I did 88,000 miles in one 10 years or so ago when it was my company car for 2 years. I loved it to bits, put a smile on my face every time I cold started it in the morning, such a lovely engine. I was single and sprogless at time so I didn't care about boot space or bumpy back road ride. Great size too, easy to park, easy to dart about in traffic, instant torque. I was based in North Wales (Ruthin) at the time and had to drive through mid Wales to South Wales a lot as well as all over the country but late-night drives home through mid-Wales in that car were special - windows open, foot down.

This car went under the radar. Everyone who wanted a car like this just went and got the Golf R32. Great car, the final version of the 3 litre straight 6 in the best chassis at the time.
I own an E82 125i, so has the same engine as this 130i, just de-tuned. I absolutley love these cars, such a lovely engine note to rev out and with a brilliant chassis to go with it.

Had a few chances to buy one of these a few years back. The power was linear compared to the turbo cars I had at the time. Always wish I’d had one now as it’s a great set up. Rwd and a N/A straight 6 hatch were a rare thing moving on where the 325ti E46 ended its run.
The 135i wasn't available until 2007 so for two years this was the fastest 1 series available. I had one with a 135i backbox and center resonator removed, sounded epic. Still regret selling it, but I'll certainly have another when circumstances allow. Awesome cars.
Nice car but my wife has a 5 door aswell and I’ve never sat in a car where I have as much trouble getting in and out! The doors are Tiny and so are the side windows! (I’m 6’5”- which doesn’t help! Lol)

I remember watching top gear when this came out Jezza put it against the R32 and this was slightly quicker but back seats were utterly useless if you were over 6ft. Personally id rather daily an R32 but the 130 is good for what it is. The design is like the Megane was.... Either you hate it or love it...
These are a fair bit quicker than R32s in a straight line. By far the most disappointing car I've ever driven is a Mk5 golf R32. So underwhelming to drive. The GTI is far better imo, other than noise.

Took for ever to find a 128i 6spd msport, unfortunately the 3.0 is detuned and does not have disa intake,room for improvement. Msport suspension is amazing and yes this probably is the best/favorite all around car I've ever owned. Own year and all it needed was 1 coil & oil. A lot of car for the money, & the n52 never dies
Don't understand why people hate on this car? If you don't like hatches, then don't buy one.. This is the FASTEST P Plater car in Australia in QLD as it's got a 5.8 sec 0-100 time and also.. Has a BMW badge :) Hatch fans? "Me" I love this thing to DEATH, people think they don't look appealing when they look stock in grey and I do agree, looks a bit eh but when you look at ones with a lip at the rear with some splitters at the front along with matching wheels, they are sexy to be honest!
Yes and rare to find and expensive now so good var I have BMW 1 series 118i 06 modell and it drives like a dream;) Yes awesome cars and I love small cars and computer its the best for me;) And BMW egine is awesome I have N46. No problems now. Yes it looks so good and great styling right here. I have carbon spoiler on mine (small) and eyelids etc..
If it has Hydraulic steering, yes. I know Australia got the option of EPS but still had Hydraulic steering if not optioned with the E-Lsd etc. I know some countries didn't get the options we did so UK for example - LCI = EPS 😞
There is an light weight version of this car which comes with Factory an wheels very similar at the M3GTR (the need for sped one) looking to buy it is around 10k if you lucky you can find one at 5k 6k

Older N52 motor (not sure what year in the 1 series but I think around 2007) was a lot more reliable, the later N53 was the engine that suffered from HPFP and injector issues, a lot owere rectified with stronger parts under warranty, so should be less of an issue today. That and the weaker more flawed engines will have started to filter out now 😂
Generally the N52;s are known to be solid engines, nothing to worry about as long as it's been maintained properly. If you prefer a coupe you could always grab yourself a 125i which is the same engine as the 130i but restricted. So a simple map gets you to about 270bhp in a small 1 series coupe with a manual box.
I'm currently looking for a good one, I'm just saving my money waiting to find one, and hoping my 120i can hold out until then. Any advice on what to look out for?
The best I've ever driven, compared to genI &II SHO's(Mazda sourced 5 spd), better than my rx8 series II 6spd box as well. Literally a great trans (no rev hang). The steering is perfectly communicative, this car literally feels as if it's breaking the laws of physics the maneuvers it lets u get away with. You'll love both to sum it up!
I have both a 130 and 330, I prefer the 330 in every way except for the size for uk B roads, where the little hatch comes into its own. E46 on 200k miles now and going strong.

@@LeeFall Generally, BMW's inline 6 (petrol or diesel) is what you want. Most if not all 4 cylinder engines in this period have issues. Having said that, many still do get the 123d, swap the chain and maintain it properly without an issue, so it is up to you.
@@LeeFall you don't need to worry, if the chain is done it will not have problems. Diesel engine are less prone to stress compared to petrol, 123d with remap is about 260/270hp with almost 500nm of torque. They are little monsters and with good fuel economy. Way better coiche than 125/130i. Only 135 and 1m are better
@@huwwilliams6477 In Australia 330i's are not cheaper. Not the same engine. E46 has an M54 (170kw, not N52 (190kw). I won't even bother debating the practicality of a 4 door hatch vs an E46 330i.

I bought my 130i for my channel, however it is 265bhp standard, the later models were 258bhp

The 3L ones don't have issues. The N52 engine super strong when it comes to N.A engines, but not good for turbos as it's a aluminium block.
No they don't! The N52 is bombproof. Probably the most reliable engine BMW has made in the last 25 years.
