BRO this is the most underrated channel I've encountered in a while, I'm really enjoying the more in-depth reviews of these games, since we often just... sorta take 'em for granted. Great stuff!
48:35 Supposedly, according to Chris Pratt when talking about being cast as Mario for illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, when he thought about what was the first Mario game he ever played, he specifically was referring to VS Super Mario Bros. Arcade as his first Mario game.
Its honesty a shame that you don't have more subscribers, I can tell how much effort you put into these and u should keep making the great content and u will eventually make it big. Definitely earned a sub from me :)
The hype around the first Super Mario Bros was obviously how revolutionary it was at the time. If it randomly came out in the modern day it wouldn’t be regarded so highly but neither would the first light bulb if it came out today. People look back fondly for how it made them feel at the time. The game was mind blowing back then
Greatest thing about Super Mario Brothers NES was.......THE CHALLENGE! We kids wanted the challenge, and we got it. I am uncertain now why it is upsetting, or not fun. The ease of modern games, even in my fav series like Mario, Final Fantasy, and Zelda......they are far easier to go through than in the day. It would be nice to have the difficulty back, without having to have to select it in hard mode. (Mostly unlocked AFTER a completed game) That being said, the reviews you give for the Mario games are really amazing. The analysis is definitely as close to spot on as possibly can. Love listening to the videos.
Oh thank goodness. When I played the arcade version, I was so confused about what on Earth I was experiencing. I had the SNES version as a kid and had become quite good at it, so my sudden knee-capping and ineptitude was confusing. Glad to understand what was really going on. Kneecapping warp pipes and mixing in The Lost Levels...sheesh.
Great videos, I'm loving these as a companion to my series playthrough! Btw, the brown vs orange thing is because most gba games got made with waaaay brighter colors to counter the lack of backlight, so when emulating them usually you need to enable some kinda 'color correction' setting to get gba games to look how they're supposed to instead of Bright As Hell
Was the GBA Mario Bros. released before the GBA SP was out, or before it became the designed-for system? The backlight (and lack thereof with the original GBA) led developers to change colors because of how dark orange without a backlight shows up when front-lit. I loved this in-depth overview, amazing work!
Re: the “vs” edition - the idea of that edition was in fact to suck in quarters, and make a game over happen as quickly as possible so that the player would either pay another quarter to continue or to give up and let a new player play. Of course they had to change the levels to me it challenging for people who had lots of experience playing the home version. I wonder if the arcade unit had options to change the difficulty of the game - many arcade games had options via DIP switches inside or via an operator menu to change aspects of the game to make it harder or easier - change the number of starting lives or how often a 1up happens for example. Great series btw! I’m really enjoying reading up on all the games I used to play! 😊
It does have a few options, they can make it take up to 250 coins for an extra life, make the timer go faster, give you less lives to start with and continue with, and set how many real coins per credit to make it cost more. I played through the whole thing in an emulator (on my wii!) a couple months ago. It's pretty brutal. Some of the levels were later reused in The Lost Levels...
You have to realize that Vs Mario, Wrecking Crew, Mario Bros, and the Donkey Kong series built an X-Factor that help make SMB seen as a masterpiece: Meta Environment. You might think that's just hype and thus nostalgia and you wouldn't be entirely wrong but it's something you had to be there to get. Early NES games were designed knowing and sometimes to exploit the community of kids. We would talk about all these games, giving each other hints and challenges. Some games when you did so well you could send the company a picture of it and they'd send you iron on patches. If you had a first, you'd become a big deal on the playground. Think about the impact Markiplier has had and remember that it's well trod territory. This was pioneering country. That energy from the community is what encouraged us to figure out enough of the game to turn it into our masterpiece, and frankly after all the single stage games we had to play with, it was mind blowing. It's a simple matter of what was a Masterpiece at the time using a community that isn't there anymore that kept the excitement and fun at a high pitched thrum became just nostalgia to people that lack all that and are in essence playing alone.
The All Stars version instead calls into question whether he'll be successful, so it was probably meant to mean that from the beginning. It was just phrased poorly.
I never got super into the first mario until i picked up the 35th anniversary game and watch. I love it now, it's reallt great. The physics are odd, specially if you've played any of the follow ups, but once you get used to them the game feels really satisfying to play.
I think the different colors of the re-releases of the NES version are because the NES doesn't have a specific RGB color palette. Thus, games would have different colors depending on the CRT they were displayed on, and emulators can use different color palettes
Awesome video from such a small youtuber. Kind of missed out on a lot of nintendo games growing up so ive been getting into them so I was trying to figure out all the different releases. Might check out the GBA version because i have a ds.
This game was so awesome in the 80's coming from Atari games to Nintendo it was amazing. I was like10 when i played Mario for the first time and I was blown away. My family was not close at all and when we got the Nintendo and played mario we were all engaged and just playing together as a family. Some of my favorite childhood memories was playing the first Mario.
Did you make the megalovania part on the startup image that you didn't like and wanted to burn? I enjoyed hearing that and it caused a chain reaction that involved me liking, subscribing, and commenting. Lol
I think I got the note layout from an Animal Crossing town tune that I found online and recreated it here. Since both music creators are pretty similar I got basically the same result.
@@PixelPowerstar That was from Animal Crossing? I've never played any of those games, so I wouldn't recognize it lol. Undertale is on my top 5 games list, so thats why it caught my attention. I really enjoy you content, so keep making it and I'll keep watching it.
what impresses me most about this video is the editing of footage, even to where you're switching back and forth between original and remake in the same area of the game. it's a lot of fun to watch. Mario games to me always seem like the "perfect" tech demo of their respective consoles. SMB is for NES, SMW is for SNES, NSMB is DS =, Galaxy is Wii, etc. Yeah other games exist, but Mario games always have this smooth and slickness about them where the developers know exactly what the console can do and how they can make it do that thing.
The whole parenthesis around maybe is all up to interpretation. Although I originally thought the same thing that you did where they’re trying to make the fact that Mario is the good guy ambiguous, in reality they’re saying maybe as in maybe you can help Mario become the hero if you finish the game.
Well 10 points for wishing that the GBC version of smb did had better graphics because i was wishing that too (why adding sooo much extra content to make it more commercially appealing but not adding 16bit like graphics to it,in such case i might have played that version all day, About the gba port, instead of emulating the nes version on it,they should,ve ported the snes version to it instead.
You helped me gain some newfound appreciation for the original Mario bros, because for me personally I was hugely impressed by Contra one by comparison, and that came out just two years later. (more specifically the Japanese version with enhanced visuals and cutscenes) But you have some pretty solid points about the game managing to stretch its run time without feeling excessively repetitive, one of the best things about Mario 1 is how well it uses its limited enemy variety for all these different scenarios. Also, nice work is always covering the other versions, I didn't know the deluxe version had so much content, it's a shame we never got the best of both worlds in spite how well the original sold. The only things this video was missing are a few corrections and time stamps for the categories. Great work.
From 7:45 - 9:52 the music and sounds were WAY too loud and abrupt. I had to skip past this whole section to spare my ears. Also turn down volume before 43:56, trust me
Personally l’m not too high on this game, the colors and how big Mario feels are not appealing to a casual gamer like me. However the sound fx, music, nostalgia and chill vibe you get playing the game saves it. This game is much more fun playing with friends and family taking turns with the controller for me, that’s how I got into the game and that’s what kept me playing it. To answer the question this game is a simple beauty, gotta keep in mind when the game came out, it’s just iconic and it’s hard to explain because the name of the game speaks for itself, who hasn’t played Super Mario Brothers? Great video, I love how in depth this video is for every topic you go through. Personally I feel most first installments of video game franchises are quite bland due to a smaller budget and not having as big of a fan base but they become a multi game franchise for a reason and all have their charm.

Extraordinarily underrated channel man, these reviews are very informative! Subbed
Your channel really deserves more visibility
Calling Toad a scumbag earned you a sub from me.
Weirdly enough, I pointed out that exact block in world 8-3 to a friend on how some of the original charm gets lost in the remake
Why is that weird?
@@4504595 the block was "hidden" because there were brick walls across the level and it was hidden in plain sight because of it
I’m going to grab some snacks and watch this soon.
Hope you enjoy it!
one of the greatest reviews of this game on RUclips, great job! Ilove listening to you

super mario bros was nintendo's 'beatles on the ed sullivan show' moment- they had something not only new, but something good too.

Subscribed. Great content
The reason Mario was designed the way he was, with the mustache, was due to sprite limits.
Nah if u had NO fun with this game then its your fault for lacking imagination..this game is goated as hell!

It is, also keep up the good work!

you actually WERE playing as mario in wrecking crew
What a great video
bro the GB/GBC isn't a super nintendo, that'd be the GBA

Now mario sold billions of copies
