  • Sickle cell disease got its name from mutated, misshapen red blood cells.

Sickle cell was the first molecular disease ever and the disease was identified in Chicago in 1910.
Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited blood disorders. In fact, it's the most commonly inherited blood disorder in the world, affecting millions of people worldwide. Once upon a time sickle cell was almost impossible to live with but today, we know a lot more about it and it turns out, something as simple as H2O can help keep it in check.
Seeker sat down with Marsha Treadwell a clinical psychologist and scientists at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, California. Treadwell has worked with the sickle cell community for nearly 20 years.
According to Treadwell, sickle cell disease, the disorder is related to the hemoglobin-the molecule in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to cells throughout the body. Atypical hemoglobin molecules called hemoglobin S distort red blood cells into that sickle or crescent shape.
When red blood cells-which are normally round, like balloons-take on the sickled or misshapen and rigid shape they also become sticky and cause damage throughout the body.
Sickle Cell is common all over the world, but there are populations that are more often affected, such as those originating from Africa, India, the Mediterranean, Middle East and South America.
Find out more about sickle cell, its 4 different forms, sickle cell symptoms, and a potential cure for the disease on this episode of SICK.

Wow. Was not expecting this one. I currently have this disease as I was born with it, and let me tell y'all, IT SUCKS. But not many people know about it. And it doesn't get as much spotlight and medical treatment like other blood disorders or sicknesses in general. The fact that a pretty big channel is doing a whole video specifically on Sickle Cell makes me happy. Thank you guys.

Dwayne Jones I'm sorry that you inherited that. Years ago, when I worked in a navy hospital, I remember a boy that was in the ER and he was in crisis. Apparently, he had a pretty fragile system and was going into crisis a lot for a while. I worked in the lab and when I tested his blood, it was pretty bad. I took the results over to the doctor and I'll never forget how he cried from the pain and begged his mom to let the doctor kill him to put him out of his misery. I'm glad that they're working on it. When I learned about gene editing, sickle cell was the first thing that I thought of. It sounds like a perfect use of such a tool. It would be so great if they could come up with a cure like that.

I actually learned about it in school. I think in 10th grade and again in the 12 th grade in biology when we learned about genetic illnesses. Sadly the symptoms were greatly downplayed. Until I watched this video, I didn't know about the pain and the serious possible complications which is disappointing. I wish you good luck with your illness and hope the development of the new therapies go well, so people like you can get help and don't have to deal with the symptoms anymore.

Stem cells are the cells that don't have a function yet and differentiate to become functional cells. What they will do is edit stem cells to not produce sickle cells and then put them in the bone marrow of the patient. This bone marrow will produce new cells that are ok. The old sickle cells will just die off. At least that's what I understood, I would have to look at the exact procedure to give a more informed response.

I don't like the way she explained it at 4:00. She put the cart b4 the horse. Or the horse was never there in the first place.
    Let me explain.
She said the cut off of air causes pain. What she should have said is the cut off of air starves the body of oxygen and it starts to die which then causes pain.
The pain is a result of a response that is caused by the effects of the oxygen being cut off.
These are important details because every word matters when it comes to science and health.
