      Ryuzaki Raiga if you take Debian, change a few things around, and call it, say, “Devuan”, don’t turn around and start yelling “Look! A whole new OS that’s not Debian”
      Just because android runs on Linux, Ubuntu runs on Linux, Ubuntu is not android, and this new trash runs on Linux does not mean this is not android.
      Those all have a common shared component, called Linux, sure. But in this case, there’s another shared component that Ubuntu doesn’t have: Being based off android/AOSP.
      I’ll give KaiOS credit for not just being a fork of android. It’s it’s own thing. Still Linux, not android.
      The same way Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, and Gentoo are all still Linux, Android, this trash, every other new trash mobile OS are all still AOSP. I don’t say Debian isn’t Linux because it’s got extra stuff.
      Take Linux, write your own mobile os on top of it, and sure, it’s “Not Android”
      Take Android, change the launcher, icons, and browser, strip out the play store and throw your own market in, then call it ShellTwist OS or whatever, it’s still android.
      Take a Corolla, swap the seats, put on a steering wheel cover, it doesn’t stop being a Corolla

    • @funposting8912
      @funposting8912 5 лет назад +28

      Ryuzaki Raiga what you’re describing is distorts. We don’t say Ubuntu and mint are different operating systems, because there isn’t enough of a difference, and because they share a kernel and coreutils, we play it safe and say they’re different distros. Distributions. They’re the same operating system distributed with different packages and software.
      With android, we call these ROMs. Motorola, samsung, xiaomi, they all take Android, bundle their own packages and software, and distribute them. Google gives out vanilla android roms, people make their own roms, and so do people like LineageOS. Take Android, bundle packages and software, and distribute it. It’s not enough to call it a different OS, they share a kernel, virtual machine, and coreutils. Rather than the Linux “distro”, we call them “ROMs”.
      If someone made a Linux distro and started saying it was a whole new OS even though it shared 99.5% of its code with every other distro, or didn’t even have any unique code itself, it was just a bundle of other peoples software, if they tried calling that a brand new OS they’d be ridiculed off the internet.
      When you take AOSP, do the same, claim it’s your own OS, I’m also gonna ridicule you off the internet until you get your head some fresher air and admit it’s just an android ROM.

    Puffin OS is android.
    Android go is android.
    Puffin OS is just android without the play store and just has web app versions of the Puffin browser which has already existed for a long time.
    This OS is a joke.
    At least KaiOS is it's own os, for a feature phone OS it is really good IMO.
    Although if you just want a cheap phone, I would still get an android phone, look on the used market for old flagships. They may be slow or outdated, but they can still run most android apps decently and is the best option IMO.

My nokia s40 phone could do much more with 64mb ram and had games with better graphics. The games on kaios are so pathetic and lagging that symbian s30 inbuilt games felt faster. Kaios is a mockery of feature phones. The only way kaios can succeed is if they port the entire os to use webassembly and compile all apps to webassembly. By doing that they could still keep the spying but do it efficiently.

    • @biplabkumarghosh6300
      @biplabkumarghosh6300 3 года назад

      Yeah, but the fundamental way the apps behave on a Android Go and Puffin's Android is different. A significant portion of the processing happens on Puffin's servers. See you won't see much of a difference when opening light sites like twitter but if you open a heavy gaming site like Prospectors which need a lot of processing, you will get the difference

      Not only Android, Opera Mini existed before that, on Java capable feature phones. It was able to render full websites with AJAX capabilities and all on a phone the likes of Sony Ericsson K750 in my particular case, which was unimaginable with other phone browsers at the time. Heck, WAP was still a thing!
      Sadly, Opera went down the drain recently, they both crippled their desktop browser and are now employing some fishy practices from privacy standpoint.
      On a side note, while it doesn't help as a replacement for Mini, I'd recommend Vivaldi to anyone who is an Opera user still, or who ran away from it after Opera 15 launched. It's made by some of the people who left Opera ASA once everything started to go bad and is the closest thing to the glory days of Opera 12.

And really software updates aren't important if the experience isn't personalized and you have full control of your smartphone in the first place with iOS.

Having said that, why would ios updates be free since they've already taken your money? And, 2 years of android updates is enough for android phones because even android m has more functions and usability than latest iphone xs.

      I can't speak to the intentions of this particular company, but remote browsing isn't entirely crazy, even 3g Kindles access the internet through Amazon's servers, but you do have to address privacy concerns.
      When I travel I often end up with poor internet connections, often with really high latency connections (I've had pings over ten seconds). This makes many modern webpages impossible to load as the initial page load has none of the content and you'd need 5 back and forths with the server where you're loading scripts that load other scripts that eventually load the content... by which time the server times you out. I've had to resort to using my digital ocean VPS to access pages like this, when all I wanted to do was read the restaurant menu.
      This says more about shitty silicon valley developers assuming things about internet connectivity, but if there was a way to self-host a trusted version of a remote browser someplace that you control-yet has a much more stable internet connection-, that may be very interesting indeed.

    Great to see the two of you working together on this special project.
    I am not a techie, but I do understand the pitfalls of having a cheap-a__ __ phone.
    The only thing saving my LG Sunset is the Android system. Sometimes the phone just won' t work well. But thanks to user websites I can sometimes figure out another way to do the tasks I need to do.
    I don't know what I could do with an even cheaper phone and Puffin. It seems to me it would be better to go directly to the desired server instead of having Puffin as the middleman.
    Also, it sounds that if Puffin would crash, I would be left with no alternatives. And the thought of Puffin disappearing with all of my data is just unsettling. Puffin is not ready for prime time anywhere, but especially when what some of us in America might consider to be a cheap phone might represent several month's wages for someone in a developing country.
    When you also consider that due to the infrastructure issues many developing countries have, the person wo has the phone might be a lifeline for a community. I don't see how Puffin would be an effective or reliable system for the very people who need it the most.
    Although you guys didn't compare these two systems on an apples to apples basis, what was presented about the
    Kaios syestem sounded better to me.
    Even with it's shortcomings, because it shares some traits with Android it may provide a basis for both systems to develop and improve as opposed to leaving a customer with nothing.
    In fact, Android would be wise to work with Kaios to develop logical links to more advanced Android phone systems as the targeted customers become wealthier and seek better phones. I don't know how they would get wealthier, but for those who do, it seems that switching from Kaios to real Android would be more logical than trying to go from Puffin to Android if that's even possible.

    Technical explanation to what Puffin OS is doing:
    JS Apps/PWA Apps have one big flaw. Basicly you're downloading a huge pool of data everytime you open the page.
    Obviously this is slow, because the app also because all this code has to be executet on your device.
    So their are various technics to speed this up. The most comen being prerendering. I changes the behavior when you first load the app. You only get HTML (Basicly a static Page) on the inital load. And after the page is visible for you it will load the rest of the page, and make everything interactive. So everything after the inital Page load can't be speed up anymore. On top of that many pages like Wikipedia for example. Won't see a speed difference at all because their page is just not a single page application.
    But this is also a standard step for most PWAs. So if you ask me Puffin OS is a complet scam. They make you belive that they did something greate but in the end they use existing technolegy. And sell it as their own inovation. I think about an hour is all you need to make a standard Web App, to something like the ones Published in the Puffin App Store. Ofcourse if you own the page which should support this you will be even faster (litteraly 5 min process).

I mean your phone has to talk to a remote browser every time a new image is loaded on the screen... whereas a local browser can keep a large cache. (If a remote browser can send you a large cache, then what’s the point? Your local hardware needs to put the cache together again defeating the purpose.)

    If I got it right. Puffin OS makes display & rendering of data faster as it fetch and pre-render data ahead from it's remote "web-service". However, it doesn't necessarily means that interactions of a 'rendered' display would be intuitive and faster as point-to-point interactions of the user will still depends on the device hardware, and the more interaction happens, the more it will have fetching and refetching of data - which in a nutshell is more of a latency issue than the device hardware.

    • @yvrelna
      @yvrelna 5 лет назад +1

      Nope, not at all. Firefox OS renders all apps locally, and they use progressive apps techniques so apps can essentielle run a webserver locally to avoid reaching out to another server except for updates and content.
      Puffin renders the apps on Puffin's servers and serve a static version of the app locally, making them closer to Opera Mini/Turbo than to Firefox OS.

      Thats not going to happen soon. The market is set, at Max you could have success in cheap phones for developing countries. and even there i doubt it would work out. Ubuntu touch is dead, Firefox os failed as well and even Microsoft failed, Sailfish os failed. And for the developing market, there is now android now...
      And there is no way a new os could enter the market in Western markets anytime soon.
      Besides that windows did cost money for the manufacturers, the main reason it failed was apps. They entered late, anyone had iOS or android, therefore few users got one. Few users means only few apps. And without apps, nobody buys the phone. And without anyone buying the phone, nobody ports apps. A perfect vicious circle. Kinda sad, I liked windows phone, but you now, never got one because you've guessed it - Apps....
      MAYBE this could change in a decade or two, but for now there is no chance anyone could compete.
