“Slot into the main game seamlessly.” SMB3: Extended E-Reader edition. Get on it, rom hackers

This. But hopefully also if the game ever gets another remake, they just throw all these levels into the world as well. It's part of the games history.

There is a GBA rom that was ripped from the Wii U's Virtual Console files that contains the E-Reader levels patched in. They were patched in as a bonus for the Virtual Console re-release. I found it with a Google search.

Great video! A good summary of all the e-reader levels. 2D Mario games are some of my favourites. This was the first version of SMB3 I played, back in 2004. I got stuck on the fortress in world 8 and didn't beat it until I got Internet a few years later. I'm in Europe, where the e-reader didn't exist, so all e-reader stuff in the game was disabled. As a result I didn't even know these levels existed. I first played them in 2014 on a GBA flash cart. I had to add digitised cards to a SMA4 ROM using a special tool. No Time To Dawdle was never publicly released and only made available by taking your game to a store during promotional events to have it scanned in, so its data wasn't even dumped at the time. instead I scanned in a pixel perfect remake called Mad Dash. I also needed two ROMs, as the original version of SMA4 can only save 32 levels.
I recently completed my collection of 43 American/Australian SMA4 e-reader cards and every Japanese card except for No Time To Dawdle (called Break Through With B-dash in Japan), so 105/106 cards. I also got a Japanese cartridge with Break Through With B-dash already scanned in. There are also other very interesting cards. There are ones that give you powerups. These are the standard ones in the game, but there is also the cape feather from SMW and the boomerang, which you may have noticed in some levels in world e. These can be used even in the original levels.
There are also seven switch cards. One replaces 1up mushrooms with 3up moons, one gives Luigi unique physics (on permanently in world e), one turns enemies defeated by fireballs into coins like SMW, one places SMB2 vegetables in the original levels, one causes the first 50 seconds of world e levels to run slower along with the music, one halves the p-meter in world e and the last causes some enemies to be replaced by harder ones (goombas by spinies, koopas by buzzy beetles and piranha plants by fire piranha plants), the damage system to revert to that of the Famicom version (so you go down to regular Mario when hit no matter the powerup) and bosses to have double health, in exchange for all points to be doubled. These really change how the game plays and are a great way to play it.
The last type of card are demo cards, which show you tricks you can perform, many I had no idea of before.
An interesting things about Bowser's Last Stand is that the three doors are themed in the same way as the hand levels in the original game. Also, if you want all the A coins you must reach a different Boswer fight high above with a much more difficult layout. The last A coin is in the boss room too, so you have to beat him there.
Regarding the physics, I have played the Famicom version, the All Stars version and SMA4 many times and I've never noticed any difference personally. But then I've heard a few people say that there's a difference between the original and All Stars versions so who knows. My go-to version is the Famicom version due to its more difficult damage system, though I also play through SMA4 with the red switch card (hard mode and double points) activated sometimes.
Personally I'd recommend beating the original levels in SMA4 at least once, as it's the only version that allows level select after beating the game. The All Stars version has world select but not level select, and the Famicom and NES versions don't have either (not that it would matter anyway since they don't save).

Yeah after playing these levels it’s certainly piqued my interest in trying the gba versions of all the Mario games as they seem to have enough differences to be worth checking out. The shock value of “Just what I needed” alone was worth it. I’m sure there’s others.

@@tildeshambles That's one reason I'm glad I grew up with these versions. I actually don't mind the voices when so many others hate them. They're used the most in SMA1. There are patches to remove them if you prefer. All of the games have something extra or different. SMB Deluxe on GBC, SMA4 and Mario 64 DS have the most extras, though the screen crunch in SMB Deluxe takes getting used to and the 3DS circle pad patch for Mario 64 DS is highly recommended.

same. I'd heard about them for such a long time, and it took the Wii-U eshop shutting down for me to finally pull the trigger and own them legit XD

I vaguely knew there were some e-reader stages for this game, but never knew how unique and how many there were! I'll have to try and get this running. Thanks for the video!

Yeah it’s worth checking out for sure, I too was surprised at how unique the stages were. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for making this. It's always fun to remember what early 2000s DLC was like.

I never realized how many there were

      @tildeshambles  10 месяцев назад +1

Yeah there's a surprising amount of them and they're all pretty unique. The only ones that there is a bit of repetitiveness is the airships, but even then they're decent enough stages.

It’s so weird because when I was younger we only knew because of a monthly magazine. But it’s so cool to learn out on what I missed!

I had no idea these existed until I was talking to a friend about my favourite games of all time and they mentioned that the gba version of Mario 3 had special stages. Didn’t think that they would be as cool and different as they ended up being.

Back in the day on the GBA I beat Parabeetle challenge with both Mario and Luigi. Also there was only one shoe lebe in super Mario bros 3 and no flame bars

About that unless you live in Japan the USA version only had like HALF of the E reader levels but the GBA version of the game really only came with the E reader CARDS and NOT the actual E reader ITSELF making it back then still impossible for me to play all of the areas.
The Wii U Port of the game in the USA actually got all of the E reader lvs all 64 of them.
