This shot isn't in the version of the intro you showed, but there's a shot with Goku, Trunks, and Pan that's a wide shot of them attacking an enemy while close-ups of them doing their attacks are put over the wide shot. I'd even go so far as to say GT's ending is miles better than Z's. GT actually gives the characters proper farewells for the most part, giving the audience a chance to reminisce before it's all over. I get that Toriyama was going for an open ending with Z, with room for fans to sort of imagine on their own what happened after it all, but he kind of tripped and fell in the execution. It just feels like a non-ending, where the story just kind of... stops instead of having an actual conclusion.

GT had lots of flaws but here are some things i liked:
    - Gogeta and the fact that it had Goku's personality having more influence
    - Goku's Super Sayan 4 design was pretty cool
    - The idea that the dragon balls being used and abused so much could have consequences and to create villains out of the dragon balls, specially Omega Shenron.
    - Going around the universe searching for the dragon balls(allthough it takes a bit of the tension from the earth being in danger away).
    - The ending, although kind of sad because he leaves, was awesome and very emotional. I always though that one day Goku would get granted a special place (maybe immortality) and become the dragon balls guardian (at least that is how i saw that ending). He always protected not only the earth but every innocent.
I felt so happy when i found out dragon ball super was coming out but so far for me it has been a bit dissapointing because of the power levels all over the place. It had so much potential, especially when Evil Goku was announced. Evil Goku should be the final villain. Kind of a what if Goku had turned bad and foccused all his power on destroying instead of being a force for good.

Dragon Ball GT suffered from the overly high expectations fans had for it. The DB property was white HOT and fans couldn't wait to see a continuation of the series. I think my biggest issue with it was the mundane Americanized music. I love Mark Menza's work on projects like The Return of Cooler and Super Android 13. But for whatever reason it wasn't hitting with me like the Faulconer score did with DBZ. There's a handful of tracks that get used over and over. And not that many big villains have their own unique theme song. In a way Menza's score opened my eyes and helped me appreciate the original Japanese music for DB properties. I also felt like the choreography for the fights in GT were very repetative. In almost every fight the characters spam out ki blasts with little hand to hand combat. I appreciate the show for what it is and tried to do. But its not my cup of tea.

I have always loved the notion that Yi Xing Long ( Omega Shenron ) , being the supposed superme symbol of negative energy , is frozen in fear by the amount of positive energy that Goku and his Universal Spirit Bomb holds .
Also the ambiguity regarding Goku's death , is also something I appreciate. My opinion is , no he wasn't dead but a change overcame him for sure. His body absorbs the energy of the Negative Karma Ball , makes it his own life force , keeping him just alive to end off the final villain. IMO , he dies immediately after , revived by Shenron ( the red eye glow ) , to leave with him as a part of his 'deal' .
I think this is where Super took inspiration from , in terms of Goku's body absorbing the massive attack that supposedly kills Goku but actually upgrades him.

    • @hyperrunner893
      @hyperrunner893 2 года назад +5

My interpretation is that when he swallowed the 4 star ball it allowed him to directly be in contact with Shenron which is why when he was holding the karma ball he was talking to ''someone'' asking them to grant one more wish just one last time and promises to get by without using the dragonballs again, he is clearly talking to Shenron who actually grants his wish which was to bring Goku back to life as that is the only way I can see him surviving that blast. Its either that shenron granted him immortality which is why Omega Shenron's blasts had no effect on base Goku, or he granted him a power boost equivalent to the shadow dragons collectively added to his own power since the dragon can only grant what is within their power limits, which means the reason Omega couldn't phase Goku was that base Goku actually got a power boost so high his base form surpassed Omega and became immortal on top of that because he merged with Shenron by swallowing the dragonball.
Or the universal spirit bomb gave Goku this power boost, it could be one or the other, but all I know is that Goku merged with Shenron and became immortal at the end of GT which is why 100 years later his great great grandson summons the dragon out of the 4 star ball and instead summons Goku who is the new dragon of the balls, Goku grants Goku jrs wish to save Pan, effectively GT ended where dragonball began with the 4 star ball, and Goku merging with his most treasured item and becoming its gaurdian once again in different way Goku effectively made a promise to Shenron and then kept that promise to take responsibility for the dragonball's becoming their gaurdien, its poetic its the perfect way to wrap up the whole series.

I actually really like what they did with Vegeta, not with the Bebi stuff mind you since honestly it just seemed so pointless to make Vegeta a bad guy through possession when there was a true story there about Saiyans being made to face the sins of their past but in terms of his development? They did a good job of growing him the hell up and I even think him relying on a machine shows that. At that point, it demonstrates he doesn't really care if this is not him earning an ability and just understands he needs to get to Goku's level to help deal with this threat and also as people mentioned... Vegeta is fine with taking shortcuts. I mean this is an aspect preserved in Super even, Vegeta didn't stop to complain that SSG wasn't a true Super Saiyan form since you get it by ritual and not through hardwork, he just was annoyed he wasn't achieving it. He let Babidi control him to tap into his potential just so he could fight Goku. This man wanted to wish for immortality even though he knew that meant fighting against anyone would be worthless since he was gonna win every time just by outlasting his opponents.

Really glad you brought up my single biggest issue with the show that many people for some reason skip over: the fight scenes in GT really do just blow for the most part. While many of them are technically well animated, they lack any sort of punch or intrigue. They're often slow beam-fests with little actual hand-to-hand choreography. We talk a lot about the emotions, the plot, and the characters in Dragon Ball. But like you said, at the end of the day, the story of Dragon Ball is mainly conveyed through fight scenes, and when those aren't on point, you have a major problem. For all my issues with Super, and there are plenty, that show at the very least often had some really exhilarating, well done battle sequences that this show just never has.

Super has rare occurances of good fight scenes, but most of them are awful. Even the fight scenes in Super Hero aren't that good. Super Broly is the major exception.
The first two arcs that retell the BoG and RoF movies are probably the most offensive and really shouldn't have been made in the first place. As well as many of the fights in the Goku Black arc. It didn't start to give decent fights until the ToP arc, but almost every major fight in Super hinges on some new transformation miraculously appearing during the fight. On top of that none of the fights feel like they have stakes.

@@link1565V2 And the only thing good about the Top arc are scenes involving UI, which is like 5% of it at best, the rest is a cringe fest, just the most idiotic, dumbed down insult of intelligence ever put on screen as far as dragonball goes, every character is stupid, every design is so awful and stupid, there is literally no logic or consistency whatsoever, nothing in super makes any sense, there is no powerscaling at all, its like a video game where everyone can fight anyone, the powerscaling is a mess, the worst powerscaling I've ever seen in anything for e.g one moment female Broly manhandles SSJB Goku with ease, he doesn't stand a chance against her, even his full power kamehamea was like nothing to her, (a cheap duplicate of the broly movie for cheap nostalgia marketing) next minute his SSJB is evenly matched against a much stronger form of her AND when she's fused with Caulifla and therefore hundreds of times stronger than when she just destroyed him in his strongest form, which means super made a character actually get weaker after doing fusion! Yeah, what in the actual fuck bro.
And that was some of the more intellectually tolerable scenes, most of it was even more cringe than that, the only way to enjoy super is by turning your brain off the entire time because it constantly insults your intelligence with poor writting that doesn't even try to make any sense or have any logical or stylistic consistency with the previous show or even its own show for that matter, every episode or even scene contradicts the previous episode or scene, its the most self contradicting show I've ever watched and that makes it the most irritating show in dragonball to watch, despite it actually having some exciting scenes at times, the logic surrounding it is a mess, the only thing super has over GT is that its overall more entertaining, but its writing is atrocious, at least GT had great ideas and felt like it was part of Z, even though GT was dull and rushed, at least it didn't constantly insult your intelligence and irritate you, GT at least had the potential to be a great show if it wasn't rushed and therefore would've had better execution and more story arcs, both shows are sort of opposites, GT is kinda boring and unexciting because it was rushed but had amazing ideas and potentially great writing if done right and still felt very connected to z and had a small amount of highly emotional moments like SSJ4 transformation when he reminisces his whole life and the earth his home that he is trying to protect actually is what transforms him and gives him the power to protect it, or like the ending that were some of the strongest in the franchise, Super is often quite entertaining but has the most atrocious writting and atrocious ideas that tarnish the franchise and feels like a high production fanfiction with no stylistic or logical connection to the original shows, in all, both are dissapointing in very different ways but if I had to pick which one had the most potential to being a great show and live up to DBZ its GT for certain.

I agree with this so much. Whenever I hear people say that vegeta transforms because of Bulma's device, I wonder if there is some mistranslation in the english version. The device only allows him to transform into a great ape, the same way he did in DBZ with an energy ball when he first came to earth, exept it transforms him without the tail. Vegeta's SSJ4 transformations is earned legitimately just like Goku, by being powerfull enough to go SSJ as a great ape and maintaining control. I dont understand why people don't get that.
Also imo this transformation has a lot more depth than most those that happen in DBZ, I think people saying that transformations felt more intense back then must be nostalgia goggles, because there are exactly 2 charecters that have intense pain to transform, those being Goku and Future Trunks and the latter was a tv special, not really the original show. You can say Gohan SSJ2 was intense emotion too, thats true, but his SSJ transformation was rushed af, and SSJ2 was forgoten like 3 episodes later pretty much.

I would've enjoyed Dragon Ball GT a lot more if they actually succeeded in turning Goku back into an adult by the end of the first arc. Him being trapped in a child's body, despite being married, having kids, and having grandkids is very off putting.
Aside from that, I like the characterization of the main cast, notably Vegeta being much more mellow now, and Piccolo's epic sacrifice

A couple thoughts on this analysis of GT I have:
I kind of agree on the fact that Goku going Super Saiyan 4 doesn’t really have a ton of weight when you consider it on its own. However, not only is the transformation born from his love for his family and friends on Earth (in regaining his rationality as a Golden Great Ape by remembering a tender moment he shared with Pan as a little kid), to the point of the Earth itself literally standing in for the full moon for the first phase of his transformation, it means a lot to his history throughout the original series. Characters are more than the arc happening in front of them; their history matters for milestones like this. We started off the series with Goku being unable to control his Great Ape power, then one of the major milestones became when he went Super Saiyan for the first time. Now, not only has he advanced to a point to where he can control his ape power which has more significance in the series lore, he marries it with his more iconic Super Saiyan form. The scene where he unveils the form for the first time is Goku at his most realized as a character; this is Goku’s final form. A Saiyan by blood who unlocked his true power with his Earthling heart.
Vegeta using the Blutz Wave machine to transform into Super Saiyan 4 isn’t out of character. His pride is strong, yes, but by the end of the Majin Buu arc, Vegeta’s development finished off with him basically giving up his selfish quest to grow better than Kakarot because he feels like he deserves it. He’s not the selfish Saiyan prince we saw him as throughout most of Z in GT especially; he’s more of an Earthling due to Goku’s influence. DB Super likes to perpetually portray Vegeta the way he was in the Cell Saga; as someone who only cares about growing stronger than Goku and his pride that’s the excuse for every stupid decision he makes in the story. Vegeta’s pride is strong, yes, but there are instances in even Z where his pride doesn’t stop him, such as when he allies with Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo on Namek, or when he basically lets go and begs Goku to kill Freeza. In GT, if Vegeta refused to use the Blutz Wave machine to grow stronger and just stubbornly insisted to fight as he was, like DBS Vegeta would’ve, that would’ve been dumb writing, because it would betray the development he went through in Z, which already did away with his far more charming intelligent and calculating side to his personality after Namek. Vegeta allowing himself to gain power through a way other than improvement-especially when he uses “I can’t let another home planet be destroyed” as justification, since he sees Earth as a home since Buu-is perfectly in character for this version of him. Why do you think he ONLY wears Earth clothes in GT and not the same armor set we’ve always seen him wearing in everything else?
Think Super Saiyan 4 is the only form in the franchise to feel unearned through work or struggle? Tell me, what did you feel when Super Saiyan 3 was unveiled? Or is that Z, so it gets a free pass?

To like appreciate GT it helps that I watched it right after watching dragonball z for the first time. Back then there was no DBS so the only progression of our beloved characters existed at the time in GT. It gave the series an end with some payoffs and dynamics between different characters which we never got from DBZ. Having Goku as a kid is always brings back that funny yet light hearted humor we always had since DB. And they gave Goku the most absolute Super Saiyan transformation.Of course it is technically non-canon, but that never matter to me in the first place.

Same here, I watched it back to back with DBZ and I thought it was fine. I think certain elements played extra well, like the fast pacing. After the absolute slog that was the Buu arc, the zippy no-filler (mostly) storylines really felt refreshing. I see it as kind of like Return Of The Jedi. No, it's not as good as what came before, but it's still a good-enough end to the 'trilogy.'

The design is so epic and cool and side note, ss4 Gogeta is the coolest character design I have ever seen in my life

Other than the black star dragonball arc, I never had any real problem with dragonball GT. The music, particularly the Japanese version was great, the battles were good, Super Saiyan 4 was awesome, the animation was good, the consequences for the overuse of the dragonballs was a great idea, and the ending of dragonball gt is the best ending of any in the dragonball franchise.
Also, Vegeta only needed the blutz wave machine to transform into a great ape, since Vegeta didn't have a tail. If Vegeta could get his tail back, he wouldn't even need the blutz wave machine, that was made by Bulma by the way. Vegeta can create an artificial moon on his own, and can control his great ape form. Combine that with his ability to transform into a super saiyan, and Vegeta has everything that he needs to reach Super Saiyan 4 on his own, except for his tail, which is essential. That's why he needed Bulma's help, and it shows Vegeta's character development to get help from his wife to catch up to Goku.

I agree that one of the bigger letdowns about GT is the quality of the action. It's okay for what it is, but it seems without Toriyama's manga panels to draw from, the team at Toei struggle to craft compelling fight scenes. Dragon Ball GT is my favorite of the Dragon Ball series. It is incredibly flawed, but the things I love about it really make it stand out for me. I love the character designs and overall vibe of the show. It is unapologetically vibrant and 90s. So many bright reds and yellows. The locations are all so interesting. DBZ had so many bland, boring ass wastelands. Every location in GT has its own vibe.
It has a lot of really great concepts with decent to poor execution. The Shadow Dragons saga is the best example of a brilliant concept that is absolutely wasted, whereas the Baby saga I think is the best example of the show doing the most it can with an idea.
I think the reason people don't like this show is because of how different it is, but that's exactly why I love it. It feels exactly like what it is; if the people who made the movies went off and made their own show. It has all the creativity and uniqueness that Wrath of the Dragon and Fusion Reborn had.
But by far its greatest downfall is its poor use of the Dragon Ball characters, and inability to really tell a story with them. As a continuation of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, it is genuinely awful, but taken as its own thing, it can be very enjoyable.
Like the movies, which for the most part didn't really care about continuity or developing the plot or characters, GT is just content to have fun and do its own thing. And I'm grateful for that. If the show just tried to be like DBZ it would be truly hollow and worthless, because it does not have the same spirit as DBZ. GT is not DBZ. It's GT. And I love it.
