I sat at the feet (literally) of this 'greatest band that ever was' at Council Rock High School in Buck's County PA and at the Spectrum shortly after.. My life changed in an hour of creative enlightenment.. As a drummer my future was written in stone and remains so.. The venues are shut and the industry decimated such potential within ten years of this show.. These recordings and videos are to me more precious than words could convey.. Thank you for the joy and goosebumps.
I was at this concert. Beside being incredible musicians individually, this group had the most amazing interplay between them that I have ever seen. One of a kind.
As a youth they were untouchable, I love hearing these pieces with new solos, tempos, ...a wholly unpredictably wonderful incarnation of one of the greatest bands I've ever heard!
THANK YOU!! Saw this tour at Yale (Woolsey Hall) a few weeks later. Mind blowing, still gives me goose bumps. They played three encores and John came out to say "we are very sorry, Billy has cramped and we have to stop". And isn't it amazing that they start with Birds of Fire at a FASTER tempo than the recoring?!
Yeh that snare makes a good clatter, really rings out when he's playing close to the rim. those gongs at the beginning man...in a universe of their own with the way they are pitched. That gong intro emanates such profound stillness, it's downright intimidating when he kicks in with that ferocity
Well, that was astonishing. The band was presumably deep in their hating each other phase by this time, as they were to disband within a month. The ferocity of this performance feels (with the benefit of hindsight) both valedictory and angry. P S The sound quality is initially messy but improves within a few minutes.
Listening to the dance of maya, seeing where this version will take me. My plan is to listen to every version available on the internet. Counting through the middle section of the keyboard (rhodes) and the violin duel. Do any of you count through this tune? 20/8
I have nearly 100 Mahavishnu shows from 1971-75 and, at the last count, 33 versions of The Dance Of Maya. The one from Ebbets Field in Denver from April 1973 is pretty spectacular.
Sure sounds like it. " I'm in love with her and I feel Fine " Santana used to do that too back in those days on his guitar. In songs like Sambe Pa Ti and Incident at Nesabur ", he'd slip in little excerpts from " Fool on the Hill" and other non- Beatles tunes from the 60's.
Edgar, Mahavishnu was the greatest representative of jazz rock in the 70s. Eleventh House, Tony Williams Lifetime, most of the Return To Forever albums, Jean Luk Ponty, Passport, Colosseum Second.......were bands that belonged to to this current. Then, around the middle of the 70s, someone decided to call everything fusion. I always found different things. Okay, they're just labels...but in my time that's how they were known.
Like many bands with incredible talents they were at their peak the first year they toured -late'71 -mid '72. At this date, it is clear (to me, at least) that they need new material and a very different direction.
Incredible document of a band on the edge of everything: the forefront of musical ability, stylistic adventure and interpersonal animus. Thank you for posting!

Thank you too Bill for following us! It's our pleasure to make you feel happy!
Oui tout a fait d'accord..Tous les autres groupes sont des "nains de jardin"...
I was at this show. I'm so glad I caught them just before they broke up.

Glad to hear that. Thanks for listening!
It’s just a shame that the greatest instrumental band in history has been heard by so few.
As a youth they were untouchable, I love hearing these pieces with new solos, tempos, ...a wholly unpredictably wonderful incarnation of one of the greatest bands I've ever heard!
Tsunami for my mind at 14 years old !!!!!!!!!!!!! And now too !!!!!!! Amazing Rick Laird 👏👏! Deeply thxs Jazz3+ 🖐!
Great bass tone in this show, wish it was more like that on the albums!
That riff during Sister Andrea Rick plays lets Jan go wild. What a terrific version of that tune.
My God what a setlist! I almost get a new life (again? as it was when discovered them in the ’70s). Goosebumps, tears, you name it. ❤❤❤❤❤

I saw this group in the early 70's at the Santa Monica Civic and was just blown away by Billy Cobhams drumming. Total fluidity!
Amazing that this exists...sat in the back row in the balcony, completely unprepared...truly great show
ฺBiily Cobham is the man!

Nice descriptive words. What's popular today sounds like regurgitated garbage in comparison.
Wow, the tempo of “Birds of Fire” is the fastest I’ve heard to date. Sounds like fire volcano full of birds!!!!
Yes !! I looked at he setting speed !!! 🤣
I always felt this band became a showcase for Jan Hammer.
greatest man to ever wield a pitch shifter
It sure was !
Cobham’s bass drum sounds like solid heads on both sides. Just like Simon Phillips later. The snare is really tight and snappy

It was their last gig, no?
@@Riddim4 I didn't know that, but it makes sense. Fantastic to have this event on tape.
I saw them around this time and If they were angry, I couldn't tell. They were very serious and gifted musicians; that's all I saw.
@@Riddim4 They played one more gig after the two nights at Avery Fisher.

@@markrobinson6129 I will make sure to find it and listen. Thanks.
Incredible tune that's captivated me since my teen years when it came out.
The good jazz rock of the 70s. Magic concert. Thank you.

3 days before this original lineup broke up.
At 1:12:35 is that a Beatles reference?

Thank you! A superb group with excellent songs...fusion at its finest!

This dream version is awe-inspiring, at least as good as the one released on the August 73 LP, maybe better.......
I was fortunate enough to be at this spectacular concert
Very cool!
I was there as well it was absolutely amazing
I also saw them at the Central Park Show “Between Nothingness and Eternity” I was in the 7th row center right it was crazy great
Beholders of this event getting together little by little 👏
@@charlesbrannum445 i was there. in the last row of the orchestra. Two nights ending this legendary bands existence. What a great performance 👏🏾
Oh damn , THIS is the show. Rick Laird clear in the mix.
Huge band sound! My God 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Cze!!! świetne, super!! Chciał bym to doświadczyć na żywo 😉👌✌️☮️🇵🇱👋👍/pozdrawiam.
Cheers!
And.... what a duel/duet of guitar and drums. One of the best I've heard. Thanks for the great post.
I could b wrong but I always thought that jan got alot of his phrasing from JohnnyMac....
And visa versa. I think both influenced each other's phrasing.
No doubt. I'm guessing the JM was doing that phrasing 1st, but I've never heard JH before the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Great show. Why the distracting cheesy shaky scratched film projection effect?
Great sound quality . Thank you
Great to hear this! The band at its peak?
Like many bands with incredible talents they were at their peak the first year they toured -late'71 -mid '72. At this date, it is clear (to me, at least) that they need new material and a very different direction.
That opening birds of fire is fierce
They do seem pretty bored with the older material: changing the harmonic structures on the fly and playing them REALLY fast.
The Sound! A dream
Это самый чистый кайф!
Thanks so much.
You're always welcome!

Zlý zvuk 🔊 👎🏻
Someone commented; sound improves after a few minutes. Didn't say if it was still sub- par after the effect, lol
disco hi hat around 12:00
i never like this band ! its very boring ! mclo ? i like shakti and one album , electric dreams !
Boring? Complex time signatures. Complex oksying. Is not boring, but each to their own x
This is the 1st time I've heard it called boring. Nothing else could touch them.
