- Here I am playing along with Mike Barson & Suggs`s performance of "My Girl" ballad version in 2017. Straight after (2:47) I play a solo version of the whole song. Because Mike isn`t playing to a drum beat, his tempo sometimes changes ever so slightly, (you wouldn`t notice unless you try to play along with this), & this made it hard for me to play along with, as I had to really try to follow Mike`s piano. I also had to match the little bit where Mike almost makes a mistake in the piano solo.
Enjoy !!
I used my Pianoteq preset 27.7.17. MY GIRL BALLAD(14.4.17.solonw5)
MY SOLO VERSION STARTS AT 2:48
This is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard.
Thank you, It is a beautiful composition.
Excellent stuff. Well played. Wish I had the patience to learn. 😎
Another great version & a great start to the morning!
And another great comment from you guys, thank you very much :o)
Spot on as usual matey, was singing along to your solo version!!
Hi Dave, thanks very much mate.
I would love to hear you singing along with it.
Beautiful!
So nice! Just lovely and wonderful!
Thank you.
Brilliant as always!
Thank you very much.
Hi Lee.. Scott here. Fabulous accuracy as ever by yourself.
You'll be pleased to know I've bought myself a lovely new electronic piano and a new keyboard yesterday. A huge step up from my shoddy one from 2011/12!!
They are a delight to play and I cant wait to get back into learning some songs, i will start by uploading proper covers of IMBL and Swan Lake first.
Hope youre well!
Hi Scott, many thanks for your comments as always. I`m not too bad thank you. Hope you are well mate.
I think that is fantastic news regarding your new musical instruments.
Can I ask what ones they are?
But yeah better quality instruments really are a delight to play. It`s good you started with a cheaper keyboard as it now really makes you appreciate the dearer ones you`ve just bought, as you can no doubt feel & hear the differences.
As i`ve said to you before, you really should keep at your playing as you definately have a gift for it.
I can tell from seeing the way you`ve played Swan Lake & It Must Be Love.
I shall look forward to seeing some videos from you in the near future mate :o)
Hi Lee, i've seen from your videos that you have many keyboards ect... & was wandering what your thoughts are about the Hammond sk1 as to it getting Barso's piano voices up? Also the Vox & obviously the B3 voices? Don't know much about technicalities of keyboards, but want something gives me more options than what i've got at the moment. From what i've seen of your Sk2, i'm hoping it will. Also, how much does an Sk1 cost new? Thanks Lee, your videos have taught me so much, they've been invalauble!
well covered Lee, hope you are well mate. keep the tunes coming.
Great to hear from you Glenn.
I hope you, Mandi & the kids are well mate.
Don`t worry I shall keep the tunes coming.
Please give my regards to the rest of the crew down there, Mick, Cardy , Marcus etc.
Cheers mate :o)
no problem Lee, take care.
Thanks Glenn, & you.
Fab as ever Lee.
Thank you.
Fantastic!
Hi Emma.
Thank you very much :o)
Lovely Lee! Love your instrumental 2nd half, seen them do a version like this in a 1981 gig on RUclips, and often wonder if they got the idea from Tracy ulmans my guy which is similar.
Thank you Mike.
I was hoping people would enjoy me doing a full solo version too.
Madness first did it this way (ballad version) in 1981 & Tracey Ullman`s version didn`t come along until 1984.
She was on Stiff Records too, so probably all Dave Robinson`s idea for her to cover it, & her version had Bedders on bass too.
I`m betting it was Barzo`s idea to do it with the slow start (ballad) back in 1981 :o)
Brilliant mate. The first bit of singing I thought it was you.
Thank you Sara.
That`s Suggsy singing. I can`t sing at all :o)
SARA TOWNSEND I bet you can!
Can you sing Sara?
Beautiful
muy bueno seguí así
Muchas gracias
Awesome...Bravo
Thank you
Brilliant as always Lee, Where was this version performed in 2017 ? please
Hi and thank you Declan.
This version was performed by Mike & Suggs on an Australian radio show earlier this year.
Bloody hell Lee, I recorded this show over here and put it up on the web and yet i didn't recognise it, Typical of me :)
Ha ha, well thank you very much for recording it & sharing it Declan.
I hope you didn`t mind me using it?
Not at all Lee, It's a sharing thing, It's a sharing thing :)
Thank you. Ha ha I like the Madstock 92 quote there Declan :o)
So you live out there then?, lucky fella.
If it wasn`t for you recording & sharing this radio show, I wouldn`t have made this video.
It inspired me to make a video I wasn`t planning on doing, as it was such a lovely version.
Thank you too mate for all your support in your comments to me.
Means a hell of a lot :o)
Good stuff mate, you have a gift for figuring out this stuff and tackling the challenges. Have you ever tried playing ragtime pieces? If not, I'd say that you'd have a bit of a headstart over most people approaching them as they're full of the kind of syncopation and off-beat stuff that Mike crams into his compositions and that you have natural flair for (or have worked on so much that it comes across like that!).
Brilliant comment Roman, thank you.
Yeah I love ragtime & I have `on & off` over the past few years been learning the `Maple Leaf Rag`.
Incredibly difficult at first, but I can now play it all, I just feel as if I should be able to play it a bit quicker, then i`ll put a video of it up on here, (at the risk of being torn to shreds by some?, as I am self taught).
For me it is the most wonderfully difficult piano style to play, & as you say it has a lot of similarities to Mike Barson`s stuff.
So yeah, I think you`re right, by me learning Mike`s complicated parts, they may have given me a a bit of a headstart in approaching ragtime.
But saying that, the shock I got when starting to learn `Maple Leaf Rag` was massive.
I found it so incredibly difficult, but i`ve found that with most of Mike`s stuff too, & I just have to keep on at it until I get it, as impossible as it may seem in the beginning.
Pretty much all the stuff you see me play on my videos I couldn`t play straight off.
I`ve had to spend hours & hours learning to co`ordinate my hands, & most of Mike`s parts throw something new & equally difficult at you, if you are playing them properly like he did.
Thank you for saying that it looks like I have a natural flair for it, but it`s just passion or wanting to play a piece so badly & believing I will get there, & then putting in the long hours.
Love it! Well done. Are you on any Madness Fan groups on Facebook?
Thank you very much.
No i`m not on Facebook.
Madness Keyboards Lee ... oh right, I was just thinking you might have been one of my long-term fellow madheads on one of the fan groups.
Wish I'd kept my keyboard lessons up .😯
Don`t lose heart Barry, i`m self taught & never had any lessons or anything, I just had the most incredible desire to be able to play Madness songs on the keyboard, whilst hopefully sounding a bit like Mike Barson`s playing.
You actually sound quite like Suggs.
That is Suggs you can hear singing. I can`t sing.
