    As a Chilean, I must say Japan managed the damages from the 2011 earthquake quite well considering it was a 9.1 magnitude. Compared to the 8.8 that hit my country the year prior and people panicked and started looting.
    A mega-earthquake would surely be a heavy blow to Japan. No country is immune to them. But considering this precedent, I trust the Japanese people will be able to handle this.

      Fun fact: we did some drills with Japan after the 2010/2011 earthquakes so in case an earthquake occurred near Chile, we would give Japan a heads up and they could prepare for the following tsunami! Very interesting how seismically similar our countries are.

    • @feiryfella
      @feiryfella Месяц назад +8

      They prepared for the wronh earthquake tho. Their defences were based on the 1960 tsunami, not the 1000 year tsunami that occurred. They did a good job with what they had, but their defences were half the size they needed and their evaucuation points not far or high enough. They've learned though!

      That’s a culture difference because in Japan a huge collectivist culture is apparent. People are taught from a young age to be considerate of others and to help the community. Taking it too far with elements that make it look like 1984. Not falling in line will cause you to be ostracized. Dividing people and creating a society that cannot rebel.
      Whereas in the West, we see individualism. From a young age people are taught that the world revolves around the individual and they shape their life. Again we see it going too far with people being selfish and society being divided with everyone branching off doing their own thing.
      All must strike a balance between collectivism and individualism. Balance creates harmony in a society.

    Earthquakes can cause tsunamis, and also if you EVER see the tide at the beach suddenly retreat back away from the shore, it means a tsunami is on the way in a really short time! It means everyone NEEDS to get as far inland and preferably above sea level as possible. Also after the first wave of a tsunami, I'm pretty sure it's followed by more waves. ( I don't know if it ALWAYS comes in multiple waves in a smaller one, but i don't think it's worth going to the beach immediately after just in case.) stay safe and take the right precautions.

      Yes there can be more than 1 wave and an after shock can also trigger tsunamis.
      It’s worth looking up how they are created, how they travel and how the ocean floor affects them, the way water behaves is really interesting and scary.

    • @bonogiamboni4830
      @bonogiamboni4830 Месяц назад +12

      @@hybrid9mm Agreed. Iirc the basic version is that the shock causes a high energy ripple which results in a very low (a few cm) and very fast wave deep in the ocean where the ocean floor is waaay below the surface of the water, then as the wave goes towards the surface the floor raises up gradually until it eventually reaches sea level at the shore. This causes the wave to slow down, but it keeps its high energy so it moves more water instead, becoming bigger. Not a hydrophysicist or anything, this is just the explaination i remember.

    As someone living in the Pacific Northwest, I totally understand the fear. We are due for a magnitude 9 quake anytime in the next few decades known as the Cascadia mega-thrust quake, and the devastation from the tsunamis and shaking would be beyond belief. Our region is not nearly as prepared as Japan is either since until the early 2000s people incorrectly believed the Northwest was seismically inactive, and a lot of our infrastructure has not been designed to withstand a mega quake like this. It will. This is the reality of the Pacific Ring of Fire. You can read up on the 7.8 one that happened in the Philippines. That was notorious for its length and violence which eventually led to a really bad volcanic eruption in the region (and all the smaller quakes that happened during that period).
      The frequency of the quakes happening in Japan at such high magnitudes has been very alarming. The issue here is that there seems to be no outlet for these quakes after so many of them. It will come so it's best to be prepared.

      Unfortunately this is the reality.
      I live in Scandinavia, we don't get natural disasters at all, we might get a really heavy rain fall, or some really hot summer days, but nothing more then that..
      To me it seems almost impossible for someone to experience earthquakes more then once in their life, tsunamis seems extreme and tornadoes crazy.. But the reality is that this happens very often in places that are unfortunately very prone to these kinds of things.. I cannot imagine what its like, but i do understand that it does happen, we can only hope that Japan is prepared and gets through it with minimum damage, and if we have the funds, we can financially support them when it happens.
      (Bonus: We actually had an earthquake in Denmark where i live.. at 06 in the morning, i slept through it, it was barely noticeable like a phone vibrating softly once. This was so uncommon everyone was talking about it and what they where doing and how they noticed it.. That's how uncommon it is here..)

    Important PSA: DURING the shaking, do not try to use the stairs! There are many incidents of people falling through the stairs BECAUSE the earth is still moving. Use the emergency exits and go down with precaution (do not run), an aftershock might hit while you are evacuating. Just, don't, run.
    A related note about the shaking, the "seismic intensity scale" or "japanese intensity scale" is not like the "Magnitude" number you often see. "Magnitude" is like the kilotons of a bomb, is about the energy released, an intensity scale is about how it will feel in a particular place: will your lamp on your nightstand will fall? Will you be able to stand upright? etc. At an intensity of 6+ (there are 5-, 5+, 6- and 6+) is just impossible to stand up. That is what the scale tries to convey, it is a scale meant to convey danger to normal people (regardless of how deep, far, or powerful the earthquake was).

    • @sdlion7287
      @sdlion7287 Месяц назад +13

      It is important to also read and apply the advice of preparedness guidelines. At an intensity of even 4, objects might fall around your house: a TV might hit you while sleeping if you sleep close to it; or boxes or heavy stuff put on a high shelf. Be aware of your everyday surroundings and change them to improve your safety / reduce accidents.

    • @Venicilia

      @@sdlion7287 It's personally pretty weird to hear that a 4.0 can make things fall over, as we get the occasional 3.5 where I currently live in Quebec, and you rarely notice them more than it seeming like a semi truck passed by your house.
      Thanks for the info though, I'm moving to Yamaguchi next month for at least a year, so its something I'll also pass on to my class mate who is going with me.

    • @sdlion7287
      @sdlion7287 Месяц назад +17

      @@Venicilia it is important to make clear that the numbers are not interchangeable, they do not represent the same thing.
      Imagine there's an explosion of "3.5" in the other side of the country, you will feel it different compared to if it happens just outside your backyard. But the explosion would still be "3.5", that is Magnitude, a quality of the event itself.
      The japanese escale on the other hand, measures what is felt in a certain place. If that 3.5 explosion happens on the other side of the country, you would have measured "0 intensity" in your house. If that same 3.5 explosion happens in your backyard, it would measure "6- intensity" because it would break your windows. Even if it is still the same "3.5" magnitude.
      This is what I mean with "it's a scale for people". People do not care about an event they cannot feel (a 7.5M earthquake on a different country) but they will care about an earthquake that felt 6+ where their family lives.

    • @NothingXemnas

      You are confusing the Japanese intensity scale (a score) with the Richter scale (logarithmic energy value).
      The Japanese scale is split in levels of danger, in 6 steps subdivided (like a tierlist). The Richter scale is purely mathematical (like a thermometer) and can go above 10, even if it never happened.

Although an earthquake can trigger an eruption if it's greater than magnitude 6 (USGS service), a volcano must be positive to erupt, and not every active volcano is going to explode. The megaquake line stretched from Aceh to Maluku (the tip of Sumatra to Maluku, which if you googled it, it's pretty far), and that includes the entire Java as well. Even though the line is far from land, it could hit us about 7-6 SR inland. Worse if it's at the beach, which from my prediction, is about 8 SR and caused a tsunami as well.
    Even though the Nankai Trough is far, i think everyone will be effected, not just Japan, but to the entire nation that are inside the Ring of Fire.

    I live in Wellington NZ and basically my entire life we have been warned about the massive earthquakes that are due. We have a lot of dangerous fault lines directly through or close to us.
    We don't get as many large ones as Japan and a 9.0 happening anywhere in that area would be felt heavily all over, but any buildings anywhere close would probably be destroyed and then anything along the coast would likely have another tsunami, hills/mountains would have landslides. I know buildings can be made to survive a 9.0 earthquake but I don't think that's standard or a guarantee.

    Who else watched Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 back in the day?
    I haven't been to Japan since 2010 (for a month July-August), but I'd love to go again.
    No matter where I travel I always bring a large backpack for all my luggage and a carry-on sized daypack big enough to fit all the essentials along with the occasional shop find (typically beer).
    Every morning the smaller pack gets packed with a fresh change of clothes, sunscreen, an umbrella, a toothbrush, and a couple of other things like my spare glasses, new contact lenses + cleaning fluid, cash ($100 worth of local currency). Depending on the area and the climate, a pair of durable gloves as well. An extra pair of gloves if I'm already wearing a pair when I head out.
    Wearing a pair of wet and cold gloves is horrendous.
    If you're out and about and you can't get back to your accommodation for whatever reason, it really sucks if you can't even take care of yourself.
    It's not like the thought of an earthquake scares me, but my Japanese teacher back in the day told me about not going to sleep without packing my most important stuff "just in case".
    Always stock your hotel fridge with a bottle of fresh water (unless you really love the chlorinated water from the tap) and a Pocari Sweat - it might literally save the life of yourself or someone else.
    The 2011 earthquake and tsunami could just as well have happened in 2010, you never know.
    9:30 - This kind of information should be printed and handed out to every inbound passenger on every international flight and returned to the flight attendant with a signature.
    I know people are on holiday, but that doesn't really help you when you're knee-deep in a landslide - induced by earthquake, heavy rainfall, etc.

There are also a lot of data why scientists predicting a big Earthquake now, and not sometime else, because if you look into the history the most destructive Earthquakes in Japan happen every 100-120 years, and the last one was in 1946, if I'm not wrong, apart from 2011.

    Hey Joey Indonesia also have same problem but if in Japan you have Nankai in Indonesia we have few of them but Sundanese take special consern from our Indonesian siencetist. That thing has been silence for to long which mean there is possibility that thing have huge potencial energy which could wipe out many coastal cities along southern Javanese and Sumatran island.

    I will be going to Japan early next year and I am pretty worried hearing about this megaquake...
    My brother is telling me not to worry so much because Japan is prepared for the IF.
    But I can't help but worry, especially since I will be going along this quake line,,,

    Please for the name of god change the title, it is unecessery clickbaity and fear mongering, I live in mega qucke issue area, and every 70, 80 to 100 one is happening… Japanese and Japan is always ready, people live as normal and we all know what to do what happens, it is hard for people since issue is warned, the title like this stirrs more panic than needed

    you know these things wont get easier to handle again, climate change is already hear and extreme weather phenomens will get more and more common now. good job politics and humanity btw... crazy how we get here with us basically watching on the sidelines saying "ahhh as of right now it doesnt matter to me as i am not the one who has to deal with it currently", problems for later right? noooo.

    I was in Japan during the Fukushima quake. I was in Osaka but everything shook for a full minute. When we saw that the epicenter of an earthquake that long and which felt strong to us, was so far away, we knew it was historic. I am hoping that whatever hits, hits places that aren't populated and creates less damage. At least Japan as a country is relatively prepared for earthquakes but in the end, Mother Nature is very powerful and sometimes there is nothing we can do.

    The thing about the Japanese and their society is that they’re NOT a bunch of jackasses. I have faith that they will survive:

    Having experienced the nightmare that was The Fukushima Earthquake, that alone deterred me from staying in Japan after my military service ended.
    I sure hope and pray y’all are safe over there. Not just because all the things I like are over there, but because of this might be worse than Fukushima, then that’s an experience no one deserves to have to deal with.

    hope everyone takes care and would be a good time to remind everyone of something we do here in my country prepare food(canned food), radio, water, a whistle and other basic necessity stuff you need aside of that south america is and has been warned about also having a very big earthquake happening though doubt as much as Japan since Japan has much more big history with them nonetheless the tsunamis caused by both earthquakes would they happen will be very bad for everyone. again everyone please be safe try to search about how to make a bag with all they things i mentioned earlier and try to learn on how to act in an earthquake.

    I currently live a couple hours away from Miyazaki. The day of the earthquake we were having a pretty big storm (it’s been thundering a lot lately) and the earthquake hit at the same time as lightning did. Was quite a surprising experience. Earthquake was also one of the strongests I’ve felt while I’ve been in Japan. I also remember feeling the aftershocks, specially one that woke me up at dawn. Pretty scary, honestly.

    Californian here. We've been here going about our lives while waiting for "The Big One" for 35 years now. I live 10 miles from Napa, when in 2014 a 6.0 earthquake struck around 3AM. When the shaking stopped I just fell back asleep.

      Lucky, haha. I was living near the epicenter when it happened, my dresser fell over and nearly crushed our cat.
      My younger brother was sleeping in a different spot on the couch than usual that night, if he had been in his usual spot then the heavy furniture which wasn't strapped like it was supposed to be would have smashed him.
      I was in high school when it happened.
