Here is my full keyboard tutorial for the Madness song "Primrose Hill", from their 1982 album "Madness Presents The Rise And Fall".
As requested by Brian M. (Maybe one for my good friends Dan Fossard & Scott Lightfoot to try eh? :o). )
I used my Pianoteq "D4 Honkytonk 8.7.16. TRY PRIMROSE HILL" preset on this video.
I've always loved this very under rated song-as always a cracking tutorial..thanks for posting,Lee..
Well played! Madness wrote some amazing songs
Thank you. They certainly did, & trying to learn to play them makes you appreciate them even more.
Love this tune and your version is brilliant!
Love it. Absolutely top class....
Really impressive to see this played I wouldn't know where to start!
Thank you very much Sam.
Great job, NuttyLee. I wish I could play the piano like you. I love that unique sound of the fantastic Mr Barson!
Thank you very much Acha.
Such a nice thing for you to say.
Yayyy! Thank you... So useful :)
My God this is amazing! And you're self taught too? Bloody hell!! Your piano skills are so impressive and it sounds lovely too. It's only when you dissect these songs you realise what a musical genius Barso is. This must've been so complicated to learn by ear and even more so to do this tutorial.
Hi Dan.
Many thanks for such a wonderful comment, you inspire me to make more videos.
I really look forward to your comments as I know you REALLY know your stuff!.
Yep i`m self taught all because of Barzo.
I just had to try to see if I could play anything like he does, so I got meself a little keyboard back in 1983 & the rest is history ha ha.
Thats true, its only when you try to play the songs yourself that you then realise & get completely blown away by just how much is in their songs.
The most complicated thing i`ve had to work out by Barzo is his solo in Tomorrows Dream.
I`ve only just finally managed to do it, after bloody 33 years of trying !!!
Love it man aways wanted 2 play im gona give it a go thanks lee nice 1
Thanks James. Enjoy.
I`ve got a new version of this on the way.
Intro: G minor 7, without the dominant; E flat major, inverted; G minor; Gmsus2; Fm6; F minor; last one is unusual, A flat without a mediant and adding an F root or bass.
Sounds very similar to Dead end street by the kinks. Rise & fall was their masterpiece.
Yeah, I love Dead End Street.
A lot of chords are named such based on the steps in their scales. You are correct that an E flat major 7th shows up in the brass instrumental because the D flat is a seventh from the eighth in the scale E flat. The 'sus' is short for 'sustained,' usually for a 2nd - the mediant isn't the third step up from the root like usual, but a second, i.e. Amsus2 is A-B-E instead of A-C-E (A minor). 'Not Home Today' features a Gsus2 chord in the chorus (inverted) - D-G-A. This song has a lot of broken-sounding minor chords.
Thank you for your comments Justin.
