- Classic Game Room HD reviews the first GRAN TURISMO game released for the Playstation in 1998! This is the 1st Gran Turismo and the one that started it all, created by Polyphony Digital for the Sony PS1 back in the day. A combination of a racing simulator and arcade style driving game, Gran Turismo had car licenses from Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Aston Martin, TVR and many others. Buy cars, modify them with mufflers, computer chips and new transmissions, drive in a variety of cool races on well designed tracks like Deep Forest, Trial Mountain and Grand Valley. GT1 was revolutionary and exciting, fun and addictive. Although Sony and Polyphony outdid themselves on the PSone with Gran Turismo 2, GT1 remains a true classic worthy of playing once more. They don't look real, but they do look better than the sterile realism of the current GTs. The PS1 games also had something the later ones don't: a sense of speed.

Amazing fact:The game required five years to complete. During an interview with Kazunori Yamauchi, it was revealed that development of Gran Turismo started in the second half of 1992. Yamauchi added that at different times there were only seven to fifteen people assisting him. When asked how difficult it was to create Gran Turismo, Yamauchi remarked: "It took five years. In those five years, we could not see the end. I would wake up at work, go to sleep at work. It was getting cold, so I knew it must be winter. I estimate I was home only four days a year."[9]

Nobody had ever made a game anything like this before and it showed. The number of cars, tuning options, car shopping simulation, license tests, replay cameras and sheer number of races was just massive a game for the time.

This game's reward system was perfect. I LOVED struggling to win and then beefing the car up until I was destroying everyone, then a few races later you got the same excitement as it took more and more to beat your opponents.

Yes. The reward systems in Forza Motorsport 8 and GT7 are nowhere near even Gran Turismo 1998!

I always liked GT1 the most out of all the games in the series. Nostalgia has a bit to do with that, lol.
+JRRacing64 GT1 and GT3 are my favourites. Played GT4 a little, any and all GT games on the PS3 aside from the classics that may have been ported over (not sure if they have), yeah no.
+JRRacing64 It's not even nostalgia. I remember not liking Gran Turismo 2 or 3 as much back then. The series has lost a lot of its sense of speed, and therein its fun.
+Mellonxcollie, if you change the camera "width" in options, you can make it feel fast. I agree with everything else you said though.
I can't remember if it was 2 or 3 but was the first GT that was going to have formula 1 cars and they scraped the idea and the coding for those cars was still in the game. With the gameshark you were able to manipulate your cars and put F1 chassis with F1 grip on your standard cars. Was freaking amazing.

I remember playing this with my buddies a LOT taking turns on the controller after/during endurance reaces, taking long pauses to decide which car or uprgrade to buy, and toking all the time :) Such joy and fun, still the best driving simulator for me! Also, i was the best "driver" amongst them, so i had to do the licenses for everyone (made most of them at the first try, so i saved a lot of time for everyone).

I remember that when I first played GT 2, I was a little disappointed because I thought that its graphics were actually inferior to GT 1. Did anybody else had that same impression, or was it only me?

This was one of the games that I would play with my father when I was a kid.
He passed away last year from cancer and watching this video makes me so nostalgic. Not only did it change my view on racing games, but it also left me with warm memories of my father.

I still have my original memory card for this game when it came out, my first PS1 still works perfectly, and my game is in perfect condition, even my case still has both booklets in near mint condition! This is my life right here. I STILL play it.

Not the first one, but I still play the second one like crazy. I think it holds up very well even today.
This was my first racing game ever. The beginning of pure awesomeness and a fantastic, loving relationship to cars in general.
I remember thinking this was so realistic with the car reflections and the replays. Ever since then the Toyota Supra Castrol GT; It was love at first sight. Still is one of my favorite cars of all time.

The physics engine in the replays still looks great today. In 1998 it was from another universe versus previous arcade games like Ridge Racer, which was still fantastic to play.
2023, GRAN TURISMO 1 is now 25 years old.... Time really flies.
Same here I got GT when it came out, and I was just getting really into cars right before it came out, so it was a freaking magical time for me

Christmas of 1998 I received a Playstation Dual Shock with an extra controller and Gran Turismo. Probably will be remembered as the best christmas the rest of my life. The year after that, getting GT2, was a close second I will say. Played the hell out of the first two and then once Forza debuted in 2005, I never looked back and enjoyed many hours of Forza 1, 2 and 3. The satisfaction of piloting the racecars in Forza 3 with ALL the assists turned completely off and the full manual gearbox is something to be experienced.

The Intro & all the soundtracks just hit me with nostalgia. I mean, I get goosebumps from this game. Wow.
Fantastic game. I remember as a kid finally mastering the International-A license on a Saturday morning which I had previously thought was impossible and opening up the rest of the game.

I fell in love with this game the day my mate brought this game over to my yard back in 1997. Even now watching this video of a classic game, the menu does not seem out of place in shape or form.
Back in 1997, this game was awesome. Nothing else came close on the PS1. It still has its unique charm now.

They can be found in the North American version's code (and are unlockable via a GameShark cheat device). In addition to the hidden del Sols, there is also a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette and a 1998 Mazda Roadster exclusive to the Arcade mode. The Corvette and Roadster can also be accessed via GameShark.

just dug this out in response to a challenge from a friend... I gotta start from scratch and build a car to race his when he comes round. I used to always use GTO but am seeing what I can do with a Supra this time. Mark is right - the menu music is awesome.
Arcade Mode and Simulation Mode (Gran Turismo Mode in PAL and Japanese versions). In the arcade mode, the player can freely choose the courses and vehicles they wish to use. Winning races unlocks additional cars and courses.
I remember when I was 3 in 1999, my bro would play this game. I loved the game sooo much I would ask him if he could play it. Haha. Man I remember Tombraider, this, and Gex, Spiral the Dragon...grew out of video games, but this takes me back haha

The game that has gotten more replay time from me than anything else. So many great memories taking my garage of cars (memory card) to a friends house to race. It was such a fun game with fantastic music. I owned GT2 but did not like it as much for some reason.

The license test turning the circle with the impreza I think is the only higher level test I managed to easily get gold on and could reproduce it consistently. All the other ones around that level I would either be bronze or barely able to get silver.

I remember my friends, and I, used to spend whole weekends, sleeping over at each others places, playing this game. It was so cool ! I'ts the first time in like 10-12 years i have seen this game. It brings memories. Especially the menues, and the menu sound. So awesome !!

Same as me, I was introduced to it in 1999. My friend kept bugging me to play it but I didn't want to. I played on the High Speed Ring in an R33 and fell in love instantly.

GT was the racing game that really started it all. Adding parts, setting up spring rates, etc, license tests, replays to take a breath and enjoy your success/failures. The Nissan R34, was it?, was a beast.
Best game to play vs a friend until GT2 or Test Drive Hot Pursuit.
The replays blew us away.
For fun, see how fast you can win the toughest series...buy one car, I chose the Supra, and smartly do as few races/series as possible. Awesome game.
