Thanks, really appreciate that. And yea, I think we always want to know where athletes move to and who they are being coached by, but sometimes overlook the Why, which in fairness, is not always told to us as fans either. But its an interesting discussion for sure!
Really appreciate that! Yea I wanted to open the discussion a bit since we can always just list out who moved groups, but the why is a bit more interesting to discuss!
I follow Daryll Neita so at first I was surprised she moved on because from where I sit she had a successful year, but I also know that she was super disappointed not to get an individual medal at the OG and I think that is the main reason she's changing coaches. The changes in the coaches for the Jamaican sprinters have been the most interesting to me. As far as I'm aware ETH still has no coach confirmed for 2025. The athlete I wish would move on is Athing Mu, Kersee is doing nothing for her career.
We had a pandemic which substantially impacted the global championship schedules causing a run (pun intended) of Olympics and Worlds within a relatively short span. For many athletes in their upper 20s and 30s, the upcoming Worlds and Olympics are their last chance at a global medal, so they want to give themselves the best opportunity possible. I respect it. As always, this was a great video, thanks for sharing!
Let’s be honest and truthful someone told Elaine her husband was a coach and she believed them now her husband destroyed her career! She will never make another Jamaican team again! Greed also helped to destroy her career!
😂😂. I wouldn't really go so far as to say she'll never make a team again. Given her age it's still possible, but I don't think we'll ever see 2021 Elaine ever again
This kinda sounds hateful I get your point but she is still a super talented athlete her injuries play a part as well. Already an icon even if she should leave the sport now Elaine had an incredible career
@ there’s nothing hateful about speaking the truth and nobody could ever doubt her talent as far as I’m concerned she’s the greatest female sprinter in history after Shelly Ann but she’s got the brain of a Rockin horse!
Thats my thought, but its of course speculation. She had alot of growth the past 4 years, but hasn't been able to get on the podium yet. Lance may be the one to get her to that next step in 2025, even despite a very competitive landscape in the women's sprints.
Maybe Amusan is aiming at double events at championships and games just like Gail Devers did at Olympics... I'm predicting she'll be running 200m more and hoping to win medals at 100mh and 200m at a particular championships. Once she hits 10.8 or better, then she becomes invisible on hurdles her specialty. Only if age wouldn't stop her... Ofcourse the two events I highlighted are friendly to matured sprinters.
or how about these coaches generally teach basically one style instead of multiple? They live by the "if it aint broke dont fix it," -- when you don't fit the system they still try to keep fitting you.
Great discussion and this makes sense that there are several factors involved, not just drama. I know it may be taboo to discuss but what, if any, effect do you think the procurement and administration of PED's would have in this choice? With the advent of enhanced games will these topics become more normalized to discuss?
Yea, its easy for us to say its drama or the coach/athlete had an issue, or the athlete had an issue with another athlete, but there are so many factors. Thats also why I put in the part about life and family with Christina Clemons and Nia Ali. They literally are making decisions based on what works well for their kids. Regarding PED, nah no opinion there, I dont think/dont know of that being an influence for athletes. I dont think the enhanced games will have any impact on the track & field we watch either.
@@mattkanemusic7529 Yea I can set 3 thumbnails at once for a video so some people may see something different. I had one that showed Daryll Neita, another with Elaine, another with Alana Reid.
I think more often than not, most athletes mat at least one coaching change during their professional career. There are very few athletes who stayed with their same coach.
There are so many different reasons why athletes leave a coach. I think it's quite natural and normal. Some may believe it was a wrong decision to leave a particular coach, while others believe it is wrong for certain athletes to stay with some coach. Ultimately, it is the athlete's decision, and I believe it should be respected. So whether an athlete decides to stay with or leave a coach, they are doing it for what they believe is their best interest.
Agree that its very much natural and normal. Your exactly right that everyone will have a different opinion on an athlete staying with or leaving a coach. But it usually comes down to the athlete making a choice based on what is best for them. We as fans want to "tell" athletes what a better decision would be, but we dont know. Good call here!
are the athletes being forced to go to the sponsor's coaches? If yes, I can see both sides. The company want the athletes in a place they think they will succeed and why send an athlete to a coach when the chemistry between athlete and coach may not be synergized?
Yea I watched the interview. It was disappointing and his situation was very extreme. But I essentially noted that when I spoke about sponsors. Sometimes sponsors will have their athletes train under their own coaches. Dennis Mitchell is a Nike Coach, Lance Baruhman is an Adidas coach, Rana Reider is a Puma coach, etc.
1:35 Apart from hitting certain times and getting certain medals, what other goals would an athlete not be hitting that would make someone switch coaches? Aren't those the 2 overarching goals that you would have in working with a coach?
Yea for the most part those are the 2 main things. But there could be other things such as preventing injury, wanting to race more or less frequently that athletes set as their goals that the coach may not want the athlete to do. For example, many athletes change coaches cause they consistently get injured and they hope the new coach can simply help them train smarter so 1-2 years down the line, they can be healthy and in a position to win a medal. But thats like a sub goal of the 2 main goals like you noted.
I having been seeing athletes swishing coaches for years but as far as getting better on the track does happen. I really think this is end of my favorite athlete Elaine Thompson because the only coach for her is Steven Francis
I dont know if its the end only because she is no longer with Stephen Francis. SHe had success under him, but she also had injuries under him as well (2017, 2018, 2019). She also saw fast times and some success after him as well (2022 and end of 2023). I think it will be very challenging for her to get back to her previous 2021 form. But not necessarily because of coaching. But we'll see!
@ Wait help me understand the logic. So because she didnt make the Olympic team at 21 years old, she needs to change coaches? Should I list out a bunch of athletes wo missed an olympic team, at a young age, remained with their coach and went on to win a medal later at worlds/olympics? I think we have to acknowledge, and this was partly why I made the video, we dont know exact reasons that go into an athlete changing coaches. We can look at their results, and that may be one factor, but its impossible for us to say Athlete X MUST change coaches or MUST stay where they are.
