  • Stucco how much to break out.
    Folks, we are located in Oakland, Ca.
    Howdy Folks, all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon's website.
    www.stuccoplas...
    Live long and plaster hats, shirts, and other cool stuff. www.livelongan...
    Kirk Giordano Plastering Inc.
    The question of how much stucco I should break out to repair a stucco wall comes up a lot.
    In this video, I explain how much you should break out. Of course, that depends on the level of paper rot.
    Break out existing stucco, repair deteriorated paper add new paper, then re-stucco.
    Hello everyone, in this video, I viewed this window through e-mail.
    The contractor explained he could not salvage reasonably decent paper to properly waterproof the window.
    I explained that some homes have no salvageable paper and sometimes no wire or wood left. I said we would do our best with what we have to work with.
    On this window, it worked out well; my son and I could slide some new paper under the original horizontal top so that it is waterproof as well as possible.
    It’s in fast motion as my son Jason felt no one would watch an hour’s worth of waterproofing and installing wire.
    The owner said to remove as much stucco as was necessary to correct the paper membrane as best as possible. We removed a lot but finally found good paper to tie into,
    Sometimes there is no good paper or membrane left, nor any wire or wood left. This happens when stucco has been neglected for too many years.
    We show how to repair stucco on an exterior door when the paper deteriorates. We usually do the best we can with whatever paper is available. But, as the pictures show, the paper has seen better days!
    For immediate bids, send pictures to Jay or myself at our sites below.

    Thanks for watching.

    Hi, Great question. Most windows are designed to allow moisture out, plus they are always installed over watertight membranes.

    Thanks for the video. I am installing new windows in a 1920's house and am struggling with brittle paper also. Guess we just do the best we can to slip it under in a ship lap manner and use a lot of caulking, short of ripping apart the wall and starting over? Again thank you for the videos!!

    Howdy Frederick, no a casing bead is not necessary in California. Sometimes with commercial projects if it’s specked out in the prints I will install them. I think I have installed casing bead only once, but I have installed J trim many times especially on commercial projects.

      Eveneing Ruan Tecillo, excellent question, dust my brother, the dust would be all over you, your home and all the neighbors, plus you would still have to chip back and leave the some paper and wire for proper tie ins.

    Great videos, thank you.
    I do have a question for you. I’m trying to restore a small one story house built in 1956. It has old stucco on it. It turns out the stucco was applied on top of existing asbestos siding 😮. I’m now debating if I should try to hire someone and fix the stucco which has some minor cracks and buckling in one spot at the bottom where it wraps on to the foundation wall, or try to attach 1x3 furring strips, through stucco and asbestos siding to the studs and cover it with vinyl siding. Appreciate the advice.

    Hi defender, I did apply 2 layers of paper under the Moistop window flashing and on top of the existing paper. The fast motion stuff makes that part difficult to see.
    Code requires we go under whatever window membrane a person chooses, I am aware of about 20 different window flashing, I have to go under whichever is in place at the time of our arrival.
    Thanks for comment, I here it's tough to work in Florida unless you get used to the humidity, any truth in that?

    Thanks for this video. I have never done this before, and I was going to use an angle grinder for cutting the stucco to install new construction (with flange) replacement windows. I plan to follow your video. Is there any disadvantage to using a grinder?
    Also something has really been puzzling me. There are vents every other stud bay at the top of each outside wall, venting the stud space. There's no insulation, so the house gets very cold. Also when I heat the house, I get moist cold air meeting warm inside air, making vapor in the stud bay. So I covered the vents with bitumen from the inside, and foamboard with silverside towards outside, and taped seams air-tight. I followed that with insulation on top. Now I'm wondering if I made a mistake, perhaps having two vapor barriers facing each other. I did some reading on stucco and think the first layer will absorb any vapor and dissipate it. Will the wall get moist inside, or is the double lathe of paper enough to breathe? Thanks.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  10 лет назад

      Morning Scott Johnson, there is no advantage in a grinder, in fact it creates much dust with little advantage.
      The stud bay vents are to ventilate the attic roof normally, not the walls. If it were me I'd go up there and spray the expanding foam down each bay, this will stop the air from going down them while allowing the circulating air in the attic, of course you can insulate the walls too.
      Best wishes, and have a good New Year.

    No caulking under the window so that any water that might get in, has a way out.That is my understanding He mentioned the same thing missing at the bottom of the wall, no way for any water that might get in to get out so it is trapped.

      HowdyJA, lots of ways to skin a cat,
      I prefer to paper place paper up to a window or door then fuse the paper to the window, personally.
      As a rule, I use a construction sealant and adhesive, Sikaflex 1A is the stuff I prefer as it's been sold at all the professional plastering yards for many years and is time-tested bt the professionals.
      Excellent caulking but try not to get it on your hands as it's definitely not water cleanable.

    Hi, I was wondering is it possible to make an exterior stucco frame for windows, doors on a vinyl siding home? thanks

  • @StuccoPlastering
    @StuccoPlastering  11 лет назад

    Hi Jerry, we usual calk just the sides, the tops usually have a plastic or metal Z flashing installed so no caulking is necessary. I f water gets in this 90 year old home it won’t because of that window.
    Can it leach out?
    I don't know, as most paints are not waterproof even if you apply many.
    We just put them back the best way possible from what we have to work with.

    I wanted to ask what the minimum number of inches to get the paper under the old paper. the inspector is asking that I slide it under up to six inches and I don't know how you could do that.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  10 лет назад +2

      Evening Jamal Kazemi, excellent question.
      Most inspectors ask for 6 inches, but that's mighty rare to acheive unless the home is under 30 years old.
      There are times I fight for one inch and sometimes there is no paper and even the wire is deteriorated (none) with the only thing holding up, say a garage is the stucco itself.
      All you can do is the best you can with what's available!
      Some homes are over a hundred years old with little maintenance ever done to it, while some old homes have been extremely well cared for.
      Best wishes,
      kirk and family.

    Yes it gets brutal. Frequent brakes, loads of water and keeping covered is the key to staying alive! July and August are the worst. O so you went under the flashing, I understand now. Yall use that "chicken wire" in California. We use a tighter mesh wire lath. Why do ya suppose that is? Weather conditions?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  6 лет назад

      Good Morning Tony dude, the bottom should always be placed on a flashing, so our new paper goes under this flashing, s'ooo, not necessary to caulk the bottom, in fact, caulking sometime seals the weep holes on the bottom of windows.

      If water gets in behind the window you want it to escape out the bottom. It's ok to calk some of the bottom of the window, but leave at least a few gaps for water to escape.

      Good evening albert, the window area should have a membrane on the sill, then one on each side countering the bottom and lastly a Z flashing on top.
      When the window is installed, properly placed flashing with caulking deverts all the rain water.
