This is a FABULOUS trick! I've been using Revit for over 13 years and didn't know about this, but have often wished I could do it. I have an affinity for modeling in place (I do my kitchens that way b/c it works really well for what I do and my thinking process), but I usually scold myself and force myself to take the time to create a family for things I do use often. But with this . . .this is a game changer!! I think I might have to set aside a day to harvest families from former projects!!!! EEEKK!!! Thank you!!

Great content! I might want to suggest creating a family of the profile of the cover, in that way we can use it no matter the path/height of the wall is.. More flexible to have it that way. Don't you think?

Its a great trick, but a suggestion, while we creating model in place component, we can group that at 1st time, if its gonna repeat in more places, then if edit one group, it will change others as well, Instead of saving as group we can use this for the time being also :)

first of all thanks for this great tip.
I used groups to kinda instantiate floor types or other repetitive elements BUT i didn't get the part why we save as>family>group and not family...
i was shocked when i saw u wanted to edit the component, u didn't have to go to edit group.
anyway GREAT tip and i'll be using it from now on and thanks a lot and happy new year!

You are awesome the best Revit tutorials I have ever used. And I can see that I’m not the only one that thinks like that. I have one request from you. I have one issue that is not addressed in any place. I’m using Revit LT, and I still didn’t find a way to by pass the idea of not having the option to do in place component and families. Do you have any tip for that issue. I know few other people that have the same issue.

I have a quick question for all. I need to create fare few 2D Families in Revit, but the problem i, I don't know where to start (ie. what family editor to use - generic??) or further more, where to group them. I did form fare few Detail Items, which are great for details, but in the case of a . . . . eg. vehicle outline or wheelchair circulation near the doors . . .under what category do I place them under?
    Thanks for all your help!

Hi there i am a beginner and have been following for some time now. Can you elaborate on the arcs you created using a simple "inplace component"? I know you can edit profile of walls but that does not make for a parametric component quite like the one you have. For a beginner do you suggest making your own parametric opening through modelling in place similar to the method you used for these sweeps? Thanks!

Instead of making it a family would it be smarter to save your model in place profile as a separate profile, so if the arches are a different size you can maintain the same trim work aka cover by creating new sweeps for different size arches? Just a thought.
