Is the 400m World Record Under Threat?...Matthew Hudson-Smith Thinks It Is
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 фев 2025
- Matthew Hudson-Smith of Great Britain finished 2nd place in the 400m at the Paris Olympics in what was the deepest race in history. His time of 43.44 moved him up to no.5 all-time in the event, and was joined by 4 other guys under the 44 second barrier in that same race. The current world record is 43.03 set back in 2016, but with the current generation of 400m guys running 43 seconds more frequently, could we see that record take down sooner than later?

Botswanas 400m potential is very underrated, Amantle Montsho beat Allison Felix at the world championship in 2012 to win Gold, Isaac Makwala was very unlucky at world championships but he ran multiple times under 44s and has many relay medals including Tokyo Olympics, last season a 20y old kebinatshipi ran 44.22, 24 year old Ndori ran 44.10, 23y old Pesela ran 44.54 as teenager and straggled with injuries since then but is slowing getting back to fitness and was part of the relay in paris
You got your dates mixed up. 2012 is not a world championship year. It’s an Olympic year and amantle got 4th.
You’re probably talking about 2011.
Montsho beating Felix in a slow time of 49.5 means nothing when we're talking about world records. Makwala is retired so has no more potential left.
As for the rest of your points, I agree and hope they can remain injury-free so we can see their true potential.
Other Botswanan 400m talent includes Baboloki Thebe (44.02) and Leungo Scotch (44.54). There's so much potential in a country with only 2 million people!
Montsho was also suspended for doping...
@@WheeJonesDid Makwala officially retire or not? I seem to remember something about it but he WAS competing at World Relays last year (he ran like a 47 first leg and forced Tebogo to split a f*cking 20.3 first 200m to gain on the others LOL) but idk what happened to him after that.
Next 3-4 year the 400m WR is gone...same as that 200m and also that 800m...
For both men and women or just men?
Cuz for women the 200 got threatened but that threat has abated so it’s gonna last another decade.
But for men 200 and 400 it may be a bit threatened.
you're reaching. people will first have to get close.
@@kc5466Why so quick to assume Jackson’s never getting back to 21.4 speed? I get she had a rough 2024 season and she’s not as young as she used to be but if Shelly’s taught us anything it’s that Jamaican women get faster the older they get (LMAOO). I just want her to get back to full fitness and hopefully challenge for 200m gold with Gabby and possibly Alfred in Tokyo!?
@AthleticsEditz shelly is an exception, not the rule. Just like gatlin was an exception for American sprinters when he won his final world championship in his late 30s.
Shericka is 30 now and trying to not only get back to 21.4 but surpass that, which will be far harder now. And unlike shelly her strength is in the second half of the race not the first half. And the first thing to go the older you get is the speed endurance. Shericka speed endurance may never be as great as it was before.
Shericka can win gold at championships because it only takes a 21.7 to get gold. And I think she can get to that type of speed again. But 21.4 or better is out the window, unfortunately.
@@kc5466 You make valid points however just because Shelly’s an ‘outlier’ doesn’t mean Shericka can’t also do the same. I still don’t think you can count her out from getting back to her 2022/2023 form SINCE she’s only 30 but yeah, it will be harder after injury. My actual predictions for her in 2025 are: she’ll win gold in Tokyo, beating Gabby Thomas for 2nd and Alfred for 3rd (providing Alfred runs the 200m). She’ll most likely run in the 21.6-21.8 range and will have a SB around that as well. But who knows? Not us, that’s for sure!
That's a great goal for a guy at Hudson-Smith's level, let's compare PR's 200/400. Hudson-Smith 20.34/43.44, Van Niekerk 19.84/43.03, Johnson 19.32/43.18. If Hudson-Smith is going to break 43 then his pathway looks something like this 21.49/21.50 = 42.99. His 200 indicates how close to maximum he would need to perform at, in order to go out fast enough to have a chance to break 43. At this point in his career I don't think he has the speed to cruise a 21.49 and finish with a 21.50.
Going hard on the amount of content bro. Love it, thank you!

@@jhadebredenkamp97Nah, I think he just enjoys making content tbh (unlike others, cough cough TRP).
Always appreciate you bro!💯
@AthleticsEditz ikr TRP's so shit fr. Clickbait and overhyping 24/7
@@jhadebredenkamp97 Heavy on the clickbait
43.4 is still a long way from sub 43, but I honestly can't believe that Matthew managed to get down to 43.44. I know he has been plagued with injuries throughout his career, which has obviously slowed his progress, but dropping his PB by 0.8 in one year was way beyond my expectations. It's impossible to know what his potential is, but he is clearly very hungry and, if he can continue to stay injury free, it doesn't seem unreasonable that he could improve further.
I was just as impressed with Charlie Dobson's improvements last year and he has a bit more time ahead of him, so it seems likely he will improve further.
We have a slew of young Botswanans running fast times, all young enough that I would expect them to improve, but of them I think Letsile has the most potential, if he chooses to direct it that way.
There's Quincy Hall also running 43.4 not long after switching to the open 400, as well as Quincy Wilson setting ridiculous times for a 16 year old.
Alexander Doom of Belgium also made huge improvements last year and, whilst I think he probably has too far to go to be considered in the WR race at the moment, he can also help to push the others.
Muzala Samukonga is also really young and I would expect a lot more from him over the coming years.
Jareem Richards is the same age as Matthew Hudson-Smith, so this is likely to be the last Olympic cycle for both of them and I guess we can include Kirani in that group as well. All three can still improve and maybe they'll break the record, but given what some of the younger guys are doing, I think youth has the edge. I should probably also include Steven Gardiner here, he is slightly younger, but also has constant health issues and I don't see him making huge improvements unless he can stay healthy long term.
To summarize, I think there is a very high chance that the record will go by the next Olympics at the latest, but I think it's more likely to go to one of the younger athletes. My top picks would be Quincy Wilson, Muzala or Letsile, but I would also like to see what Christopher Morales-Williams can put down outside.
Whatever happens, the men's 400m is looking the healthiest it's ever looked and we should also expect some great 4x400 clashes. It's crazy when you think of the depth of the US team and yet there are still other teams that may be able to challenge them.
Agree its a long way, but remember that Wayde went from 43.48 to 43.03 so its not impossible. Also in the 80s, Butch Reynolds went from 43.9 to 43.2. Thats why I think all the guys running 43 seconds at the same time is going to motivate and push each them to go even faster. But yea, matt has had so many injuries and is now finally hitting a stride of health the past few years.
Agree that Charles Dobson was very impressive last year, not only his 44.3 PB, but also his splits on the 4x4 with that 43.3 in the relay final.
Like you said, so many guys are in the mix and seeing the record go down between now and the next olympics in 2028 is not crazy and could happen. Especially if someone like Tebogo enters the 400m conversation more seriously. Appreciate you!
EXAAAACTLY. Owner of this channel doesn't get that. He wants the record broken sooooo badly😩😂
Quincy Wilson doing 44.20 at 16 is pure insanity
Yea, that kind of gets overlooked in the hype of him being 16. Like, thats really really close to sub-44 seconds if were being real... And the world junior record is 43.87 by Steve Lewis when he was 19 years old. Quincy still has 3 more full years to break that....
@CarlFredrik-uo1cu It will be interesting to see how he adapts to the mental challenges, his body maturing his body growing and body pains and being a world class runner.
@@TheFinalLeg Not 3 more FULL years because Quincy will be 20 in 3 years. He just turned 17 in January so will only be eligible until December of the year he turns 19.
@ 3 years:
2025 he is 17 the entire year
2026 he is 18 the entire year
2027 he is 19 the entire year
As you said, U-20 means you are under 20 years old through December 31st of the calendar year, which he will be on December 31st 2027. So he has 3 years to continue setting World U-20 records and perofrmances

Before we talk about the world record, let see who is going to be the first to 43.18. They have got to get there first before they even discuss 43.03, Also when you ask that question, ask them how fast they are running the 200 and look at indoor to see where they are running the 500 and 600. That will tell you something.
EXAAAAACTLLLYYT. The owner of this won't speak on that because that time belongs to an American
Don’t forgot the GB women. Christine O is one of the GOATs of the 400m
No she's not. Her PB is 49.4, that is SLOW. However, Chrstine O was CONSISTENTLY in contention in her era, I'll give her that.
@@WheeJones 49.4 is not slow. It's not one of the fastest times, but most of the people above her in PB have either no medals or a worse championship history than her. That counts for something - although I wouldn't say she's one of the "GOATs" either lol (mind you there can only be one GOAT - people constantly misuse this term...)
@@AJT127 Fair enough
Yea, was just talking about the men's history here though. But yes between Christine O, Katharine Merry, Kathy Smallwood-Cook, etc. the British women have a deep history as well.

As a Brit I’d LOVE for MHS to break the world record and although it IS possible I don’t think it’ll happen. There is quite the gap between 43.0 and 43.4 however I do think he has slightly faster than 43.44 in him! If none of the TOP 400m guys get it (e.g. none of Hall, MHS, Samukonga, Richard’s, etc.) then I think our best bet is Tebogo - if he decides to switch from the 100/200m double to the 200/400m double. He might be the best bet either way; he’s that talented but we’ll see I guess. As for the 4x400 there could absolutely be a world record next season, or in the next few seasons! Botswana’s team is very young and if Tebogo were to train specifically for the 400m I’m quite confident he could break 43 in the relay. Combine that with their ever-improving group of guys and they could definitely get that record! For the USA they’ll always be the favourite going in to the 4x400 for men AND women, their team’s a bit older HOWEVER it is important to note that Quincy Hall didn’t run on that relay in Paris (can’t remember exactly why tbh) so possibly he could have gotten them under that world record from all those years ago! The 400 and 800m for both genders are looking like some of the best events to watch right now and I’m willing to bet one of this world records will be broken sooner rather than later (my bet’s on the men’s 800m falling to Arop!)! Appreciate you, Anderson!
Your right that there is a huge gap between 43.4 and 43.0. But look at guys like Butch Reynolds (43.93 -> 43.29) or even Wayde himself (43.48 -> 43.03).
Honestly, I have to look, but I feel like Michael Johnson is the only guys who has actually had true steady progression to 43 low(44.1 -> 43.9 -> 43.6 -> 43.3 -> 43.1).
All it takes is one good race from anyone and they can get a a good time. But who knows.
Tebogo is undoubtedly the best bet to get the record if he actual chose to take the 400m seriously for a year.
Agree, that the 4x4 record can go down, but I spoke with Tebogo's coach last year and he said they may not be focusing too much on 4x4 record this year, but who knows.
Who are some of the young Team GB guys we should be looking out for?
@@TheFinalLeg Yeah 100% the gap from 43.4 to 43.0 CAN be made up; it’s just about executing that perfect race on the perfect day, etc, etc. which is what’s going to be the difference between getting it and not getting it!
What else did you ask Tebogo’s coach/did his coach tell you?! Did he talk about Tebogo’s plans overall in 2025 or over the next few years - I’m quite interested because, you know, most people don’t just meet and talk with an Olympic Champion’s coach if you get what I mean?!
As for Team GB the first ones that spring to mind are obviously MHS and also Charlie Dobson. Charlie’s consistently running in the mid-44s and is also the Diamond League Champion (!!!). Not to mention he split 43.33 as an anchor in the 4x400m final, only behind Tebogo (43.03); Hudson-Smith (43.09); Benjamin (43.18) and Norwood (43.26)! Obviously other good runners include Haydock-Wilson (‘only’ a 45 PB) and Reardon (44.70 PB from 2024).
The main 2 seem to be Charlie and MHS, at least for the moment but hopefully - similar to in Botswana - GBR having one successful athlete in MHS inspires and allows for a new generation of top runners who can possibly challenge barriers and break records in the future (as MHS said in the interview)!
Thanks for your honesty l0ser
@@TheFinalLegnot everyone is the same. So not everyone will have that jump. You're way of reasoning is reductive. For all you know, MHS is at his best ever, then what? You will have wasted your time with this tired video
@@jhadebredenkamp97 You could be right that MHS could have hit his lifetime best time last year in Paris, but … after improving by 0.8 seconds last season and consistently beating his previous PB over the season my money wouldn’t be against him lowering his PB a little more if he stays healthy.
Im not sure the record will be broken soon but their will be more sub 44 personal bests for sure?
I think if the WR for the 400m does get broken, it will be done of 42.96-42.99. I think Matthew is one of the big favourites to break the WR and his performances last year are an example that he could run even faster. I do hope that he can manage his body and avoid as many injuries as possible because it's been a problem for him recently. I truly believe he has the capabilities of breaking 43 seconds and also becoming World & Olympic Champion if he can maintain his fitness and hold on in the last 100m of the 400m.

@jhadebredenkamp97 How
@ are you d um b
How's Hudson-Smith suddenly a contender to break the WR at 30 years old after languishing in the 44-45 range his whole career?
@@XDF745 Because of his performances this past year and half and him dipping significantly down in the 43 second barrier. He's been very consistent with his times and I think he's got a shot personally. Unless you think he can't ever improve after his 2024 season.
It will be broken, but won’t be Matthew to do it.
You can do video an jamaica in the 400m, i hope watson and powell , can make the jump in times to match these guys
Would love to see Watson get healthy again and get back into the mix in the 400m. He'll have to get down to 43 mid to get on the podium again, but he has the potential for sure.
Quincy Hall is ready to break the 400m world record!!! He's got that Dog in him. Matthew Hudson-Smith does not.
Never thought about it like that, but MHS is probably right. To have THIS many running 43, with so much talent coming up, they likely will push past the WR into 42 territory. Though GBR definitely had a 400 tradition in the 1990s.
Exactly. IMO, there is a reason MJ was so fast, ofcourse he had the talent, but he also had to run away from Butch Reynolds, Quincy Watts and Steve Lewis. Lashawn Merritt had to run away from Jeremy Wariner and Kirani James. Wayde had to run away from Merritt and James.
Right now, all these guys have not choice but to push each other to fast times. Wayde was on the outside lane in Rio. Im sure all he was thinking for that first 100m was "these guys are probably coming for my ass I have no choice but to get out". And ends up running 43.03. Same thing with Jereem in Paris who ran 43.78 from lane 9.
Everyone pushes each other to faster times and we might see that here over the next few years,
@ that 4x4 WR ‘bout to fall too! Mark it down now 😂
It’s going to be someone you’re not expecting. Spikes are crazy now. Training and recovery is crazy
You know whats crazy, I can see Michael Norman breaking the world record and I think that falls in the bucket of someone were not expecting. Lets be honest, even despite his 43.45 and his gold in 2022, he unfortunately seems to be "out of the conversation" when it comes to the 400m now. He's made 2 consecutive Olympic 400m finals but got no medal. was injured in 2019 and 2023, and how now be surpassed by Quincy Hall who just switched to the event full time 2 years ago.
I love Michael and hes an amazing person, but I could see his 2026 going like Asafa's 2006. Legendary season, World record one or twice with 42.99, but then unfortunately struggles the next few seasons.
Matthew Hudson Smith got unlucky in Paris 2024 that 43.44 is the fastest non winning time in the mens 400m event. That time would won gold in past Olympics and World Championship apart from Wayde Van Niekerk 43.03 gold in 2016 Rio and Michael Johnson 43.18 1999 World Championship. Quincy Watts did well to edge him in 43.40.
I think she in injures
I personally think if Leslie tebogo take the 400m seriously he breaks that record this season his speed and relax running style he’ll run 42xx I think smith is near his max and he doesn’t have that raw speed to run 42!

Why you don't never talk about the 800 meters
It's a little off the subject. Great Britain finished third in the 4 x4 in the Olympics. They were short, one great leg on the third leg. Who do you think for team Great Britain can step up and give them shot at the US and Botswana.
Rio Mitcham
Samuel Reardon wheo ran in the 4x4 heats in Paris has a PB of 44.70 from the London DL and is young. You also have Jaden Smith, Rio Ritchman, Joseph Brier, Charlie Carvell, who are all 45.mid guys and around the 25 year old or younger range. So well see!
MHS will NEVER break the 400m WR. And i mean NEVER!!!
Question is who will break it
Matthew?..Tebogo?...Quincy Hall?....🤔 agreed when he say we can push the limit
As South Africans, we'll accept Tebogo; since we're Botswana's landlords. Defs wanna keep it in Southern Africa
Yea its a pretty open question on WHO will break it. I think Tebogo is the MOST LIKELY to break it, but until he is actually running the open 400m consistently, I couldnt put him in the actual conversation. I think Matt and Quincy Hall have the ability, but I may think someone like Samukonga is more likely cause he is young and still developing. Honestly. Not sure. And if it lasts for another 5 years, then will Quincy Wilson break it after most these guys are older.
And this is to say nothing about Michael Norman if he gets a one off healthy race...
With the inclusion of Steve Gardener and Tobogo I'm looking for wr. At world champions
Yea, it will be interesting to see if Steven Gardiner is able to make a healthy comeback soon. Its crazy to think that he has been getting injured every year since 2021. And now his PB has been passed by 2 guys, with more likely to come.
someone is gonna run 43.04 i just know it
Imagine🤣🤣
That happened in both the mens and women's steeplechase the past few years right?
If anyone is going run sub a sub 43 seconds 400m for the first time in the near future the most likely in my opinion is Letsile Tebogo.
Yea, in general, I agree. Tebogo is clearly the most talented 100-200-400 sprinter and he just hasn't taken the 400m serious through a whole season yet for us to really see what he can do. But I also wouldn't be surprised if someone else did it before him as well if he remains in the 100/200 and only does one-off 400s in the early season.
I think letsie Tebogo can break the 400 m world record
Agree, he has probably the most talent right now if were talking 400m, but well have to see him actually dip his toes into the event for a full year.
You keep saying 43 when you meant 44
My bad good call out. The article was talking about going sub 43 to break the world record, then I started to carry that over into when talking about guys going sub 44. But you know what I mean😅 Thanks for watching!💯
Nah he choked to win gold every world and Olympic
Tebogo should be the clear favorite to break the 43 seconds barrier first. He is the closest to Michael Johnson as shown by his 4x4 split.
Agree for sure. If he takes time to run the 400m for a full year, then he can do it. Like you said, the splits clearly indicate he has the talent.
The 400 meter WR Wayde Van niekerk and the 800 meter WR David rudisha, is the relatively weakest WR's in track when it comes to men. The more i think about it the more surprised i get about it. I also think that the 400 meter and maye the 800 meter is the improperly trained events as well in track. The reason is that stamina comes into picture more, and the VO max from 200 and onwards is important, and the 800 meter is wery close or could be practically a sprint event as well, but more a paced run of 600 meter in close to sprint pace with a full sprint for the last 200 meters. The 800 meter runners get altitude training to some extent but the 400 meter sprinters don't and because of that the WR isen't better than 43.03, when it could have been 41 second somthing i belive, so let's se in the future if a high volume sprint training at altitude will be the future with the bult on double trechold traing like Jabob Ingerbrigtsen do, just with shorter burst like muliple 300/400 sprints in each session with more strengt training buks than before.
