im still using the old material editor - i just find it easier for me - but great overview mate. The only thing i hate about it is that on heavier scenes, it lags a lot

I would suggest giving the slate editor another try as it will help alot. If you were experiencing lag in bigger scenes, then try deleting the materials which doesnt require tweaking anymore from the material editors viewport and any unused materials. Also having the multiple viewports help in taking some load off. The only lag you will experience is when max has to render 100+ textures which will take a couple of seconds. But once done its back to normal

I was the same for a long time, just couldnt get used to Slate. Now I can't imagine going back to Compact. Slate is SO much better.

Without knowing your budget, general advice will be to invest most in the processor. Look at the number of cores the processor has because more cores = less rendering time. Second thing will be to get a good motherboard which supports upto 128gigs of ram if you want to upgrade it in the future and also has SSD support. Next you need a fast SSD to run your applications off from. Get atleast 64gigs of ram if you can afford 128gig go for that as it will help in rendering of larger scenes. Graphics card doesnt matter that much as long as you are not using engines like Fstorm which are graphic based rendering. Vray Corona doesnt need that much graphic memory.
