What a fantastic, noble character. He seems as though his heart has abandoned all hope in favor of tragedy and despair, but, in the face of the men who follow him, he always stands strong and charges to battle without fear. Incredible. This is why I miss movies. And what an amazing performance by Benard Hill!

Bernard Hill created a Theoden that I actually preferred the book Theoden, which is saying a lot because book Theoden is my favorite character from literature apart from maybe Odysseus. Rest in peace.

I think that Theoden is loosely based on the Visigoth king Theodoric who fought with the Romans against the Huns at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains. The Visigoths had a very tense relationship with the Romans and were terrified of the Huns (who had originally driven them out of their homeland in modern Ukraine) and it was as unclear if they would answer the Roman call to arms, but they did. I believe that the elderly Theodoric was killed leading a charge at the Hunnic flank, which routed them.

no the Rohirrim have their ancestry in the Eorlingas, not the Numenorians
