I love route setters. They're like the mystical wise wizards of the climbing world. Great video, I really liked the background music choice in this one.
As a routesetter myself I can agree that you don't see that move rarely at all in bouldering. It is harder than it looks to set a route and have it be climbed the way you imagined. Good video, crazy fun looking boulder problem. I like that routesetter's style.
Very true, and to set one up is tricky for any routesetter, everything has to be set up just the right way in order for it to work. The figure 4 is still a fun move to do once one figures it out
Agreed, some contortionist-y moves like these are really tricky to force, especially when you try to set within a grade, and not just "bloody murder difficult"
Cheech is a great setter (used to set at my local gym) happy to see him featured as I haven't seen him in years! His routes flow very well and are always fun. Neat to see the process.
Eric, while you're on gym gym touring spree you should totally visit "Oslo klatresenter" in Norway and meet up with Magnus Midtbø. It's his home gym where he trains everyday. A pretty cool gym with exciting features. He's a youtuber himself and it would be cool to see you create some episodes together.
As it seems so many do, I too love the route setting videos, and would love to hear even more of the strategies behind the process. Cheech seems so chill! :)
A friend of mine has been wanting to set a figure 4 , but every time he does, we just hack it by campusing it. Appreciate the mentioning of some considerations for setting that specific moves!
Im fairly new to climbing, but I think its like a lock-off where you can stabilize your lower body? Cause otherwise you would have to campus it like Nikken which is harder. I think in both cases, you're still supporting your weight with just the 1 hand, but figure 4 makes that sequence more static and controlled
TwistinFool i think it's to push too. Like when you do a one arm pull up, it's easier if you put your other hand on your bicep to push... am i being clear? Sorry for bad english
It would be really cool to let the fans know ahead of time what gym and when you guys are visiting! Have a meet up sort of, it'd be cool to climb with you guys.
I have climbed this route setter's problems for 5 years. He's made me cry once or twice lol (semi joke), but I'm a better climber today because of him and his crew. I'm also healthy and strong because of him.
lol this video really made me feel like dropping out of medschool LOL. i miss climbing and being able to set and climb all day sounds like a dream. great video man.
So I'm very very new to Bouldering, but I was wondering: what is the benefit of doing a figure four? Does it make your body more stable when you're making that move?
Excuse my ignorance, but I just recently started climbing and am wondering about the figure 4... WHY? What are the advantages of that move? I would have thought moving my leg over my arm would upset my balance point and add more strain to the arm the leg is hanging on. Someone please enlighten me, so I can go and try this move myself :) Thank you!
I'm a climbing novice, but i fell in love with the figure 4 the first time i saw it. I think the benefit is that it helps bring your hip higher and closer to the wall when there is no good foot. However, I was told that "if you can do a figure 4 to hit the next hold, you can do it without a figure 4". I've found this to mostly be true. You're putting a lot of weight on your hand, so the hold has to be good for a figure 4. If the old is THAT good... might as well just campus or dyno. Go try it out, it's fun and makes you look like like you know what youre doing... maybe?
I watched like half of the video and was just looking at a guy in the back and thought "Is that Nikken? He sorta looks like Nikken..." Turns out...it was Nikken😂😂😎
Jamie Stewart in short: leverage & stability. Somebody commented that it keeps your lower body stable for longer moves. Not often applicable to bouldering or sport, mostly in ice climbing oddly enough.
I love route setters. They're like the mystical wise wizards of the climbing world. Great video, I really liked the background music choice in this one.
Ah sweet, i really like this kind of music with the routesetters :)
A bathang and a figure 4 on the same problem! Awsome!
I'm new to climbing but it's not hard to put two and two together in that route-setters are artists in their craft. Cool to see how a problem unfolds.
As a routesetter myself I can agree that you don't see that move rarely at all in bouldering. It is harder than it looks to set a route and have it be climbed the way you imagined. Good video, crazy fun looking boulder problem. I like that routesetter's style.
Yeah figure 4s are more for ice climbing
Very true, and to set one up is tricky for any routesetter, everything has to be set up just the right way in order for it to work. The figure 4 is still a fun move to do once one figures it out

So excited to see Michaela! She's one of my fave climbers!
Cheech is a great setter (used to set at my local gym) happy to see him featured as I haven't seen him in years! His routes flow very well and are always fun. Neat to see the process.
Ah cool that you know him, will you be here for the grand opening?
Hope to be, the gym looks amazing! I love that you are covering First Ascent.
This is the best route setting video I have ever watched. It is really well explained and the way it is edited together really works well. Thanks.

Watching an artist at work... so so so pumped to climb there

I wish :( If I was in Chicago I would, but I am at school in Iowa at the moment
Probably the coolest problem I've ever seen! The route setting vids are really cool
Glad you liked it man :D
love anything related to climbing already, but this music is just so good! keep coming back to this video.
This is your best episode. Really like the new style of editing. Excellent camera work. Nice job dude.
Maan thanks a lot
This guy is insanely and so quietly strong at the same time...
Indeed he is. His boulder are not quiet though, they are sandbagged!
So awesome. I love route setters vids! Keep having fun, and I look forward to seeing more :D
Came looking for ideas for setting on my home wall...was very surprised to see my favorite setter! I miss you guys.
Very cool problem. Hope to see more of this gym and Cheech in the future.

Oh my Gawd! This looks to be the best gym in Chicago for bouldering...
I can't wait to get home and try it!
Was definitely my favorite out of all the gyms that I climbed at in Chicago :)
Excellent vid. Super nice guy (Cheech), I like to see how he developed the problem. Really excellent. Thanks a lot!
Yeah Cheech is a super nice guy, really stoked he was able to join us :D
Nice boulder! Nikken looked so happy 😊 Job well done everyone♡

Nice set. Now I need to build some strength and figure how to set my own figure 4 problem.
I REALLY want to try that white problem! It looks so cool
A friend of mine has been wanting to set a figure 4 , but every time he does, we just hack it by campusing it. Appreciate the mentioning of some considerations for setting that specific moves!
That looked like a really fun climb, im gonna try to remember chicago if i ever go to america
Awesome vid Eric :) keep up the good work
Will do Fares!
Loved the background music on this video. Good choice!
Thanks man :D
Awesome problem and video
That move seems very similar with the movement in Ice climbing, but it´s the first time i see in bouldering jaja
Greetings from Chile!
Really well done video and topic. Keep it up.
Ahh, the setting process. This video depicts the changes and thoughts of a setter well.
It looks so fun, i want to be able to do climbing like that. But i guess it will take a few more years to get to that level.
oh shit! first ascent! brings back memories
Can someone explain how the figure 4 is beneficial, just seems like the weight of the leg around your arm can cause you to fall off a hold

It's a good rest - you can let go of anything but the holding hand. And you can reach pretty far from there (already in a "locked" type position).
it can offer extremely good static reach above anything else
Now with second camera to see eric filming :D great episode mate!
haha ;D
He seems like such a nice guy!!
He sure is! :D
That was such a cool vlog. Wish I lived in Chicago now. :-(
It would be really cool to let the fans know ahead of time what gym and when you guys are visiting! Have a meet up sort of, it'd be cool to climb with you guys.

Psyched to hear it :D
lol this video really made me feel like dropping out of medschool LOL. i miss climbing and being able to set and climb all day sounds like a dream. great video man.
haha there will be plenty of time in life to climb and set problems ;D
So I'm very very new to Bouldering, but I was wondering: what is the benefit of doing a figure four? Does it make your body more stable when you're making that move?
Man awesome vid, love it!!
Cheers! :D
Nikken just beasts through the problem like it's nothing!
Awesome episode!
Loved this episode

How high are those walls? They really high for bouldering.
And that figure-four move is insane.
7:23 HOW??
Yay for Michaela!!!! :D
I watched like half of the video and was just looking at a guy in the back and thought "Is that Nikken? He sorta looks like Nikken..." Turns out...it was Nikken😂😂😎
Film something with michaela! Ask her how to climb so smooth? She's a crusher
looks fun
Being from Chicago, love FA! You guys coming to DC anytime soon? :D
I hope so! Think i will stay in Sweden for a while now, but next year maybe ;D
How do you become a route setter?
Those finger pockets look gnarly af :D fun problem.
This problem is beautiful! Watch the camera focus though ;)
Love it
looked like a sick route well made after how it looked for me
5:33 you can see it in his eyes he wants to jump it ;D
Erik it seems like your focus is a bit off when people are talking in the interview parts of the video i.e. 0:30
Where is this climbing gym?
Wow nice one
I’m a new climber can somebody explain what a figure 4 does.
Very cool vid!
fricking awesomee!!!
wow so cool
really nice problem dude!!
More route setting :D
what grade does Cheech climb on?? He looks mad strong!!!!
I think around 7C/8A outside, if i remember correctly :)
Thanks for your reply Eric!! keep up the good work!!!
Video with Michaela coming up?
We didnt have time this trip sadly, but maybe next time :)
nice move ! nice music ! gj ;)
sick
I'm a bit new so could anyone tell me what a figure 4 is for?
Jamie Stewart in short: leverage & stability. Somebody commented that it keeps your lower body stable for longer moves. Not often applicable to bouldering or sport, mostly in ice climbing oddly enough.
Noah R. Cool thanks😊
Chichuan is the man!
Nikken & I have the same shoes 😎 love the music... I’m so sick of the typical techno music in climbing vlogs ...and gyms for that matter.
Then they opened the wall, people fell over and over on that move and were told: "You just got Cheeched"!!!
Nice!
Did Nikken not try to cheat the final form?
What rating was this problem? If he said I missed it.
I think he was shooting for it to be around V6ish
@eric music is a little too loud
whens gregory padovani coming to sweden?
maan i wish he could arrive in sweden every month :D
Sweet first problem
Very nice problem.
