I am going to make my own post but I am so glad to see others appreciate as much as I do what he is teaching us. Wendy your words are perfectly said and I couldn't agree more.
Hello Tony, As Sinatra's song says '...if you are young at heart'. Never is late to be doing things that entairtain ourselves. Keep on doing your best!
Mahalo for the tutorial. I don't sew...yet. But after mentioning to friend (who restores old sewing machines as a hobby) that I would like to learn how, he gifted me with a 1970's Kenmore 158 that he rebuilt and painted. So after seeing this welting tutorial (and your list of videos!) I'm going to jump in and start learning. I plan to start with reupholstering a drummers stool with diamond pleat and welting. Thanks for the inspiration!
Cechaflo, I want to give you a very sincere thank you for your time to share your experience and teaching us the "old school" way to create from the beginning. You are a master at what you do and we learn so much watching your videos. You don't make things good, you make them perfect! It is an art and gift you have that I am trying to learn, and you are the best. Thank you so much for giving to us so we can learn and continue this beautiful tradition of creating from material like an artist creates on canvas. I not only watch (of course subscribed), but study how you work your magic. What you produce is amazing and sharing to teach others, we are extremely appreciative. You are indeed are a Master Craftsman.
You are the most generous man, knowledge which you share is priceless. Thank you. Without sounding your lessons have given me more talkative than all my teachers.
I really appreciate your kind remarks and words of gratitude! ...Upholstery is mostly learnt by using 'visual methods'...just, watch, understand and learn. To accentuate this knowledge, practice is the best master...what I mean is do, undo until getting what we want to do!
I would like to thank you because today when I sewed the arms and seating of the chair I'm doing in the course of tapestry, I used this technique all you show in the video and everything worked out. The arms and seat had curves, corners and living (piping). Thank you very much for helping us. Big hug from his friend in Brazil. Balbino de Jesus.
Balbino de Jesus Hi Balbino, First, thanks for being a very grateful man! I feel happy and satisfied, because my videos are useful...besides, the techniques and methods, I am using to teach are practical and effective...Great!
+Cechaflo Hello, I am a big fan of yours. I really love to watch your videos. I don't have sewing machine, I don't have leather but I am learning for the near future. I wish, I could be your student. You're a true artist. Regards, Hamid Khan. ( This profile picture is of my son :) )
Thanks for video. I have to learn this for faux leather bag and searched on the internet but i couldn't find anywhere.. finally someone show how to sew. Great job.

peggyt1243 Thanks for your valuable comment ! ...As you can see, upholstery is not so difficult as it seems...a good foundation will take us to success. I hope in a near future, we will be together to carry out real size upholstery projects.
Your tutorials are wonderful! I have watched many several times. Question: should piping always be positioned right on the top panel...I see many car Seats where the piping is lower than the top of the panel. (I am probably not describing this well). I like this "look" and wonder how I can achieve a straight consistent piping line....just cut the top pattern piece bigger? Thank you in advance. You are a true craftsman!
+Candace Barker Thanks so much for watching my videos! .. I clearly understand the question...as a matter of fact, piping can be positioned in a lower position...the ´piping' should follow the line traced all around the seat base. If the 'top plate/panel is going to be one flat píece, then, it would be necessary some 'stretching' in the corners while lowering the position of 'main top panel' and also achieving the desired lower alignment following the marked/drawn line...to keep in place the material some 'upholstery pins/skewers' are useful...and of course, you're right this 'top pattern' should be a little bigger...to do a precise sewing, do not forget the 'reference sewing notches' for the 'main panel' and 'long lateral panel/skirt'. If the main plate is going to be sectioned in three or four parts, then, the pieces of the corners should be molded to get a lower position. At any moment, I'd like to do a seat this way...it's real upholstery on car seats. I hope it helps!
Hello, firstly thank you so much for all your help and advice, it is a true gift. May I ask a question, when sewing a piped panel to a top layer, I am finding that the piping stitching is showing, especially around corners. Do you have any advice on how to stop this? what am I doing wrong. I am using the correct size piping foot on my walking foot Seiko sewing machine. Thank you again. Carol
Sorry for delay in answering. 1. The 'piping foot' should be the size according to the 'pipe size' we're using in order to get a 'close piping outcome' 2. To attach piping to the first panel it is advisable the use of a thin thread same related color of the material...a thinner needle is also useful. 3. To get a 'close piping', I mean to attach the 'piped panel' to the 'top layer, the 'second sewing' should go one milimeter inside. 4. Try to regulate the machine for a shorter stitch to avoid those 'clashing views'...not too short, because could tear off the material. 5. Don't forget a 'thighter thread tensions'
It is really cool that you show your techniques! Just one question: you sew first your piping to the side panel and then both to the main panel. That means that the side panel has been sewn twice... Is this not a problem because of the holes? The side panel has a lot of holes and the faux leather is not so resistant, isn't it? I am wondering if it would not be better (not easier haha) to sew all the panel in one shot?
Interesting observations! The method I am showing on this video is more educational intended to car seats manufacture than cover itself. It is more a way of training for beginners. As you said, the procedure could be done at one go. Yes, you are right. This method could be used in certain cases when doing simple designs such as flat cushions. Many years ago I used to do it attaching the three pieces together(main plate, side panel and piping strip with pipe included) when I worked sewing buses' seats and furniture cushions. You are also right about big holes on vinyl seams. To obviate this issue it should be sewn with a thin needle and longer stitches. The last 'closing sewing' should be sewn with slightly shorter stitches and thicker needle if necessary.

Great tutorial again! :) So, can piping be done with a normal foot, or like my machine a foot for double needle? Or is a special pipng foot necessary? Thank you.

Cechaflo thank’s for the reply. I’m using a Brother 797 with a 5/32 piping foot for a 3mm cord but it doesn’t behave too well. gracias, para mi usted es un referente, estoy haciendo un curso de tapicería de sillones, ahora me decidí y voy a comprar una triple transporte, mire todos sus videos!
+Elivanelima Maria Muy buena pregunta!
Interesting question. As my English speaking is not so good I have opted for not to do it because I could cause confusion instead. But, I am not stopped...I'm training more to improve my speaking. Besides, to my videos I use a 'visual method'. The interested person would learn just by watching. Many people have found this method effective.

What sizes stitches do you recommend when attaching the boxing to the main top panel?
3 to 4 mm are enough. Not too short nor too long. Standard needles:110(18), 120(19), 130(21), 140(22) Depending on thickness of material.

There are three standard measures for 'pfaff welting foot' : 1/8" = 3 mm approx. , 3/16" and 1/4"

Cechaflo thank’s for the reply. I’m using a Brother 797 with a 5/32 piping foot for a 3mm cord but it doesn’t behave too well. If you are not right on top of it and going really slow it likes to get out of it’s channel and starts sewing through the cord. Being able to do that last stitch 1mm in with the same piping foot just seems like magic to me haha.
It seems you are using the wrong size foot. It is too tight. It is necessary to consider the vinyl/leather thickness not only the single 'piping cord'. If we are using a 3mm cord size therefore the 'foot carved channel' should be 2 mm more wider approx considering the thickness of material on both sides of round cord.
I had the same issue before and I solved the problem widening/sanding off the excess with a mototool.
It would be much better to purchase a new one with 'carved channel' wider.
👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you, Professor
I am glad to share some upholstery tips!
You are welcome anytime!
Great video, thanks. But how do you attach the bottom??
Thanks so much for appreciating this video!
As a basic video it only showed the use of píping and how a main panel is attached to a lateral panel. If thinking on how to affix it to a bottom base, it could be a wood plate and it would be fastened by using staples or upholstery tacks. Or it could be fastened to a metal plate by using glue, hog rings, etc.
You are welcome anytime!
The best ....
May I ask what model your Pfaff is?
It looks like a 145 but I can't get a good look.
It's an industrial Pfaff 1245-706/47.
Do you not allow for the stretch of the fabric and make the top plate smaller than the foam size?
The measures of sample cover were taken from real measures of foam cushion. If I would do a real project I would wrap around a 1/4" thick foam to get a better fitting.
What you said is right, to get nicer fitting for the cushion. In that case I would cut a bigger single thick foam 1/4" addition included all around.
Cechaflo so if I don’t have extra foam should I subtract 1/4 inch all round from the top plate?
Yes, of course you could. Otherwise you could use dacron material all over to get more padding or the extra foam all around.
can feature some chair, sofa reupholterer job as my reference- and the like.
I think so.
Tell me please where did you buy such piping?
I'm located in Mexico and I bought that stuff at a local upholstery supplier.

+Elivanelima Maria Muy buena pregunta!
👍
Thanks for kind remark!
Very cool but why it is mute
Interesting question. As my English speaking is not so good I have opted for not to do it because I could cause confusion instead. But, I am not stopped...I'm training more to improve my speaking.
Besides, to my videos I use a 'visual method'. The interested person would learn just by watching. Many people have found this method effective.
