Our bodies are pretty incredible, so far we’ve covered what blood is made of, what the different blood types are, and in this Human episode we are exploring how our bodies actually make more blood.
The creation, maintenance, and filtration of blood is a unique process that’s different from our other cells. Luckily, we’ve got some organs and physiology up for the task.
So unlike when our body wants to create new skin cells or stomach cells using mitosis, creating new blood cells requires a bit more work. Red blood cells can’t make direct copies of themselves because they ditch their nuclei as they mature. So your body has to constantly manufacture and eject blood in order to keep the correct number of cells in circulation so you can continue to, well, function.
And this whole process starts in the bone marrow and utilizes a number of different organs along the way including the liver and spleen.
Find out more about how our body continues to produce new blood in this Human.

How Did Red Blood Cells Evolve?

“Ill-conceived blood transfusions go back to the 1600’s (disastrous transfusions of lamb’s blood into humans), and the discovery of the ABO system goes back to the early 1900s. But just how old is blood itself? A picture from the Smithsonian in 2009 showed a red blood cell (RBC) in the soft tissue of a Tyrannosaurus Rex bone from 68 million years ago. But blood cells go back, really far back.”

Hi Seekers, thanks for watching! Want to know more about blood and the human body? Check out our Human playlist here: bit.ly/HUMANplaylist
the cool thing about donating blood is that it is proof that you have no disease hahah, sexual partners come
Thanks. Good stuff. ..so the spleen does have a function after all . ..☺️
😊
how're you gonna hype up Megakaryocytes when you got the cell name "Natural Killer Cells" in the same system yo
Was searching for this comment cause i knew someone would beat me!
amazing name for a punk band
I was thinking the same thing.
with cytokines,,,,
Me studying trying to be productive.
Seeker : hey want to know how blood form?
Me : hell yeah!
YOU: Wanting to be productive, posting nonsense on RUclips.
EVERYONE ELSE: Shaking their head, going "tsk tsk tsk."
😂😂🤣🤣
@@JohnVKaravitis you and I are same
Technically this is studying, you are learning about blood, which is a lot more complex than it might seem at first.
@@adityapratapsingh2518 he never said otherwise but ok, weird flex but ok
What blows my mind is this is just the process for making blood. There are thousands similarly complicated processes going simultaneously in the body. Amazing.
Underrated comment. Excellent observation. We sometimes take our body for granted
Hey Seeker, are your animators also phlebotomists?
Because there was a lot of blood drawn in this video.
Shut up my boy
🥁 badumtss 😂😂
Master Therion omg
😅😂🤣🤣😂🤣
You donate a pint of blood and are a hero...
I donate a 5 litre bottle of blood and get arrested.
Why?
Not his blood!
darah gw unlimited
I understandu
Yeah, don’t bring the blood in a bucket or a large pale, they really don’t like that.
You know your body is amazing but I'm always amazed at how intricate the systems for everything are, good job.
This is perfect, I just donated hours ago
How much money do they pay or is just for free ?
Omg!! You’re such a hero! Don’t donate and talk about it. So tacky.
@@edward2364 just free for red cross, it will make you feel refreshed
Why would you need to get paid for something which is gonna save people's lives I think knowing that is more than money can cost

*MITOCHONDRIA IS THE POWER HOUSE OF THE CELL*
When he's talking about those cells all i can think is all the characters from Hataraku Saibo
Wonder how hard it would be for Seeker to get permission to borrow the characters.
I
Yeah now we know they all die every 4 months R.I.P
Cells at work is a fun anima that basically teaches all this through characters and their traits.
Funny and accurate. This was a great video, but you definitely want to check it out on Netflix.
Ngl this vid got my hyped to go back and finish that anime. LET'S GOO
*Cells at Work already explained it*
Not the part where the old and weak red blood cells get killed and become food for the young ones

Hail Anime
Hail Otaku
if only they made school this engaging, entertaining, and all around enjoyable
I give blood every 2-3 months. Everyone should, if eligible.
I had a skin graft surgery in 2014, I required 31 units of blood products. At least that's what I was told. So I've been trying ever since to pay it back. Although I've been donating fairly regularly since 2002, and I've donated 5 gallons total, plus I've done 2 platelet donation (although I'm not allowed to anymore, so I was told last time I have platelets)
Platelet donation are greatly appreciated, but absolutely not for the faint of heart....90 minutes minimum stuck in a chair with a horse needle in each arm....can't get up the whole time. Strenuous is how I'd describe it.
@harly2000 that is awesome, happy to hear it!
I like your channel's name

This was a great explanation! thank you
great series, great casting!!
Pretty good basic pathology coverage. Thumbs up 👍
That Hogwarts comparison was a genious move. Creative and fullfilled it's purpose 😁
@Ex Animus r/iamverysmart
@Ex Animus you're just adding fuel to the flames, don't make it worse for yourself 😀
@Ex Animus u don't have to get immediately mad and start insulting, that is not really "intelligent" from you. Also I've never been into Harry Potter, just seen the movies a few times, but wanted to point out that if you can use a decent fiction book reference, why not? Don't know what that world revolving around me thingy and me being so clever (never said anything like that, in fact I wrote just like 1 sentence 😀) was supposed to mean, but I reckon your simple brain (as you would say) just had an error or something.
PS: Never use ROFLMFAO ever again, for your own good, it's so 2010.
@Ex Animus Not gonna reply to the beginning of your comment because you again completely misunderstood everything and just started avoiding and insulting yet again my smart KIDDO.
Ok but something I finally agree with, fiction can be popular to some, but calling it useless and other things like you did in the first place doesn't make sense. If you feel that way then ok, it's your opinion. I'm done here, you present no arguments or anything sensible. Peace
Thank you.
I appreciate the way you explain this!
Hi dear Patrick Kelly, I am so grateful to you and your episodes Thank you very very much!!! I have small request, can you take the background music out or reduces volume please? Or can you email me once without the the background music please? Regards Hossi Cosmic.
As usual, fascinating and informative. 👏👏👏💙
Wow! What an amazing creation the human body is!
*Looks at wheelchair* amazing.
This was amazing knowledge drop. Thank you
Thank you sir!
There's also the part where we take a photo of the blood donation, post it on facebook and put a phrase saying how good it feels and how humble we are.
xD
i love this channel. more documentations to learn from. hope you will have a videos about physics
Holy cow it is more awesome than i thought!!!
Well, this video will be revisited by me anytime I forget it and in enters my brain like a sworm
No wonder, the flu didn't last long in my system two weeks ago, obvs my immune system kicked in and dealt with that shit. But it is also interesting and extraordinary on how Blood cells and White Blood cells, platelets are created and formed based which environment of the body they're in.
I feel shivers through my spine when I see needle..
Thank you
May God bless the team. Thanks for info
This process of recycling also happens to the many tissue types in the body from skin to bones.
waitttt how does it get from the spleen to the bone marrow ?? are there vessels connecting the two ?? also does it go from the bone marrow to the spleen after it’s made and then out into the circulatory system ??
Thanks for the video, I found it hard to follow as the background music was a bit loud.
I just lost some blood from my arm and it is weak and it hurts so thanks for letting me know
Honestly, I was hoping to also hear some information on how to support your body's recovery and production of red blood cells and/or hemoglobin. I'm struggling with some anemia caused by Ulcerative Colitis. Already trying to supplement Vitamin C to help with iron absorption, but not sure if I should be doing anything else.
Hey how are you doing? I just can't ignore the fact that people are seeing your comment and not saying anything. But I guess they just don't have the answer to what you're looking for, and sadly, so do I. But I hope all is well with you and wish you a speedy recovery!
Me too!
Thank you for this video. Can you pls explain what happens during blood transfusion? How long is the blood going to stay in the body?
blood recycles every 3 months.......new blood is gone....but can leave diseases. ......most are tested for , from the donor. ....most transfusions are done when your hemoglobin is under 8.
I cant believe it, my bones are making my blood!😵 that s amazing!😵❤
It's just amazing how blood forms just out of nothing it's like magic...One day we will crack the ageing process to live longer
Sir, I just asked if you have some coffee.
Always wondering how is blood made in our body and how it's linked to food we eat , by the way what exactly is bone marrow?
originally they said that foods rich in vit.d would build strong bones, .......but now they say it's a overall health diet and it takes months .
Our body is is just amazing, so sophisticated and accurate
I have donated 3 or 4 times but my HB is not lowering it's always above 17. What to do??
You don't know how helpful this was.
(mylofibrosis).
I donated blood several times but once after donating I felt terrible vertigo/dizziness after that I stopped donating blood.
Nice
So breathing less will help produce more RBC than breathing more? Please confirm my suspicion somebody.
I think I have blood deficiency. Any suggestion to fix this?
How long does the body take to replenish one pint of blood after a blood donation??
Please remake this video with a Hataraku Saibō (Cells at Work!) theme so I can actually recognize which cells do what
😒
Nice video. though I suggest to make the background music less obviousor with lower volume. it made it a bit difficult to focus on the talking and the explanations, at least for me.
Megakeryoblast sounds cool
What is the background music ?
It's a bit too loud tho
@@Mraeddaem1 its cool still
It's called "Buy my Shit" and pushed by all video editing software companies to make good videos more like an ass cream commercials than actual real human to human conversation. And like vacation time share ads, it only works on the weak-minded.
Informative. Ya I've been looking for a place to give blood. I just want to know if I should eat prior or if they'd like the blood from a fasted state. Idk if people do, or can give blood fasted, but these specifics revolve around my dieting lifestyle regimens & I wouldn't won't any unwanted difficulties. I just hope they have somebody who knows how to work a needle, cause I veins for days like no other & this one chic kept hitting me only to miss like I was a pin cushion. "Realll Experienced", so she said. But I'm down.
the difference between a pro and a beginner
I didn't know cells could produce platelets? thought the platelets were already in the plasma saying plasma is not of cell structure, considering plasma is cytoplasm material or derived from. possible rbc's are nuclei's in the plasma cytoplasm
The human body is a incredible bioengineered Marvel but it so fragile at the same time
Bruh I was just curious, no one told me to come here 😂 much appreciated science
😎Amazing how you explained the purpose, the creation and the manipulation of blood. It makes me think from a micro perspective to a astro prospective of function in general. I believe we were created to assist the Earth to mature and continue its evolution just as cells to an organ. Sorry if Im in too deep lol😅
- Requesting Platelet aggregassion, and healing process of cells (scar tissue)
I just donated. Was curious
After fitting the artificial bone into the body, it grow with the natural bons
It is very much needed please reply soon.
I want to put artificial bons in my skull.
So the spleen is like a city recycling sorting plant and also the police HQ all in one premise? nice.
your under arrest. ....give up your blood.
Husband: If that just came out of me, how is my body replenish it?
Wife: Don't ask me. Watch Seeker.
How bone marrow is made?
I have a high hemeoglobin and elevated LDL cholesterol,so, donating blood seems like a good idea, isn't it ?
if there are steroids. ....someone is going to jump out of their bed and do back flips.
I will probably learn more useful information here than in my biology class
Who does the recycling when your spleen is removed?
Wow. First time i have come across your channel. Jeez-a-loo.
I've read repeatedly that there are a limited number of stem cells; can this process be used to generate something similar enough to facilitate stem cell research and treatments?
I've have been donating whole blood for 10 years, once per year with no problems. Two years ago I donated platelets for the first time. I couldn't stop bleeding for 20 minutes after donation and at my last physical over a year later I was diagnosed with low platelet count. There is no history in my large family (sibling, parents, grandparents cousins, aunts or uncles) of low platelets, nor have I been exposed to radiation or chemicals. I have always been in perfect health until I donated platelets.
I never heard of that. ......I know if you have taken a asprin or other blood thinner drugs that can happen.
Could you guys improve the audio quality
Not focusing on music but the clear & loud words
Thanks!
I knew blood was made in our bones I just didn't know how until now
Do blood cells ( red, white ) need glucose to live?
I just liked the video because he donated a bag of blood he don't needed to donate, but he make it anyway

After watching the movie Blade, it really makes me wonder?
I watched this to face my fear once again I’m about to pass out
Every deterioration starts with the digestive system. With age everything produces less, example: less hydrochloric acid means less vitamins proteins absorbed.
pre.and prebiotic ......eat small meals every 3 hours.....split vitamin doses and fast once in awhile. ...should help a little. ...also apple cider vinegar.
Why can't I see blood or needles I curl up and look away
Just 4:am thoughts and I landed here 👍🏼
How is this wonder not by design!
I donated today... And was told blood regenerates. ....But I have a really dumb question...
If blood regenerates, then why should we donate our blood in the first place ? -- and what is the point of transfusions? Can the blood not be regenerated when it's lost past a certain threshold ?
And can everyone regenerate blood in the same way ? Like what if I have a mitochondria issue I was never aware of...would I be damaged forever ? What about slightly anemic? My hemo was only 131.
And what if you have sickle cell TRAIT?
So dumb I'm sorry I know... Someone was trying to tell me that our blood *doesn't* regenerate and now I'm freaking out haha 😅
megakaryoblast ,,,yeah they release platelets into the blood with their little tentacles in certain situations,,,,
Did anyone else read the title of this video as “This is how your body makes new BONE” and then half way through the video went back and realized it said “BLOOD” ?
Just you, so far!
