Unpopular opinion I love a unlikable characters
Desperate Housewives is my favorite show
didn't she kill someone in a house fire......? sorry if thats a spoiler but that's what i remember about her!
2:15 😂
Poor her,she should not be a bad women
this show is amazing
I LOVE Susan 🚩
Actually I think the main problem was Tery Hatcher... nobody likes her, she seems to be insufferable in real life
LMFAO, the fact that the vanity fairs drama told otherwise says a lot about how much less you knew about the drama😭
I like Susan I liked all the Housewives but i found it sad that she had more chemistry with her cheating ex Karl than with Mike. Mike was intresting in the first season but they kind of made him bland later on but I did like all the Housewives they all brought something to the table
Susan and Karl reminded me of Carrie and Big's relationship. Interestingly, she would later cheat with Karl when he and Edie were in a relationship.
@@barbiquearea I do feel Carl multiple cheating was like retcon and happend later where it seemed in the earlier
season it was one affair which they could have worked out like Gaby/carlos who each had an affair or Bree/rex. I feel the writers really wanted people to not root for them
@@mariaskabardonis8353 I agree. The show Flanderized Carl by making him a serial adulterer. It became so bad that even Brie imagined he would have cheated on her in that same episode, if she had married him.
I just rewatched OITNB... And ohh did i forget how much I hate Piper 😂😂😂
I noticed she was a woman (badly) written by a man from episode 1 lol
Lois
