    I enjoy overnight oats many different ways-lots of different kinds and combinations of mix-ins. My favorite go-to has almond milk, plain Greek yogurt, chia seeds, (real) maple syrup, and peanut butter. On the morning of, I’ll grab a second jar and throw in some frozen fruit and halfway defrost it in the microwave-bringing the two jars separate. Then at lunch I dribble the frozen fruit (fully defrosted by now) into the overnight oats jar as I eat so there’s a little of the fruit mixture on top of each spoonful rather than mixed in. Using the chia seeds, I can easily make in the morning if I forgot the night before and it’s perfectly set by lunch in my lunch bag. I usually make two at a time so one is always handy to grab. One of my favorite ingredients is cherries-fresh, dried, or frozen will do!!
    From this video, I’m excited to try steel-cut oats, also maybe (sparingly) tahini(?), and, from one of your commenters, I’d like to try pre-toasting the oats. For those in the U.S., I’ve found Trader Joe’s rolled oats way better than the most popular brand typically found in grocery stores-the TJ oats are, like, cleaner (?) less dusty/powdery so the final product is like more each individual clean grain rather than a starchier mash-up.
    A warning I learned the hard way-I kept wondering why I found little floaty dark spots in my maple syrup “jugs.” I found out later (from a RUclips content creator) that you’re supposed to keep it in the fridge to prevent this, it’s mold-yikes (I had been keeping in cupboard).
    I’m curious why you didn’t show chia seeds as an option? I love the “magic” of them in my creations.

    Since I started keeping plain Greek yogurt in my fridge as a staple (for overnight oats), I accidentally found out that it is a great ingredient to drop in, on, around just about anything!! Great big dollop in pancake batter and muffin or cake batter, substitute for sour cream in or on top of anything. Also, my kids like flavored/sweetened yogurt varieties for snack/desert/breakfast, etc., but those are too sweet for me, but I found mixing the sweet/flavored yogurts half/half with the plain Greek yogurt is a great way to cut the sweetness/fat content.

    Refika (and lovely crew)!!!! What a wonderful demonstration video which clearly illustrates the principles of overnight oat treats! We have a loved one with lactose issues so years ago I started to make these without dairy but with applesauce. The applesauce gives the sweetness, fiber and other nutritional elements and also provides the moisture. And, for Refika's PTSD, the applesauce doesn't discolor. We would use things that we can get here easily, like almonds and dried cranberries, but pistachios and pomegranate seeds would be lovely, too. At any rate, thanks for your weekly videos, they are the highlight of my Saturday morning coffee routine. Much love and take care!!

    Regula, you mentioned cracked oats. Is that what we call steel cut oats in the US? Will steel cut oats absorb enough liquid overnight to be able to eat? They don’t need to cook? These look great!

    • @Refika
      @Refika  6 дней назад +2

      Yes, steel-cut oats work! They'll be chewier, but soaking longer or using warm liquid helps. Enjoy! 😊

    Refika, the Ayurvedic medicine says that fruits should not be mixed with dairy because as you said, the milk curdles in contact with fruit once we ingest them (and the temperature of the body is high). What's your point on this? Thanks

    I love overnight oats. I don't know why I can't eat regular oatmeal, but I can't, but I have no problem with overnight oats. I use grated apple as my sweetener - sorry you've been traumatized by apples! I understand, for me its strawberry yogurt or honestly, strawberry flavored anything. - Much love to you all.
