I own three Grand Seikos. I’ve never had any issues. I’ve owned them about 4 years and treat them like most people treat their G-Shocks. I’m a very happy customer in the US. They hold a lot of cool free collector events here.
Basically, you know somebody who bought a grand Seiko, somebody said it was serviced but the truth is it wasn’t sent back to Japan. You don’t like grand Seiko because you’ve got to send them back to Japan for any work to be done, you don’t have to do that with Rolex or omega - yes anybody who knows anything much about watches knows this. you only like Rolex or omega. There’s loads of people like that.
Thanks for the information Brendan, I was going to add a GS to my collection next but I’m concerned about that now. Might have to be an IWC instead then 🤔
I own three Grand Seiko's and they are amazing but that is my opinion I only purchase from the GS boutiques and not second hand either. I own other brands as well. Just pop into a GS boutique and take a good look and talk to the staff about your concerns.
It's not a Grand Seiko issue. It's an overseas service issue. You need to trust your AD to ship it and then you need to trust the local and the foreign postal service both ways. This is why I only buy watches that can be serviced domestically.
I've owned half a dozen GS over the past few years. None have stuck in the collection thus far. Just something about the design that leaves me wanting more. It is different for each watch, so nothing consistent across them all. I do like the spring drive movement, so maybe I have the patience to try just one more... maybe. Anyway, crazy story about the servicing experience. I would be chewing someone a new outlet hole if that were me!
My brother has an Evolution 9 spring drive piece. Purchased brand new in 2023. He had it two months and it stopped working. Sent it back to be repaired. I believe it was fixed within the U.K. just another true story about Grand Seiko’s being unreliable. It looks great, it really does but I was shocked even their high end Springdrives have issues. GS refused to disclose what the specific issue was, which speaks volumes.
How so can’t you not read? Go look at that original video, find his comment and ask him. But be respectful as you are dealing with someone who doesn’t come across as a fibber!
A sobering tale , it's surprising as you'd think anything Japanese would be reliable high tech , this will only hurt the brand. Plus, GS, plummet in value worse than omega . You have to be really committed to the brand and not mindful of resale value if it breaks or the brand loses it's cache which it may well do over a rolex and seeing as many luxury watch buyers aren't wealthy enough to write off the value arguably most would rather own a rolex so look to omega or GS for affordability then when the novelty wares off or their tastes change find it's worth less than half the value .

Think you are spot on, if buying GS buy pre-owned.
I picked up a couple of pre-owned GS last few months.
Just a cheap but amazing 9F models.
Great everyday bangers
Great value on the after market

I am a bit skeptical of the story. He should contact GS direct and let them know what had happened. See then what is the response.
