We’ve got Mat in the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S and he’s lining up against a Tesla Model 3 Performance!
Now on the face of it, you might think it’ll be an easy walkover for the Tesla. But trust us, this is going to be much closer than you think. You see, the 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine in the CLA has had a Stage 1 tune, and as a result, it now puts down 490hp & 660Nm of torque!
As for the Tesla, it’s powered by two electric motors. Combined, they produce exactly the same output as the tuned CLA - 490hp & 660Nm!
So what do you think - does the Mercedes stand a chance against the instant power output from the Tesla? Well, there’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

These daily uploads are amazing 😃👏. It's still amazing that Mercedes was able to squeeze over 400bhp from a 4 cylinder turbo in both A and CLA45 forms. They kinda remind me of the old school Scoobys and EVOs :D

@@crabrangoon2493 Sooner or later everything is "modded". There is no "stock-AMG", since each AMG is a modified car. Do you think, a 2.0-AMG is so much different from a normal 2.0? ...... The enginze-size is the same, the rest is turbos and pressure. It's a difference, if you roll on 0,7 bar or 1,8 bar. Give a V8-Mercedes just bigger turbos and it has easily 100 hp more.

What AMG have squeezed from a two litre, four cylinder engine is phenomenal!
Four cylinder engines just sound naff with conventional crank though. I much prefer a cross-plain's warble 👌

Model 3 has a phenomenal grip. 11,8 on wet surface is almost the same as on dry surface. And the breaking...awesome 👌
Being able to instantly adjust the torque with electric motors means EVs can have crazy effective traction control systems. Braking is an interesting one, the AMG should really have won that so I'd guess tyres plus we've seen in previous videos that Mat's side of that runway does hold water more so is less grippy. The Tesla is undoubtedly impressive regardless of that though.

@@mortenkrogh8599 Honestly I'm not a fan of the current obsession the world seems to have with acceleration times. My current and previous cars both have 0-60 times either side of 5s and even that isn't necessary at all.
The Plaid drivetrain is impressive of course, but outside of RUclips, the long range drivetrain is a better choice almost universally and easily fast enough. At that level, other attributes of the car are far more important.

The biggest surprise was the brake test. Hopefully the next M3P will also have carbon-wrapped rotors. The need to maintain power at higher speeds to be competitive. However, very few people will ever race over 100 mph on the highway so in all realistic scenarios the Tesla will come out on top.

Matt, it would be much more interesting if you also start without race start as in normal life. Nobody starts at an traffic light with a race start. So the Model 3 in every day life is even more faster.

@@ramadhanisme7 Even here in Germany on the Autobahn the CLA is not faster. Traffic is everywhere. And till 220, means in real life, the CLA is slower. Believe me ;)
@@Maltemiata well i never been into Germany before so i can't say anything about the traffic there but yeah like I've said cla is faster at the top end speed as you can see it was catching up tesla and yeah that's mean i agree with you at the lower end speed tesla is faster due to instant torque, no turbo lag and no need to shift up but saying that tesla faster in real life traffic is not 100% absolute because in my country the rolling race in this video is happening in real life traffic here so it's still relevant with carwow rolling race

I noticed it doesn't have a softlimiter, is that an AMG thing or by the tuner? My slow 180 doesn't rev up higher than 3500rpm :(. I got a cut-out exhaust system on it though, and it sounds lovely - bet yours will sound even more amazing, might be worth doing!

Not to make the intros even longer but... would be interesting to see what tires each car is running since this is quite significant, especially in conditions like this. For example in the braking test, the AMG lost purely because of the tires. I would say Pirelli judging by the poor wet performance lol.

the 911 will be left behind with a close-ish race between the model S Plaid and the 765. The Plaid does 9.2 1/4's all day long the 765LT is about 2-3 tenths off that from what i've seen. 911 is a low 10 sec car.

@Alessandro Nesta cla is pretty much a cheaper C class coupe. If you just want the looks and dont care about space in the back theres not much point to take the CLs over the CLA especially when you consider price diff
@Alessandro Nesta The CLS is based on the E-Class tho, it is NOT an S-Class. So yes its obviously much better (built quality wise) than the CLA. Ive owned a CLA and i cant reaaaally recommend it. It looks amazing and its pretty fast as of its relatively light weight, however as nice as the Interior looks it is dirt cheap honestly. A lot of crackling plastic noises and the Soundsystem is HORRENDOUS. Looks: 10/10 Built quality: 3/10. Not even close to the level of the E-Class which im currently owning.
Due to exorbitant tax in Hong Kong the CLA 45S costs £100K here, whereas the M3P costs just £41K after tax concessions for EV. Guess which one I got?

The shit into 7th gear in the fist rolling race, was actually very good. Dual clutch transmitions have one clutch for the even and one for the odd gears, so the shift from any odd to any even gear and vice-versa can be very fast (if the correct gear is pre-selected), if you want to go from even to even or odd to odd the car has to „change“ a gear…

Both vehicles acquitted themselves very well.

Dragtimes just raced a $130K Tesla Model S plaid against the $2 Million Rimac Nevera and the Tesla beat the Rimac to 60' and was less than a second slower on the quarter mile but still a very respectable 9.272 @ 152.68 MPH vs the Nevera 8.655 @ 166.66 MPH a little over 1/2 a second. You can't even blink that fast! I love these videos. Cawwow is fun and has a lot of information plus a lot of fun banter!
Braking test in the wet is more about comparing tire models than cars.
There's a huge difference in performance between a tire that's designed for good wet weather performance over dry and the compromises the manufacturer made.
Also just the temperature in the tires makes a huge difference in itself in such a test.
it's really hard to beat the EV's on a Drag Race!:-)

okay boys...got my model 3 performance...all i can say is WTF!!! the way this thing kicks you back even at 50% throttle is just INSANE!! makes my corvette feel like a damn tonka toy car...do I miss my gurbling V8 and those exhaust pops, yes...but not enough to want to go back to it! I guess, once you own a Tesla, you always own one. I've only had the car for like 4 hours but just stunned by the performance.

I actually prefer the front end of the Tesla, it looks more slippery and modern. Prefer the rear end of the Merc. Don't care about the sound, thats just wasted energy that could have been used to go faster.

"see how much you can save?" - CLA 45s - nothing, already had a quote. And in fact £6K to £10K more than list!.
Going off the a45s these cars are going to depreciate a lot very quickly. Couple of years and you will get it almost half price.
All I really see here is the difference in which the battery deploys power compared to an engine. As the battery responds faster with more power it will always win the first stretch if not the entire launch 0-62mph. Engines deploy more of their power later on in the power curve and that pretty much explains why the AMG won the rolling race and not the drag race. Both cars are cool though! My dream is a 2022 Audi TTRS Coupe Vorsprung in Ara Blue with a 530bhp tune from ABT

@@timonxDlol Yup it's possible, Google Plaid Model S power curve. It'll be a straight line going up to around 70mph and then completely flat at 1020hp the whole way to 200mph.
@@migueljardim8177 that´s actually insane and deletes one of the things that I dislike the most about EVs so far: they just lose power the faster you get.
It would be interesting if you showed the state of charge (SoC) of the EV's. High SoC (above 80% or 90%) is quite important for at Tesla to perform at its best. This has been demonstrated several times by the youtuber Tesla Bjørn / Bjørn Nyland.
but everyone would still rather have the mercedes than the tesla 😂
a big advantage of the electric car, no warming up, no turbo damage, no engine damage....if race with a low SoC, then please also with a cold petrol engine....
Spontaneous races often occur when the engine is still cold.
@@alexanderb.9084 Cold Petrol engines dont rly perform much worse they just wear out muuuuch quicker when you force them like 7k rpm from a coldstart. Chances that youre killing your Engine are just way too high especially in performance cars.

another important point,ist the Launch Control in modern Cars: the problem with the launch control, nobody pulls off at a normal traffic light all the to time. it is only to beautify the prospectus indication 0-60 time. The model 3p has no Launch Control,when you put your foot on the pedal, you immediately have power. no turbo lag below 2000rpm-below 2000rpm the cla does not bring more torque than other cheap 2l petrol engines. the price of downsizing.3L V6 turbo is under 2000rpm much better,but thanks to weight-related Co2 classification not wanted,

Doesn't matter if the Tesla is a bit faster from start, i much prefer good engine sound and the quality feeling in the AMG.
