    To clarify this three week long comment of the week:
    the original comment was in reference to Richard and Seth stating that Tomer should die first for playing Ruination, then Crim for suggesting MLD.
    If a sharp and effective strategy is pitched, the response is usually that the table will exclusively focus you. However, if everyone at the table is doing powerful stuff, is this a good argument? Sometimes one person has smothering tithe, one person opens the way for 6, and one person has necropotence out but only drew to 7 from 2 in hand. The smothering tithe player is also running ruination in his deck.
    Now consider that the strongest deck is to your right, so the other 2 players get to untap and deal with it too.
    Who do you focus then? Is it an easy choice?
    It just feels like a Tomer/Crim dies to doom blade argument.
    I’d love to see an actual discussion on the merits of running basics versus non-basics without it being reductive. That’s all!

      I think the steelman version of their argument are cards that generate a lot more hate than is worth for their quality, e.g. Strixhaven Stadium.
      While it is true that not everything will cause people to kill you on sight, that doesn’t mean there aren’t cards that will get you targeted.

    • @BobardeZanzibar
      @BobardeZanzibar 7 месяцев назад +5

      The response to this is that you need to be advancing your game plan such that if attention shifts towards you, you can either fight back or win the game before your opponents can kill you. LD played as disruption sets everyone back without also removing their ability to fight back. A boardwipe will get everyone mad at you, but they can't do anything about it because their creatures are dead but if you destroy their lands, they can still hit you. Also, as long as LD is not mainstream, you present a unique threat to resources and eliminating you eliminates the possibility of you doing so in a way that killing a player doesn't completely eliminate the chances for a wrath.

    • @ajellis3914
      @ajellis3914 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@TheChiefKipSavage I do think this is a relevant thing, though, like I don’t play smothering tie or Necro potence because I don’t really think they’re worth the amount of hate you get and I don’t play combo.
      Some cards like oppression are super good but they’ll get you focused out real fast. People need to know about these cards so that they have the proper ideas in terms of deck building and what they should and shouldn’t be scared of playing.
      I think the real problem is when it’s applied to things that don’t necessarily take over the game in a way that presents a clear and obvious on board wincon. I need to know what the real things to watch out for her, not oh geez I’m gonna get focused because I ramped two lands out or have a guardian project.

    An overlooked aspect of Emrakul and Mindslaver's wording is that since you control the player, you are able to decide whether or not the commander is returned to the command zone. Casting Path to Exile on your opponent's commander, leaving it in exile, and failing to find the land, can be enough to shut entire decks out of the game permanently.

    I think too much of your evaluation here is absent an Eldrazi Tribal build. A LOT of Eldrazi don't do much without being in a deck that is designed to play Eldrazi. However, when you put them into a deck that is built to synergize and power out these giants working together then they break each other open. Also, there are a couple different groups of Eldrazi cards that go together, but don't go with others. It would be interesting if you guys re-did this, thinking specifically about building a dedicated Eldrazi deck.

    29:47 can't believe I'm agreeing with Richard but I've been saying this for ages. Controlling an opponent is a deceptively weak effect because if an opponent puts a card in their deck, it's probably beneficial to them. So most of the things you can do when controlling your opponent is still beneficial to them. You often just end up passing the controlled turn (what are you gonna do, cast my permanents for me? Sure, thanks for the extra turn lol) and Emrakul just ends up being a 13/13 pseudo vanilla.

    • @fj7509
      @fj7509 6 месяцев назад

      Richard forgot about a few really important things.
      You can swing with their commander into Emrakul and cause it to hit the graveyard instead of going back to the command zone. You can potentially exile it or put it back into their deck (depending on if they're running tutors or graveyard access). All of these are devastating.
      You can eat up all their treasure tokens or use abilities to sacrifice their creatures without them getting value off it. You can use cards that would target them for their own benefit on you instead.
      And while you can't reveal their hand, you can verbally tell the entire table what cards they have.
      There are many more things I'm not thinking of that you can do.

    55:22 I agree with Richard here. This argument doesn’t apply to all good cards, but it does apply to cards that annoy or scare people without actually stopping or killing them. As an example, last night, I saw Grand Arbiter get removed when my entire board was clearly more threatening.

    Fast mana is super important, if built right you should have these big eldrazi coming out turn 4 or so on average. Considering how early or late you can get them out in the game makes a huge difference to how well each of them play and how useful they are.
    Because of this I put Ulamog very low and actually took them out of my eldrazi deck to let me ramp faster. Pretty much what Tomer briefly touches on at 20 mins.

    I like OG Kozilek and Ulamog, Ceaseless Hunger in any deck where I’m running symmetrical mill effects to protect against milling myself out before I find Jace or lab man and to exile other people’s reshuffle effects. They put in work in those decks.

    I feel like Nulldrifter was undervalued. Though some of the unknown-at-the-time MH3 cards that support it weren't available... cards that do support it existed!
    It can be evoked to set off cards that care about 7 mana value colorless/eldrazi spells and then you can emerge at flash speed to get another cast trigger and have a big body.

    it feels like everyone forgets that you have 98 other cards in your deck you can pair with. pair oblivion sower with that eldrazi who exiles 20 cards from a player. then you get all their lands you exiled. and its almost certain your gonna get a ton of land

    Kozilek the Great Distortion actually _does_ suffer from the "if you play it people will target you" problem. It looks super threatening, but usually can't protect itself for long. 7 cards feels like a lot, but when you have to pick and chose what to hold and what to play, those cards go quick (and that's assuming you even were able to set up the ideal draw 7). Add in the wingdings mana cost and the mediocre menace, and he's really more of an A than an S.
    "If Mulldrifter was a cast trigger, would you play it in any deck?" Yes, Animar. I'll take 5, in fact.

    I think you guys are looking at the promised end in the idea of 60 card formats. For Richard and Seth it is like a main phase Teferi’s protection from one player minimum. And you don’t necessarily need to spend the turn doing as much damage as possible to the person you mindslaver, you use their turn to kill your opponents and leave them open for you to finish them off.

  • @ubertuna1

    Sire of Stagnation is a pretty sweet one you guys missed, felt like it got a lot of play when it came out but not as much anymore. It also combos well with Oblivion Sower because it constantly exiles your opponents' cards
