Very inspiring
Damn right! haha
He's one of the most giving filmmakers. His interviews are always so honest and detailed. I'll watch any of his interviews in a second.
i laughed when he said "no backsies!"
How do you do it?
It took me 37 mins and 55 secs to watch this one interview.
exactly
Nicole, yup. One of my absolute favorite directors.

YES... My New Favorite too....
how humble a director of this stature can be? A beautiful human being. A terrific piece of interview by Ryan, LOVED IT.
Okay this sounds weird now but I finally understood what Tarantino meant when he said, you don’t have to do it as a director, you don’t have to worry how to get it on the screen, you have people who do it for you.
Thx David Sandberg
Lights Out was pretty damn good for a first film, incredible.
Annabelle: Creation as his second film and his upcoming third film, Shazam.
@@player2-lightwater914 the swedish pricker and the digger of true paranormal's annabelle's stories !!!!!!
Absolutely. That film really motivated me to make my content, no matter the budget.
I absolutely love David's perspective, coming from basically no budget and no experience to directing three feature films, one of which is a DC movie. Over the course of like 5 years! That's really incredible, and it's great he's so down to earth and open about sharing his experiences of being a director. He's talked about a lot of things that most directors never talk about.
I can feel the passion in Ryan's eyes when he's listening to David :)
Or jealousy, lol
@@HappySince1982 yes, jelousy
This is very inspiring. I''m going to face my fears, ignore my reservations, and finally go out and film the ideas I've been working on. Thank you for this.
Hope you've made your film!
How did your film go? :D
Dont give up your dayjob just yet
youtube is an awesome tool to use. yet folks say filmmaking is a waste of time if its a short and on youtube. i love youtube and the chance that ppl have on here.
" yet folks say filmmaking is a waste of time if its a short and on youtube" --- ahhh who the hell sais this ? ive never heard anyone say that and its more than likely coming from people who dont know SHIT about moffies.. dont listen to them Chad.
I agree with you Chad - I love RUclips too and it is a great place to display your movie making art.
People who say that, don't know what they are talking about. Even though RUclips is at its worst, it's still a great place to share your content from. And as farm as making short films being a waste of time, that's a load of shit if I ever heard one. Practice makes perfect, and no one starts by making feature length films...
Chad Micah Johnson filmmaking is never a waste of time, as an aspiring director myself I just make movies to make a movie I don’t give a shit whether anyone sees it or not
The difference between David and Ryan is that Ryan isn't a storyteller. David always has these ideas and crazy concepts where Ryan is more intrigued by the technical aspects.
It's interesting watching these guys have an interview being a long-time fan of Ryan, and of David before he even hit Hollywood. And as a film graduate it's easy to see why someone who knows a lot less about cameras and production ends up in Hollywood over someone who's dedicated their life to it. You need to know the in and outs of filmmaking, but to be successful you need to tell stories. Incredibly fresh and brilliant stories.
When you mean Ryan, Ryan Johnson?
Rohith Kumar Ryan Connolly the interviewer
This is incredibly accurate in my opinion. As a person who is fascinated by the technical realm of film, I always find it difficult to get my mind focused on the story, or creation of story and it always seems that filmmakers with good ideas yet bad execution seem to get more attention than the reverse because story is where the content comes from. Although I do believe it is possible to be both, you just have to work extra hard on one or the other. The benefit of being technical as a director is just like what David mentions in the video, you can speak a little bit of the language of your departments that are helping you make a vision come to life. Its always helpful to know the process as a director so you know what you are asking and what it means to make a request from your team.
Yeah I agree!
I’ve recently seen that Kurosawa interview where he says if you want to make a movie, all you need is a pen and paper.
You need
1. A very strong vision that you maintain right to the end of production (with flexibility, of course)
2. The ability to execute with confidence and diligence, without choking.
I really appreciate this interview. It's really interesting to see someone talk candidly about making the transition from DIY filmmaker to hollywood director. I feel like we're going to have a whole new generation of filmmakers operating with a completely different mindset cause of this.
Heres hoping he does well with shazam
He did
he did
He fucking did!!!! It’s nothing but uphill now.
He sure did
he slayed it
OH MY GOSH... I Love these 2 guys...
The Best of the Best...
Thank y'all for making this great movie...
I am such a FAN of both of you.
He delivered with Shazam.
This interview was incredibly inspiring. I’m a seasoned photographer, with little experience in film, but after watching this, I’m more excited than ever to just go out and create. This was obviously filmed some time ago. Shazam! Was awesome!
These director interviews are just awesome! Thanks for putting the full interview up.
This interview is superb. Really inspiring. Love how down to earth David is.
I loved this video. True congratulations to you David F. Sandberg on your success. All disheartened filmmakers should take time to see this interview and realise there is no time to give up. Make your movies and put them on RUclips! You could be the next Lights Out! Be strong and take heart.
the lighting and colorgrading is lit 👌🕯
Right? I wanna know how!
If it gives some comfort or confidence: I went through film school, and no, there's no reason productions take forever to move a camera or re-angle a lamp.
I've been thinking of becoming a filmmaker by going to film school which is great because I'll get to meet people and learn more but honestly David F. Sandberg with his youtube channel "ponysmasher" help me with the decision. I went anxious for some days thinking about my future, but the way David explains everything, on how he makes his shorts, how he faced obstacles, tips and tricks, cheap alternatives made feel much more relaxed. He is the best and not pretentious, very down to earth.
I wish more people supported Shazam, was a great film.
Nahhhhhh

Great interview its so cool to hear his story of getting into Hollywood and making his two movies
Awsome!! this kind of videos are always welcome.
That sad david had such difficult time . I believe we should interview everyone who going to involve in the set .so you can realised about person and his creativity . Best option is director must handle the camera directing , so he can take the shot according to his imagination.
Incredible interview guys! What a humble, down-to-earth dude. Can't wait for Dan's interview.
Thank u both for this!!!!🙌🏾 so inspiring and motivating. Appreciate this beyond measure
Thank you for this interview!
Love this interview! Two of some of my favorite filmmakers. Really interested to see how Shazam turns out
This was so awesome! Thank you so much.
Really great interview! I found out about David F. Sandberg years before the feature films and I am really glad! He is a great human being and a promising director!! Gj film riot👌
Can't wait for the Dan Trachtenberg interview as well. I remember the interview with him on this channel a LONG time ago.
Love this, thank you guys :D
I gotta say, this interview is fannnnntastic, wow, Ryan can really host and he really let's the guest breathe 10/10
Great interview. David is very humble and skilled. Has made three solid genre films.
Amazing information! Thank you team!
That was so interesting! Thank you, Film Riot!
Sooo inspired! Working on my first solicited short film. For the first time I will just be directing. Don't know how I feel about that, but I feel better after watching this.
Great and helpful interview! Thanks!
this is great! I had given up on Film Riot because of the craziness but things have really turned around here!
I love how honest this dude is!
The end of this video always brings tears to my eyes.
Love that it's worked out for him!
Great conversation!!!
No sugar coat answers ..thanks you guys for sharing your experiences
Thanx Ryan and David....
Fantastic interview! It's amazing that this guy is a hero to the film community, and shares so much, but no matter what, there are haters that have given a bunch of dislikes to this video. Those dislikes are pure jealousy. Rock on!
Hoping Ryan goes to Hollywood too!
Relax..only Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Respect for this man
H is a great director excellent job with anabelle creation was amazing movie
Thank you for such honesty!!
Credit to the interviewer for asking great questions and then letting him answer. Well done!
Awesome interview 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿I’m not a horror scary movie person, I’m trying to be, ive watched a few lately! I like David Sandberg a lot so I’ve seen all his RUclips material!! Great interview right here!!
Love this interview David Samberg Ryan Conley this is amazing it’s like a rags to riches type interview
this is crazy cool how this came about ....great interview.....
I can relate to the misery. My last project was the biggest I'd done and I swore I'd not do it again.
Still editing it but planning the next one already.
Same here. Been working on one for 3 years now. I think I'll do another short after 😂
Excellent questions!
Such a great interview!
Great interview, man!
Good questions, thank you!
I can finally hear a hint of Sandberg's Swedish accent in this. I've watched all his most recent videos on his channel and I couldn't detect it at all. It's amazing to me because he isn't a person who only spent his childhood in Sweden or whatever. I geek out about this stuff because I enjoy learning other languages, and someone who can just completely own a second language amazes me.
im really inspired by u and yr efforts. annebelle and light out both were good movies. i admire people who make something from nothing
Great interview! Thank you so much for allowing David to speak as he does and not censoring the language. It means so much to me, I lost respect for you guys on Film Riot for the censorship. I know you guys have partners and sponsors so I can forgive it but censorship is just plain evil. Love what I'm seeing here! Oh, and you know what would be so cool? If you got an interview with the other David Sandberg of Kung Fury and called that interview From No Budget to Cannes.
Thanks for sharing your experience it's really helpful,
Love this guy.
Excellent story and great guy.
Such a peaceful humble soul. I can't believe he creates the movie genre that he creates. Hes great!
Now i know why David seem tired in all of Shazam interviews lol, loved this guy
I kinda wish I could watch the over 2 hour long cut!
It kind of bothers me that certain people, because of clout, get to slap their name on a film they had nothing at all to do with creating or inspiring. James Wan is a fantastic and talented filmmaker, but his name appears almost first in the credits, not because he was creatively one of the influencers of this “Lights Out” phenomenon, but instead it was because he had the name. I know it’s the politics that you have to play to see your dream come to light...but it still feels intrusive and somehow in bad taste.
The guy is a good director
Just hope he received a good material to work with
Oh.... that was a "Punch in the Gut"... He's already done "Good Material"... his own films.
Great video!
Ooh sweet, can't wait for the Dan trachtenberg interview as well
this was great!
Hey well done guys and hats off to you David I've always been a fan of your short films as i too make short films and comedy. Also hats off to you umm guy from Film Riot Ryan! yea you thought me few stuff i think so and have not answered few of my questions but well done guys.
I love how technical this interview is. You can tell they both love their jobs.
hahah his story about the hi speed short cut reminded me of my buddy complaining about how lazy people became when digital took over in the early 2000's
Anybody also noticed how beautiful lit this interview is? 😅
I have just been watching him in youtube before I watch this interview. Is it coincidence 🙂
Seeing the two of you together is just so super awesome! Two of my favourite film guys.
David!! You're my hero!!!
Wow, what a great story!
Shazam!!
Excellent!
This guy gets it. Knows ins and out of different realms but is more focused on story over everything. Creativity is the main ingredient.
Wow, that is a fantastic story!
Glad to be subscribed also here
that awkward moment when you meet the man you thought you'd be...
Bruh 😂
dang
Lol
Yeah but it's unhealthy and pointless to compare yourself with anyone, especially in this context, just because there are similarities doesn't mean he "made it" and ryan didn't or whatever, it's just different, I'll watch movies from both of them
🧐
How awesome is David? Really comes across as a genuine guy.
SevrinK too good and is true
Dream BIG! Amazing story..
Believe in your work and everything will happen from there
Really like the look and feel of this video, specifically the lighting. Please, can we have a video on the setup; lighting, sound, and camera, for this particular interview? Hope this is not asking for too much.
There actually was a video about it on the main Film Riot channel.
Встретились две легенды!
awesome
Very cool I'm looking forward to be a successful film director & know how to interview film directors, actors and actresses my dream
Yes!!!!!
Good interview, the editing on this is a little annoying (cutting to interviewers reaction every time) , It would be nice to have you both in one frame, unless your not actually there ?
I guess it was because they had only 2 cameras. One on David and one on Ryan. No third cam3ra to capture the long shot.
Wow!
David F. Sandberg DID AN AMAZING JOB WITH SHAZAM
Is it just my monitor or at 03:21 someone just really passed behind the white panel 😰
11:23 I know it's not true, but why do I imagine Ryan suppressing his anger in this laugh. "Did you story board? Shotlist?"" Do you even know what any of that fucking means?! " LOL! No, but this is a great interview...
