@@terryturner4116 I've had two FWD alfas and 2 RWD BMWs, it's not about the outright performance is about the mechanical beauty. Of course a 1200kg 147 is going to out-handle a 1500kg 1 series but all else being equal longitudinal RWD allows you to mount the engine lower and further back, amd higher powertrain efficiency. There's a lot of ugly emgineering that goes into FWD, the power leaves the engine to one side and has to be wrangled unsymettrically to the wheels, it requires a lot of weird joints and driveshafts to get it to work. In the end you get the front wheels needong to be really far back, a shorter wheelbase than ideal, big front overhang (unless you use a tiny engine).
It's just mechanically 'correct' to make a 4 wheeled, front engined vehicle, rear wheel drive.
The best layout is longitudinal mid engine RWD but a 2 seat supercar layout is impractical for most cars

@@chrisogrady28 I see your point from an engineering perspective, I watched the No27 video where Jack's 147 GTA went up against Jay's 130i and the BMW works better overall and the GTA is flawed while Fiat made the 20v engine work pretty well in the Stilo Abarth and Coupe where as the GTA is a rodeo bull. The 147's shape would have lent itself to being rwd both the 147 and 1 series are a similar overall shape and the 147 actually has small rear area and loads of room I the engine bay.

The same engine is in the e86 BMW Z4 3.0Si and it is a fantastic engine that propels it the car to 0 - 60 in 5.7 sec, not bad for a non M powered N52 magnesium block. I get it that the e86 is much more lighter with aluminium bonnet and two seats, but I would not say that it doesn’t like revving out to 7000 rpm limit, peak power is delivered at around 6500 rpm. The computer can be recoded to run on the cheaper wet cell SLI batteries, you can also change the Ampere Hour rating. If you code out the auto stop start feature there is no need to have such an expensive battery. If you have a 1 series with the auto stop start on as default, getting it disabled will extend the life of many components.

      @shannoncrawford7212 3 года назад +3

      @@malp6280
      True.
But it also depends on the torque curve and gear ratios.
Max acceleration comes from shifting when the wheel torque of the gear you are in at a given rpm would be less than the wheel torque of the next gear at whatever rpm you would start at in the next gear (which depends on your rpm shift point in the previous gear).
Which of course depends on those gear ratios (the percentage difference between the 2 being shifted between) and the torque curve.
      Reminder, that the wheel torque is dependent on the specific gear ratio also;
And is not the same as the engine torque and not the same for each gear at a given rpm.
In most cars that means revving it to redline, even if the engine torque drops off a bit before redline.
Because you’ll still have more torque at the wheels in the lower gear at the higher rpm than in the higher gear at a lower rpm, due to the difference in gear ratios.
      Better job explaining here:

      Thanks Gramps.
      Engineering problem for you.
BTW; I’m 43, have a degree in mechanical engineering also, have also owned many cars and motorcycles in my life, and like to drive them like I stole them (preferably on back country curvy roads).
Car (engine) produces 130 ft-lbs of torque between 6200 and 7800 rpms (which is max torque) and drops from 130 to 110 between 7800 and 8800 (redline).
      3rd gear ratio is 1.481
      4th gear ratio is 1.161
If you shift at redline in 3rd gear, what rpm will you start at in 4th gear?
      A: 8800(1.161)/1.481 = 6900
How much wheel torque are you producing in 3rd gear at 8800 rpm?
      A: 110(1.481) = 163 ft-lbs
How much wheel torque are you producing in 4th gear at 6900 rpm (the starting 4th gear rpm when shifting from redline in 3rd gear); and consequently is also the maximum wheel torque that can be achieved anywhere in 4th gear?
      A: 130(1.161) = 151 ft-lbs
I understand that the difference is low enough that you may not be perceiving a huge variation in felt acceleration by running this car to redline.
And that the car feels like it is running out of steam between 7800 and 8800 rpm because the engine torque is dropping.
But even so at its “low” point at 8800 rpm it is still producing more wheel torque in 3rd gear than when at peak engine torque in 4th gear.
And that if your goal is fuel economy, less noise/drama, and a smooth drive/ride, you can shift sooner and get close to the same feeling of acceleration.
But if max possible acceleration is your goal then shifting at redline achieves that.
And there are vehicles (based on the engine torque curve and gear ratios) that do accelerate faster when shifting prior to redline.
But the vast majority of production road vehicles accelerate the fastest possible when shifting at redline.
My modded Yamaha MT-10 achieves max engine torque between 7500 and 9500 rpm, with a redline near 12,000.
If only engine torque mattered for acceleration and gear ratios were irrelevant, then I should be able to shift at 9000 rpm in all gears and be at max acceleration (roughly, haven’t done the calculation to see what rpm it drops to with each gear shift based on gear ratio differences).
Granted that’s still accelerating hard, but if I’m trying to pass a string of 3 or 4 cars in a limited space, I make damn sure I’m up in the rev range (correct gear) and whack the throttle shifting at redline.
Usually if I start at around 50 mph, I am going 130-140+ mph in a few seconds as I’m getting around the lead car.

    • @malp6280
      @malp6280 3 года назад

@@shannoncrawford7212 kid, I've more chances then being 90 then you have being over 22!! "at best"
Theirs not a single bike Nor car that requires anyone to be at redline & apparently have maximum torque as maximum torque comes in well before redline in 99.99999% of more vehicles.
your then going on about bikes!! I'm not interested & their drive is completely different including power to weight, drive train loss etc.. that's also including lacking the addition of a several kg flywheel, which is also why bikes rev alot freely & also adds to why they rev much higher.
no car not even a bike requires to be high in the rev range to achieve there full power band!!
anyway.. other then the rubbish, glory seeking I drive 9k RPM for full power well all your doing is wasting fuel especially in a car when the power band is long since spent... for fuel economy changing early & keeping rev low & overall speed down gives the best fuel economy.. also driving around 60-65 sees the general best peak speed for the manufacturers fuel economy figures ie giving best mpg
also noting you seemingly move off topic, from cars to bikes..... "enough said!"

(are you sure the engine on your car is healthy??...if its down on power please check the vanos solenoids...if they are worn ,this happends to all n52 engines in time..,replacing them will restore power immediately!!!) i have had some duels with the e82 135i and they are on the top end very simular in speed...with the n52 having much more direct throttle response and better sound as a plus aswell. .... if you go the performance intake and exhaust upgrade route(like my 130i) it sound awesome!!!...

Mine had Dakota Full leather seats which are nice, but most Msport cars got half "leather" which is actually half plastic, and the seat side bolsters crack and fall apart even at low mileages. The car I had previously to that was a 330ci E46, and the ride, handling, steering and build quality were miles better.

If you do want to run an old 130i ‘project’ it really should be a pre-fl car, due to the steering issue. No amount of fettling ever makes the post-fl cars truly satisfying to drive.
Those cars tend to find their way back into enthusiast hands and have the maintenance items undertaken properly.
The fact that it was small was a massive positive. The 3 series was there with the same N52, if you wanted more space inside. The whole fun of these, it that they are so small, with a classic BMW 6pot still.
My main gripe with the E87/2 cars, after a decade and three of them was......
    1. The standard suspension was poor. Super cheap dampers were an issue.
Also rear subframe bushes that were changed post development, when BMW decided to market the car with run-flat tyres.
It ended up both too hard, yet also floaty and vague!
This cost about £1200-1800 to totally fix.
    2. You need T-Rex arms to use the front electric window controls!
Really poor positioning that was ignored during development.
    3. Rear washer would only stay unblocked for a few weeks, then clog up again!
    Just really annoying.
Most of the other complaints are related to people owning old ones, with some maintenance issue, or a misunderstanding of what the car was.
