diehard sisters of mercy fan, as such I came away deeply impressed, this singer taught my to relook at something canonical and fall in love with it anew
Have totally admired since I discovered you on Daryl Hall's channel. Even Daryl had great things to say about your musical skills. Keep up the awesome music Diane!! (AND ignore all these negative people who don't appreciate your talents. They probably couldn't sing themselves anyway. I've got one thing to say to them, "No one forced to to watch, if you have nothing good to say, keep your trap shut")
Also: the Sisters did lots of covers of stuff that people didn't consider right or accurate for their style of music. They covered Leonard Cohen, Hot Chocolate, Gary Glitter, Kylie Minogue... I guess it kind of works both ways: they do 'gothic' or rock version of something and someone covers them in a totally not gothic style. And it's OK.
@Dani - Fuck "goth". It's a song, and one I've seen the Sisters perform numerous times. But that doesn't detract from this version, or mean that there aren't even better "country" versions: ruclips.net/video/uWdvXBa_o5s/видео.html
Heard this version just yesterday for the first time while clothes shopping, on the store's music track. Just had to find out who this was! Love the version, love her voice. Her voice reminds me somewhat of Stevie Nicks (whom I also love). Thanks for posting this so I could find it!
I loved her with the long hair, but she totally rocks the shorter look. And this song - looked up the original, found it not quite my cup of tea; but the sparse rhythm-driven band and her voice (and the backup singers) made it one of my new favorites.
@@pateris The "mainstream" is always behind on things like this, but my point is that there are LOTS of individuals who knew the tune. It's considered a classic by most Goth & New Wave fans...it's not as obscure of a tune as many would think.
Definition of irony: arranging song lyrics written out of pure spite into exactly the kind of thing it was written in mockery of. Whether or not it was intentional is irrelevant. It's valid either way.
Diane Birch is the real thing. I'm so sick of the formula singers with made up 'street cred' or the bands formed from cattle call auditions. Talent like hers is rare in any time, but now more than ever with all the crap that's being pushed as "talent".. Thank you Diane! (Yeah, I'm late getting here.. :) )
Hey Scott, I'm with you!! I'm a child of the 80's and went out to as honest-to-goodness real record store to look for this on vinyl way back in late 80's after hearing it on radio. Man, it was such a sad day when that record store closed. I also had Gene Loves Jezebel and the Cure, among so many others, on vinyl. Loved the artwork!! As for this song, Diane renders a totally diff vibe from the original's somewhat dark&somber ambience. I'll forgive her, though, bec I've been following her work and see she's a true artist (and a darn good & humorous one, at that).
@@JohnDoe-pi8ky I was born in 82, so I saw the original video around 97 or so. This version of the song is so unusual, and Birch's audience obviously so different, that I wonder how many of them are aware of the original recording.
This was so jolly fine that I had to post this to my Facebook profile. This version actually makes a whole lot more sense than the original which is far too long and drawn out.
It took me more than one listen to get my head around this but, when I managed to, I got to thinking that the bones of the are still strong and the kooky arrangement can hang on it no prob.
It's a cute-sy version and I like Diane but it definitely lacks the intensity and power of the original. 80's goth doesn't really translate to country / pop very well. But I have to give her props for the attempt.
Dear Haters; You know it's possible to appreciate an elder punk/postpunk/alt/goth/whatever band without turning into a stodgy close minded old man about? Even appropriate.
I'm 55 and never heard of the Sisters of Mercy or heard it before. A buncha piss asses are whining about it in the comments. I think she kicks ass here. This is a great song. I love her voice. She's super talented, cool, gorgeous, and everything else that's good. If it's good, then she's it. I love her.❤ I even named one of my pet quail after her.😅🥰😍

meh, silly purist are why the goth scene died, and I say good riddance to you overly serious trolls. Great cover that shows deep respect for the original and introduces the music of SoM to an audience they'd never reach.
I'm far from a goth scene purist, but I agree with you. Except on the point that it introduced the music of SoM to a new audience, since the musical composition of this cover is gone. Some of the rhythm is still there, but the melody changed, the actual musical score is gone, just the lyrics and some semblance of the chorus melody remain. I enjoy covers alot, but one is hard pressed to find much of SoM left in this one.
This almost 50 year old punk who worked a few SOM concerts 30 or so years ago likes it...betcha don't like Apocalypica either...or Die Krupps since both groups have done covers of songs in a different style...
12/2024....Hope this fine woman is still rocking, in 2024. My Birthday is tomorrow, 12/21/24, I'm turning 71. And I still love this tune!

Ladies and Gentlemen this is the great Diane Birch!
2022,.......always remembered this tune,...way back when. Still a great one. Yay!
This goes hard. I'm shocked there's not more SOM covers on YT.

But considering this song was the ultimate Goth song... she made it into a damned COUNRY SONG!!
BLASPHEMY!!
Country? What drugs are you on dude? This is lounge disco!
How can Leonard Cohen not be correct for the Sisters of Mercy's style of music when their name 'Sisters of Mercy' is taken from a Leonard Cohen song?

Voice of an angel
This is growing on me. I just cant believe someone did SOM on the Tonight Show.
This lady is pure talent!
So good.
Have Sisters of Mercy on my soul! This does not suck at all....
This is what a good cover version is all about. Brilliant.
Supercool !!
Never thought I'd live to see the Sisters covered on a MSM show. Wow!

Judging from the comments, most of them.
Anything that Diane sings is great ! Saying that this not her best !
Its pointless to make a cover that sounds like the original. Making your own interpretation is what its all about.
I think this one is pretty good. You're loyal to the original, so no matter how differently she sings it, it will never be good enough.
Even better than the version on the EP!
no dude
Nice singing.. I like people to pay homage to my bands and nothing is really sacred.

Killer version, very sultry.
No, I mean Sultry.
Bet Spiggy Loves this one..I like it in a sick perverse way.Well she's prettier than Eldritch anyway. ; )

Goth with a Motown sensibility, it works in a very strange way.

Haha 🤘🏻 total agree from The Netherlands
