CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ahmad (Brandon Hammond) reveals that he lied about the existence of a stash of money in order to get the family together.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This hit domestic comedy-drama concerned the fortunes of an extended African-American family recalled through the eyes of young narrator Ahmad (Brandon Hammond). Ahmad's world revolves around his grandmother, Big Mama Joseph (Irma P. Hall) and her three daughters: workaholic attorney Teri (Vanessa Williams), newlywed salon owner Bird (Nia Long), and Ahmad's housewife mom, Maxine (Vivica A. Fox). Each sister is in turmoil. Teri has lost patience for her husband Miles (Michael Beach), who wants to quit the law and take up music. Bird doesn't realize that her husband Lem (Mekhi Phifer) is about to be humiliated by her ex-boyfriend (Mel Jackson). And while Maxine's relationship with her husband Kenny (Jeffrey D. Sams) is going well, her relationship with her jealous sister Teri needs fixing. These conflicts boil over at Big Mama's traditional Sunday dinners, where the matriarch plays peacemaker. The ritual faces extinction, however, when Big Mama suffers a stroke -- but Ahmad is waiting in the wings to take her place. Soul Food launched the directing career of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native George Tillman, Jr., who based the script on his own family experiences. In the summer of 2000, Soul Food was spun off into a cable TV series.

Draee Tha God amen
"But I didn't know how to do that because all ya'll do is fight!" That line always gets me, it's a damn shame that a child has to tell adults about themselves.
D Clark Isaiah 11:6 and a little child shall lead them.
Look at their faces when Ahmad said that
Yeah, and it shows that they're very superficial. If Ahmad hadn't lied about money, they never would have gotten together for a family gathering. MONEY had to bring them back together.
@@sickofguysnamedtodd2293 you are incorrect!!! That's not what that scripture means. "The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them."
As you can see right away, the text has nothing to do with a child leading adults. It states that a child shall lead the wolf, lamb, leopard, young goat, calf, lion, and fattened calf. This may seem strange if we do not continue to read a few more verses to get a better understanding of what is being discussed here. Verses 7-9 continue:
The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
This passage is a discussion of the Day of the Lord. This is the day that Christians look forward to when Jesus Christ will remove the curse of sin from our world and restore peace to all of creation. As a result of this peace, wolf, lion, lamb, cobra, calf, bear, and children will all live in harmony. A child will be able to lead a lion (or a wolf, etc.) around without fear of harm.
Let us stop using this phrase as if the Bible tells us that children will one day lead adults. It says nothing of the sort. If we are going to quote Bible verses, let us quote them in context. Isaiah 11:6-9 is a wonderful passage that describes what God has in store for this fallen world that has so much violence, fear and death. It will be a world of peace.

Ahmad was wrong for lying but if he had told them the truth about genuinely inviting them over for dinner they would have been too bitter and angry to even want to be around each other. After Big Momma died Ahmad became the rock of the family.
That was the point of them listening to him because he only lied so that they could all shut the hell up and see what was happening here and they were all turning against each other basically.

@Reginald Wilson Lead
@Reginald Wilson Nah because throughout the whole film he was narrating and helping his family come back together.
I cry every time I watch this scene he speaking real truth and the adults at the table finally got the bigger picture and it hurts that it took a strong child to show them that.
“Y’all know that’s what Big Mama wanted”🥺😭😭😭😭😭 he gave it up🤌🏾🤌🏾🫡🫡
He was so direct. He said ya'll messed up the family. That is true most of their arguments are about their ambitions, accomplishments and marital status plus their there sis nothing upbulding in the family conversations.
This scene is one of the most touching scenes. Inside of me always wants to just cry, because after 18 years, the scene has some meaning to it. I can relate to Ahmad and Teri in this movie very deeply, especially I went through the same thing with my family. I'm the eldest child of the family. A death of a loving grandparent can tear a family apart. But if the family's too toxic to fix, it's time to distant yourself and gain your peace.
Cruel and sad,… but VERY TRUE.
@@jcmat9917 facts about that 💯
Right in the feels.
Brandon Hammond (Ahmad) was part of my childhood back in the day! One of my favorite child actors back then!
Does he play in the movie surprise? But older now.

A boy trying to honor his big mamas dream is a good person in my book and I'm with him family isn't about money or greed or fighting it's about who you care about and who you hold close to your heart and family is forever no matter how big or small family will always be there to help you in your darkest hour.
This scene is so powerful on so many different levels. Yeah it wasn't cool that he lied, but I understand why he did it. His grandmother knew that he was the only 1 who could get his family back together and when he called them out and told them it was their fault, they all realized that as adults, they were setting bad examples to Ahmad, his siblings, and his future cousin.

The child the only one in that family with any sense.
Terri didn’t mess up the family. Just putting that out there. This scene is a tearjerker, but that kid is gonna grow up and realize that woman did everything she could.
I disagree because Teri is a part of the reasons why the family is messed up in the first place. Yes, she did keep it pushing financially but it doesn't excuse her behavior towards the family and for Ahmad to be exposed to her problems (ex. the anniversary party scene) and you're right about the scene being a tearjerker though.
@@E.J.Branham3Billion And what behavior is that exactly? Calling them out for always needing money from her like she's an ATM? I'll do that too. Are you serious with the anniversary partty thing? She didn't plan that. She was keeping her distance until it reached a boiling point. And guess what led to it? Max saying that Terri will pay for Big Mama's hospital bills, and they'll pay her back. They didn't even ask her. She was fed up.
@@angie2452 yes, I'm very serious about the anniversary party situation and the fact she did all of that stuff on that joyous occasion knowing Ahmad was gonna be there as well, she pretty much exposed her own frustration not only to Ahmad but to the family. Yes, as I said, she kept the family pushing financially, yes, I give her that, but for starters on the other hand, the whole thing popped off with her and Maxine going at it when Big Mama just went to a coma, then on to pushing Miles away to having Cousin Blimp jump Lem believing he beat Bird when he didn't led to his arrest to that point of where she saw the error in her part in that.
Looking back on this scene now I’m saddened by the fact that things were so bad in the family Ahmad had to lie about some money, that may or may not have existed, to get everybody together. Things were that broken.
To be fair, the problems were brewing and Mama Jo kinda overlooked some things...
I liked Ahmad's character but at the same time I think he was way too involved in grown people's business.
Nicollette Richmond Take a chill pill lol
Why are you telling me that? All I did was stated an opinion & I wasn't being over the top.
Allen Greene You are right about that. Well except for Bird, she was the only 1 who never really tried to start any problems with anyone.
He had an old soul
Ahmad was more mature than his whole family combined. Plus Big Mama left him to do a job. He wanted to fulfill her dying wish. It's not that he was involved in grown people business but he was always around seeing everything. It's not like he had cousins his age to hangout with or anything. It effected him and needed to do something about it.
I felt every part of what Ahmad said cause all they ever do was fight and who could blame him but in the end there was money after all.
Man, he had me in tears with his scene. He was very close to his grandma, just like I'm close to mine!
This was my favorite scene of the movie, I felt his speech on so many levels, brings me to tears every time I see it
