Great reaction Harri! The American saying about paying the devil to replace her basically means I'd do anything for it...even make a deal with the devil. Hope you're staying well!
Thanx..i suspected it was an American saying 😁
All of the lower register singing on this song is John Oates.
I'd pay the devil to replace her, what a line, high quality songwriting.
Great line indeed
You could take that line in another way, lol.
I’d pay the devil to replace her, means that she’s so bad, he would pay the devil to take her place. Meaning that the devil is less evil than she is.
John Oates sings some strong harmonies with Daryl, on the chorus too!
This song was on their first album in the early 70s. There weren’t a lot of sophisticated electronics then. It i s one of their best songs.
This song put them on the road to stardom!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️🎤🎼🎸🎹
"my daddy tried to bore me with a sermon " ..... .& "my face aint lookin any younger " ....are my fav lines .
This song absolutely makes it in to my top-100 songs ever written.
Great lyrics, great musical arrangement, great vocals-a nearly perfect song that will be played another 50 years from now.
No words for how great this song is.
These guys had such a knack for putting out really solid well-written songs....and yet as good as they were, I don't believe they ever had a number one hit. Interestingly, many of the acts that had number one hits during H&O's heyday are long forgotten. These guys endure.
My personal favorite - 'Sara Smile'. Hall's finest vocal.
They had 6 songs reach the number 1 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.
They had several.
@@teknikel If I had bothered to even look it up I would have been able to tell that. You're correct. I was relying on what I remember from having lived through that era. It seemed like they were never in the top spot, just constantly so achingly close to it. Thanks for the correction.
@@hungfao I lived it, too. I knew they had number ones. I looked it up to see how many.
Harri, it's always a joy watching your videos! Good choice. Try Sara Smile by Hall and Oates. God bless you. ❤❤
Love your reactions ❤ Sara Smile is another great song.
I love Hall & Oates ❤❤❤❤❤
H&O were my first concert in 1978, it was amazing!
How about “Kiss on my List”? These guys are great. I think the devil is his desperation. They were all over the radio in the 80’s. 😍
I enjoyed this. Maneater is the Hall and Oates song that comes to mind
This, “Sara Smile,” & “Rich Girl” are my favorites of theirs.
I got to see them in concert before they really hit big. So it was in a small nightclub, with maybe 20 tables. We had a table right in front, and could've touched them, they were so close. It was like a private performance in my living room. It was wicked cool! And they sounded just as good live as on their recordings. Good memories, so thanks!
I’m jealous!
Sweet.
When were they not big? Neither one shaved (John was born with the mustache) when they started. They had a #1 hit nearly outta the gate. I saw them in the late 70’s and they were drawing big audiences then. It’s been #1 hit after hit since then. Such a tremendous body of work. A catalog of music for all people!
@@roymoore3156 So somehow you think that groups back then formed, got an album deal right away, and then just started churning out hits? These guys started playing together 2 years before they officially became a duo and after that it took 3 years before they had an album. For groups of the period 5 years is virtually overnight.
Bloomington, Ind. Bluebird ?
70's blue eyed soul - great stuff.
Can't go wrong with a Hall & Oates reaction! Also, please try any of the live jams at Daryl's house. You're gonna love it!
Daryl's house shows Daryl's talents and how he lets his guests shine! Love them all, but especially Elle King singing Every Time You Go Away! She is fantastic!
Philly Soul. This came out in 1973, but was only a hit locally in the Philadelphia area at first. It was re-released in 1976, and blew up nation-wide.
Both Daryl Hall and John Oates sang lead on this one. Oates sings the lead on the verses with Hall doing the high octave harmonies, and then Hall sings lead on the chorus with Oates on harmony vocals.
Never knew . I’ve listened since the seventies and always wondered. I know about google but never looked up. Thanks for this.
@@zubee1 You're very welcome. I believe it was John who wrote it, too.
Never listened to this with headphones. Very blue-eyed soul. The outtro reminds me of the outtro "Midnight Train to Georgia."
.
Why the devil? I think the point is that he's so desperate he'd even go to the devil.
.
Fun fact: H&O have never gone by "Hall & Oates" but only by "John Hall and Daryl Oates" and ask fans and the media to please use their full name.
"I'd pay the devil to replace her". An expression of the man's desperation to have her back.
Next song by them..."Sara Smile." Just as good, or Better. Both were Huge Hits.
Great old 70s song. These guys were really something.
First view, first comment?! This never happens. I’m late for everything! I have *so* enjoyed watching *you* enjoy songs from my childhood & salad (college) days. Too many people dismiss ‘70s music as nothing but “Ugh, disco!” - some of which was awesome, BTW, such as Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” & “On the Radio” - although it was so much more than this one genre. (The lyric is “I’d pay the devil to replace her;” that is, sell his soul to have her back. Not in the sense of being gifted with a “replacement” for her, but to have her, specifically, placed with him again.
Back to the 70's and 💯💥💯
Love Hall & Oats!! So much soul i these guys!!
THE SONG CAME ABOUT COS JOHN ARRANGED TO MEET A GIRL AND SHE STOOD HIM UP. HE WENT BACK HOME AND DARYL AND HIM WROTE THIS AMAZING SONG THE SAME NIGHT.
I love this song, one of my favorites.
John is singing the low part.
I heard the other day that Hall and Oates is the most successful musical duo of all time, even outselling Simon and Garfunkel or Carpenters! Thanks for your reaction to this classic song, Harri! Hanging out for a while on your channel always puts a smile on my face!!
Thanx Mack..without the knife 😀
Depending on the day either this or "Sara Smile" are my two favorites by these guys, the greatest blue eyed soul duo of all time. Their cuts "I Can't Go For That" and "One On One" are classics as well. By the way, that's an electric piano at the opening of the song.
Luuuuv Hall and Oats! My favorite song by them is Sarah Smile! Daryl Hall has such a soulful voice!
Great Duo. Loved Them in concert!
Yes, "Pay the devil" is a saying, more common in the past. It indicates someone in the absolute depths of despair, willing to make a deal with even the worst.
The Devil because he misses her so very much that he'd go to the ultimate purveyor of evil to replace her.
Have you looked into Daryl's House? He has some of the best musicians and singers come to his home studio to jam!!
Oh! Hadn't heard of that! Have to look into that, thanks for the recommendation!
@@craigmccausland1183 one of my favorites is Cee-Lo Green. So many to choose from!! Enjoy 😁
I reacted to that
@@HarriBestReactions thanks, I'll go check it out 😁
We aren’t jealous of you, we’re enjoying the ride with you Harri. 😉
Thanks! 😃😁😁🤣
3 Dog Night “Shambala”. ❤️
Daryl Hall solo projects are great too "Dreamtime" "Somebody like you" from his 1986 solo album "Three hearts in the happy ending machine" "Cab driver" "Can't stop dreaming" from his 2003 album "Can't stop dreaming"
Daryl got better looking as he got older. Still sounds fantastic too. ☺️💜💚💛✌️
You can clearly hear the Philly Soul influence. I could definitely imagine this being performed by Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes.
Love these guys! So many hits! They still hold the record for Best Selling Duo as they should. Please check out more also check out some of Daryls house performances, you will love! Keep On Rockin`
I love everything they've done!!!
I always thought it was, “It would take the devil to replace her”................
ICONS💯💯💯💯💯💯
I love Hall and Oats! Great music, songwriting, and voices. Yes, he's saying he'd pay the devil because of the whole "making a deal with the devil" thing...very taboo concept!! Such as, "selling your soul" for something you really want! Not advisable! LOL!
Harri, dear -- If you haven't yet, please check out their "Sara Smile." Love Hall & Oates! Thanks.
John Oats is sooo underated bc he was pushed to the back during the 80's MTV era. If you watche the videos from that era you can see how they put Daryl Hall to the front. Both have great voices, but I believe John Oates was completely underated bc blond, tall and blue eyed Daryl was what the ladies wanted I guess. Personaliy I prefer the barotone of John Oates & really wish we had heard him take the full lead on more songs, w/Daryl singing harmony only. Watch the live version 1976, She's Gone, and you'll see how great it was to have more of John's voice included. Wish they had stuck to that over the years.
Harri, fine reaction as always, this duo are at the top of their game on this one, songwriting at it's very best backed by their excellent band. As you know I always do a recommendation, as a musician and D.J back in the day, I have 60 years of music experience of both playing and listening, but there is only one song that can bring me to tears and it's not rock/ blues/pop that I'm usually into, in fact it's classical. You have to experience Luciano Pavarotti with "NESSUN DORMA", it will not fail to move you even if you are not into the genre. Take care kid and cheerio from Glasgow.
Its so hard to remember some of these reactions but this sounds like a great suggestion
Sweet Philly Soul ❤❤❤❤
Another great reaction!
Trust Me On These Classics My Music Lovin Brother,, HALL & OATES "LAS VEGAS TURNAROUND" (THE STEWARDESS SONG) & "WHEN THE MORNING COMES"
Check out live from Daryl's house, he has a collection of amazing musicians in his house band and has guests of all kind on.
Thank you for doing this, 💜 💓 your reaction.
You beat me here Sabine! I was just getting ready to e-mail you about this one. Take care girly!
Hey Jenn, Happy Mother's day.

Daryl Hall is singing lead and playing the keyboard. Oats sings and plays the guitar.
John is singing lead in this song, only a few he does.
@@sandyshoenberger2697 John is sharing the lead with Daryl but Daryl is leading more than John, if you had ever seen them performing this song live on stage you would know this. I saw them performing Shes Gone 3 times live. 1974 at Symphony Hall in Boston, they were the opening act for the Bee Gees. again at Max's in New York and were the opening act for Bruce Springsteen ( twice at Max's ) I was 26 years old at the time.
@@oldschool72 You're right. I have always been a John Oates fan, just like to give him credit. Everyone knows Daryl's voice.
I have seen them many times first in 1980 or 1981. Last in early to mid 2000.
Give a listen to their song Sara smiles stay safe
They're from my town and they are singing together.
Yes it is
John is the low voice, Daryl the high! And sometimes they switch.
Usually when people make a deal with the devil their souls are required as payment, so it shows the depths that he would go to, to get her back, losing his immortal soul.
No songs would exist if a woman wasn't around.
Mother's Day is the reminder.
Have a great week.
Al Jarreau "We're In This Love Together "
So much soul and so beautifully written and paced! Perfection!
...and a Fender Rhodes electric piano too...
Played on Fender Rhodes electric piano.
It has been a well known phrase for centuries that so and so "made a deal with the devil" also called
Daryl was divorcing, and John was stood up, at the time.
Daryl was also pursuing someone who wasn’t interested in him
"Everybody is high on consolation". Great first line. Harry, there's an interesting old video to this song. Ok, I'm going to have some consolation now. See ya, love your love for music. Keep it up 👍
Excellent 👍
Gotta live that blue-eyed Philly soul. If you haven’t already, you should check out Sarah Smile. Probably my favorite by these guys. Also Daryl Hall has a show called Live From Daryl’s House. He has other musicians over to his house for a meal and to Jam. Papa Was A Rolling Stone w/ Train would be a good start. It’s a deep rabbit hole.
*Gotta Love
Great show..i reacted to a couple of songs
Hey Harry, nice reaction to Hall and Oats. If I may suggest: Please also check out "Sarah Smile", "Rich Girl", "Out Of Touch". Thank you. Love your channel.
The Philly sound, Todd Rundgren and Hall & Oates. Todd is being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. Enjoy!
Harri, Best Music Reaction for real! The name of your channel is apropos, thank's for your commentary, you make us feel like your talking with us not to us.
Thanx Rob✌🏾
So much better live
dirty loop: follow the light A VOIR ABSOLUMENT
Tempo doesn't change. The build up is crescendos.
When Harri said "i feel like its building to something.." I thought "yep! It is" To one of the best crescendo notes ever by Darryl. Harri knows his music. 😉 H&O have a bunch of great hits. This, i think, is their best.
Great song, it's Oates by the way.
The keyboard in the beginning is called a Rhodes electric piano.
a popular electric piano in the late sixties and early seventies. The Doors and Billy Joel also and many others used this classic unique sounding keyboard.
I messed up the name..its one of my favourite instruments😁
You should check out Baby Come Back by Player. Could easily be the next song in this story.
both John and Daryl sang the song
It sounds to me like a Fender Rhodes electric piano, with a bit of vibrato, likely on the amp, rather than an organ on the intro, Harri, but mox nix, or macht nicht in the big scheme of things...great song and performance, and great choice for a reaction.
The horns and strings deliver somewhat percussive punches later in the song much like an organ comping in -for example- reggae.
Cheers, mate. ;>D
You broke it down real good sir!
@@HarriBestReactions Thank you, Harri, nice of you to say so, but please don't call me sir. All the best, Harri. ;>D
Sara Smile
Great song, if you want to continue this theme with your new favorite ELO, try “It’s Over” from the Out f the Blue album.
Cheers.

Check out Live at Daryl's House.
Would you please do Jerry Garcia band. Let it rock 1982. Lots of history to this song 😀
React to "It ain't over til it's over"....Lenny Kravitz...
"Rich Girl"
Try One on One! It’s gotta real vibe!🤟🏻✌🏻
Actually lead vocals on this song are done by John Coates with Daryl doing backing and harmonies
I don't know 8f someone answered your question of why pay the devil but I'll answer it anyway. The price the devil will charge is extremely high. By saying he'll pay the devil he is saying that for what he wants, there is no price too high. He'll pay anything..
Adult Education is good too.
The devil can get you anything it'll just cost your soul
